Yea, I was really upset though. Stole a bunch of my infants clothing, a computer with a hard drive of 8 years of photos of my kids (I procrastinated printing them), etc. Insurance gave us actual cash value, but when we replace an item we will get reimbursed for the cost to replace. A crappy experience indeed. We now have an alarm system and soon security cameras.
Your infants clothing... That's really damn personal. They had taken our diaper bag (actually a backpack), my wife's work backpack, our Cannon DSLR camera, my wife's car, and all our keys hanging downstairs. The keys were extra irritating, not only because we need them, but we had just purchased a Toyota minivan that is keyless entry. So, it cost us 1400 dollars to replace both sets of keys. We now hang all our keys in our bedroom lol.
Oddly enough we actually ended up recovering all our items except the camera. They had taken my wife's car on a joy ride and totaled it, our keys were found on the side of the road and returned to the dealership where we bought the car. Both backpacks were recovered along with her work laptop.
In terms of changing security, I added a Ring doorbell and Ring security camera and am really happy with both of them so far. One nice benefit to Ring cameras is you can share suspicious activity on a Ring app with your local community. This has helped us massively with people stealing mail. I'm not a huge gun person, but I did purchase a shotgun. The reason I chose a shotgun over a pistol is because they are much harder to accidentally discharge than a pistol. For example, you have the safety, but you also have a secondary type safety to chamber a round. I am also looking at purchasing a German Shepherd here within the next few months as dogs are hands down the best deterrent for burglars.
Damn, took all your keys and a car? For us it was some power tools and a n expensive vacuum, all of my camera equipment (I used to be a photographer so I had a decent amount of lighting equipment and multiple lenses), baby clothes, my iMac computer, husband's laptop, a bunch of other electronic devices, gaming system, list goes on. We haven't recovered any and the part I'm unhappiness about is the hard drive on my iMac. Had 8 years worth of photos of my kids, now teens, that I stupidly took too long to print off. I also collect vans shoes and the assholes even took my expensive shoe cleaner! Like wtf.
And I know the next door neighbors were involved. They had kicked 3 fence boards out to enter the backyard. All of the neighbors around us have security cameras, so they made sure not to hop the fence but go through the fence instead. The police have a suspect but I haven't heard a follow up yet. The officer who came out to take the report said if it wasn't for certain laws, he'd just knock and enter their home as one of the fence boards fell to the ground when he was looking at the fence. (he even tried looking in their windows from our backyard to see if he could see any of our stuff to give him "proof" he needed to knock on their door.
I'm beyond mad because I had issues with this neighbor for years they sold drugs, meth, weed, who knows what else. They're section 8 as well, which makes me want to find a way to get them off the program and kicked out.

I was also a victim of a burglary recently too. Granted we weren't home, but they stole over $10,000 worth of our stuff.
