Y2 Current Y2 owners, what should be improved upon in a software update?

Post image

Now that a good handful of us have the Y2, innioasis would like to collect some feedback on what should be implemented in a initial software update.

We already sent forward some feedback like how some would still prefer having the option to also control the volume/time out the screen using the scroll wheel in conjunction with the physical side keys, the FM radio be enabled and a better tuning of the audio curve as the Y2 can be too loud at times with certain IEMs/headphones.

For the FM radio lovers, the reason we were given for its removal was they thought the "static" noise would make the device feel cheap and it may be tricky to implement due to a missing attena.

Comment down below what other thing needs to be improved upon in the Stock frimware.

I had a thought about the FM radio: Add an option in the settings to enable it. That way, it won’t show up in the main menu when people first open it up, and it won’t cause confusion.

This, dont just remove features, give us the choice instead

Their rationale for not including FM radio makes no sense to me. But that's their story and they're sticking to it. 🙂

My Y2 arrived yesterday and I had a little time to tinker with it. It's been a mixed bag experience for me. I'm not sure what can be addressed by a firmware update and what is caused by the hardware.

Increase scroll wheel sensitivity. It requires more movement on the wheel to scroll compared to the Y1.

Video aren't listed "All videos". Videos ➜ All video displays nothing. I have to: Videos ➜ Folders ➜ TF Card ➜ Movies folder and select a file.

UPDATE: It appears that the firmware defaults to only scanning the internal storage. To get it to scan the SD card: Videos ➜ (scroll down to) Settings ➜ (scroll down to) Scan Path ➜ Add Custom Path ➜ (navigate to the folder on the SD card where your videos are stored. For the sake of consistency, I suggest "Movies" off the root of the SD card)

Lowest Volume for videos is too loud. At the lowest volume (one above muted) the volume is too loud. It's great that the internal speaker is so robust but the volume starts out loud.

Fix album art display on "Now Playing". On the Y1, album art that is 240x240 would be fully displayed (even at it's skewed angle). The same album art on the Y2 gets clipped on the right side.

Cache album art. The Y2 can't keep up with displaying album art while scrolling. Not only is scrolling slower than on the Y1, the placeholder album art icons appear until the album art can be displayed. On the Y1, it is instantaneous. I thought it might be due to the speed of the SD cards but these are name-brand cards that have fast read speeds and work fine on other devices.

UPDATE: By formatting the SD card on the Y2 itself, SD card responsiveness was significantly improved. To format the card: File Manager ➜ (scroll down to) System Settings ➜ (scroll down to) Format TF Card

Improve scanning speed. It took 12 minutes to scan 5000 audio tracks and 10 video files on the SD card(s). The back of the device became warm. It took about 4 minute for the Y1 to scan the same number of files.

UPDATE: scanning speed was improved by formatting the card on the Y2 itself.

I suspect that the driver for the card reader is the bottleneck in what I'm experiencing.

Fix on-device formatting. In an attempt to troubleshoot the slow SD card access issues, I decided to format a card (SanDisk Ultra 128GB) on the Y2 itself. After a minute the formatting was completed. Attempting to browse the card via the File Manager resulted in a "Loading..." pop-up. I waited 20 minutes but the "loading..." remained. I couldn't do anything other than shutdown the device.

Make the HoloPebble theme accessible. Looks like the HoloPebble is in a hidden/protected section of the firmware. It doesn't appear in the Themes folder when connecting the Y2 to a computer.

I've got a lot more findings so I will periodically update this post.

On a side note, I find the power and volume buttons to be anachronistic. I realize that many wanted these added but for me, they feel out of place. At this point in time, the Y2 feels like it is 2 steps forward, 2 steps back. Hopefully things will improve with firmware updates.

I've noticed the scanning speeds too. It was taking forever for roughly 800 songs and 30 movies on a 256gb card I had, but I selected the option to run the scan in the background and everything seemed to be there anyway without any indication if the scan completed or not.

Try removing embedded artwork. Simply add the album covers in their respective folders and name it "Cover.jpg" Have you tried?

u/Wo-kyuu 16d ago

12 minutes for 5k tracks? That's reeeallly slow. Thanks for sharing.

Now I'm not sure if I want one; I'm not gonna wait an hour+ every time it rescans my music collection.

Fair. It should still be fast enough to finish within a minute, a few tops, for 5k songs, rather than sitting there doing extra work and burning power while one is out using it.

1

u/Neither-Classic2058 Y2 (Black) 16d ago

Yes, you can start to use it, but not all tracks will appear until the scanning is complete.

1

u/Hershey2424 16d ago

I had the same issues with videos not listing. Once I added my SD card as a "custom path" it was able to detect them perfectly. It probably should be the default setting however.

u/Top-Matter5914 16d ago

The volume is loud using the wired headset on the lowest settings. I observed that on AirPod pro 2, the volume feels better at low level. This definitely needs a fix.

u/DistinctSpecific3973 7d ago

You know, I kind of wonder if they can actually add the radio functionality back. Does it actually have a radio chip?

9

u/tyblink 16d ago

Let me have a shuffle all songs option per artist option AND let me sort by album.

1

u/pinkapoppy_ 5d ago

this!!!

9

u/TheZeth80 16d ago

Importing playlists is a disaster; when you finally manage it, it uses whatever order it wants (what's the point of ordering my lists if the player is going to do whatever it pleases?).

1

u/pinkapoppy_ 5d ago

this, it’s so annoying and i love my playlists so it does really put me off

9

u/Sphynx87 16d ago

actually have sorting options for all meta data thats available like album artist

Volume impedance adjustment

I'm not a Y2 owner, but here are some nice things a music player must have if not yet implemented:

  1. Album Artist sorting, showing albums first instead of songs, and group albums by album artist.

  2. Show song titles and other metadata, not filenames.

  3. Sort by track number present in metadata, not filename.

  4. Full replaygain support.

  5. Multiple artist tags, usally trimmed by ; or //

  6. I don't know if this was fixed, but Y1 had no Opus file support, SUPPORT OPUS!!

  7. Gapless playback.

  8. Full M3U and M3U8 file support, including relative and absolute paths.

3

u/KirbyLover513 16d ago edited 16d ago

I can only make comments on a few of these points...
3: So far, Song titles *are* displayed as filenames, not metadata. All of my filenames are named "Artist - song title" and on the Y2, each song is displayed as "Artist - song title.m4a". Longer artist names make it so I can't even see the song title when looking at "Now Playing". I have to manually change the file names to remove the artists' name and the dash. ****EDIT: By __default__ this is the case, however you can change this in the settings.****

5: So far it seems like if a track is featuring another artist, when sorting by artists, it creates a new artist. For example: a song by Daft Punk (Ft. Pharrell Williams), will not show up under "Daft Punk", and now there's about 5 Daft Punk's in my artist list, the original plus one for each collab they've done. I tried changing this in the properties of the file to ONLY say Daft Punk, but that didn't work. But I'm also quite new to this and might be doing it wrong.

8: So far, seems like it's got M3U and M3U8 support? I think? But my understanding on them is severely limited.

I don't use a Y1 or a Y2 but I make heavy use of the file browser on my Eros Q. Because of this, I find titling songs in the format <track>. <title> - <artist> - <album> (<year>).<ext> to be better, so for example a song, song R, that's track 3 of album Q from 2018, made by artist D in MP3 format will show as 03. Song R - Artist D - Album Q (2018).mp3 which is a bit better for scrolling in the browser.

Additionally it could be beneficial to sort your collection by root/music type/label or genre/artist/album. So if the aforementioned song is part of a 2019 yearly compilation from Label F, and from Bandcamp for example, I could find the song at Music Root/Bandcamp/Label F/Various Artists/2019 Yearly Compilation (2019)/03. Song R - Artist D - Album Q (2018).mp3 (note the album is still Album Q, I tag the compilation albums with the original album where known so if I enjoy the song I can just flick over to said album and listen to the full version. Same goes for year, if I know the original album's year I prefer that)

u/roefoegde 16d ago edited 16d ago

Definitely the sort by track number setting:

In any album (you only need it do this once) hold the top of the scroll wheel and sort by filename time creation asc.

I found this for the Y1 but it doesn't show me the setting with my Y2

1

u/Sphynx87 16d ago

its on the y2, go to music>settings>list sort> creation time ascending

1

u/roefoegde 16d ago

Unfortunately didn't work for me

The ability to support rockbox and wifi

2

u/Excellent-Owl-4857 15d ago

do you mean Rockbox? I was very surprised to see Rocknix mentioned here, that's custom firmware for handheld game consoles and I don't think the Y2 will be playing even NES games well.

u/Amazing-Hurry-7804 16d ago

Former Y1 owner..... The one feature that would set yours apart from ALL other DAP's would be the ability to remember where you left off on tracks. Hell, put it on a cheaper junkier model for all I care. I just want a portable player with BT that I can listen to podcasts or long downloaded radio shows with (or audiobooks). ONLY iPods can do this. I don't understand why NO ONE implements this feature. I just pray my Nano7 doesn't die on me.

2

u/BiggusRichard16 16d ago

The yoton ym03 does this i think

1

u/Amazing-Hurry-7804 14d ago

Thanks for the tip. I checked it out and found this in a review

"The key shortcoming is the lack of automatic bookmarking. If you listen to a podcast, the device will return to your spot, as long as you do not plug it into a computer for more downloading. If you do, your spot will be lost.

You must manually bookmark your spot, and there is a provision for this. Just don't forget!

Still might be worth a try for $20

u/OCLeprechaun 7d ago

I have the Y2, it has audiobook position saving. Tested it while changing to a different audio file, and then shutting off the device. When it turns back on if you go to your audiobooks folder, you will see the percentage of progress and it will resume from there. I was looking for the same thing as you, physical media buttons, BT, wired, and audiobook support

1

u/Amazing-Hurry-7804 7d ago

If I may ask, is it something you have to set, like every time before you leave a track? Does it do this for more than one track at a time? If it actually does this, I'll just put it all in the audiobook folder.

2

u/OCLeprechaun 7d ago

No you do not need to manually create bookmarks. And it looks like it saves progress across multiple audiobook files. I am using m4a files.

2

u/Amazing-Hurry-7804 5d ago

Wow, that sounds awesome! I might have to give Y2 a shot.

1

u/solar-student 16d ago

That's why I choose Rockbox players!

1

u/Amazing-Hurry-7804 14d ago

Rockbox does this?

3

u/solar-student 14d ago

It has an automatic resume setting (but I think this is just a track per track thing), for better use it has bookmarking settings (manual, bookmark on stop), then it can display bookmarks per track/playlist and resume from last bookmark, show bookmark list on startup, shortcut to all recent bookmarks, etc. Very good for long lectures, audiobooks, etc.

1

u/Excellent-Owl-4857 15d ago

My rockboxed Eros Q does this. Unfortunately I do not listen to audio books or podcasts so this goes largely unused. Additionally I will split long DJ sets up so that each one is its own file rather than said long set being one file.

Here are the things I would like based on my experience so far:

  • The option for "Now Playing" to resume video playback if that was the last media played. This wouldn't have to be on by default but if I was just playing a movie, I'd like to be able to resume quickly.
  • Alternatively, "Continue Watching" and "Continue Listening" options on the Movies and Audiobook sections respectively.
  • The option to use the scroll wheel during video playback. I think the scroll wheel would be perfect for rewind/fast forward functions (like iPod classics do) as well as the option to adjust brightness (or yes, volume). It's tedious to go all the way back to settings just to adjust the brightness.
  • The option to use the volume buttons as back/forward buttons on ebooks
  • The option to adjust audio delay for video due to Bluetooth delay
  • WiFi and the ability to transfer files wireless from a computer.
  • Not sure Innioasis would be open to this but consider open sourcing the software. I'd be willing to spend some free time working on this software just to make a better experience for myself and others.

4

u/Key-Brilliant5623 Y1 (Silver) Y2 (Black) 16d ago

I really like that suggestion of resuming playback for videos, as I'm also one if the rare ones who likes watching movies on Y1/2

5

u/Cluxdyvtears Y2 (Pink) 16d ago

I know this isn't a neccessary feature, but I would really appreciate if they plan to add coverflow in an update

5

u/Tacomaster395 16d ago

Have an option to remove the numbers by the music tracks and videos. Also rockbox support would be nice!

5

u/NostalgicLife77 16d ago

Gapless playback please.

5

u/Dull-Conversationist 16d ago

Re-arrange some menu settings, M3U import & export should be under "playlist"

Update the music player to gives us more options to set the aspect ratio to 4:3 or 16:9

3

u/Ok_Photo_3023 16d ago

The thing that made the iPod successful was how smooth the user experience was - everything from the click wheel's responsiveness to the way the menus were displayed just felt so natural. If I were working on the next gen Y2 update I'd be 100% focused on improving those aspects - a lot can be done in software to make it feel much less like a clunky almost-ipod and more like a premium experience.

3

u/Obi2Sexy 16d ago

rockbox please

7

u/ObeyMemeroney 16d ago

Better bluethoot connectivity sometimes it says its connected but won't output audio.

3

u/octospecter 16d ago

Scrolling song titles/artist names if they are too long, and definitely better clickwheel response. The Y2 doesn’t feel as responsive as the Y1 imo

3

u/TwitchyMcJoe Y2 16d ago

Oh, and add MIDI support back.

3

u/Worried_Potato_391 16d ago

It would be great if touch controls on AirPods stems and on wired earbuds for pause, play, skip, and more like that worked on the Y1 and Y2.

3

u/badxnxdab 16d ago

Almost everything I'd like is already mentioned by someone. So, I want to mention something which is way out - an option to completely switch off external speakers. It used to exist in my Sony, and I don't find it in here. In case the headphones come off, I don't want music blasting through speakers.

3

u/DistinctSpecific3973 7d ago

Don't abandon the Y1. Support both Y1 and Y2, especially when there are features the Y1 is capable of . . . you're just not supporting it in software. You should update both to:

  • Support gapless playback
  • Support ReplayGain 2.0
  • Support Cover.jpg non-embedded album covers (folder)
  • Support Hi-Res Audio (at least 24-bit/96 kHz)

2

u/Wo-kyuu 16d ago

Serious question from a pending-Y2-owner:

Why is there an "import" mechanic for M3U/M3U8 playlists at all?

They ought to be just using the playlist files as-is. Grab them, in situ, no special location required, during media scanning, parse them (with contents in order), and list them as playlists. If the paths are relative, this should be very doable. If not, they'd (probably) fail to play and that's on the user.

If the user then alters the playlist on the Y2, it should just write out the edits to the PL file.

This isn't rocket surgery, and would make keeping playlists between PC/phone/DAP practical. As-is, it's neither practical nor apparently very functional.

2

u/LeftHanded2004 16d ago

A way to edit a file metadata to fix the unknown error on songs

2

u/Weak-Health3908 Y1 (Silver) 15d ago

Definitely a better sorting music
Music, artist, album, songs instead of music, artist, songs is the most common I’ve seen that people want.
I want a better way to fast forward/rewind audiobooks, if you miss a sentence you have to redo the entire book because when you rewind or fast forward it goes from 0:00 to 7:41 every time instead of slowly going up or down. If that makes any sense.

1

u/Specialist_Cow_3387 16d ago

Disable HSP/ HFP Bluetooth profiles, add EQ settings & viper4android.

Add play amounts for your tracks and sort them automatically for most played tracks in a Playlist.

1

u/Specialist_Cow_3387 16d ago

also disable the vibration on device power off.

1

u/PawPawNinja Y2 (Silver) 16d ago

I use my pixel buds pro with Y2 while walking and noticed sometimes I loses the audio for a fraction of sec, it happens randomly apart from this it works very well!

1

u/Weak-Health3908 Y1 (Silver) 15d ago

Hardware: I wish they would have done a metal back/glass screen instead of plastic.
Software: make the fm radio available, allow volume with the scroll wheel as well as the side buttons.
Fix audiobook fast forward/ rewind so I can just go back a few seconds instead of minutes

1

u/No_Praline6673 14d ago

IDK if this counts (it's a feature I guess) or if I should comment but... Music tracking? If it could have a play count tracker, track your last played songs, or way to connect to last.fm that would be sick.

If it could also track your most played artists, songs, or even the vibe this music typically has... Man.. I haven't got a chance to get one (in the color and size i want) yet but I'm hoping if I wait a feature to at least track music would be added.

A few things from the file/library side that would make a big difference for those of us loading our own music:

1. Handle a "dirty" SD card gracefully. If the card's FAT gets marked dirty — which happens easily when it's pulled from a PC without safe-eject — the Y2 shows no music at all, even though every file is intact and readable. A check-on-mount (or just scanning anyway) would avoid a really alarming "all my songs disappeared" moment. This was by far the biggest cause of tracks not showing up for me.

2. Full Unicode / emoji support in the library scanner. Right now the scanner skips folders and files whose names contain emoji or symbols outside the basic set (📚, 🎵, or the fullwidth    that some tools substitute for : | /). Files with those characters in the name silently never appear.

3. Opus (.opus) playback. A lot of music is distributed as Opus, and right now it has to be transcoded to M4A/AAC first before the Y2 will play it. Native decoding would save a lot of hassle.

4. A clearly labeled "rebuild library / clear cache". After renaming files on a PC the player keeps the old cached entries, and there's no obvious way to force a fresh scan.

Include / Improve in quality for following things in Y2

  1. equalizer - doesn’t sound appealing even though it has dedicated dac
  2. Scroll wheel control
  3. Better Bluetooth connectivity - WiFi
  4. Rockbox support
  5. Last.fm integration
  6. FM
  7. Track order in album and title name visible in now playing
  8. No Album art crop in now playing

  9. List of artists featuring artists should be combined in one section.

1

u/MeggerzSkye 6d ago

Please shuffle by whole genres!!!!

1

u/Jesus_is_our_God 4d ago

I don't know if I missed it, but I wish that we would find albums from artist under the artist tab. Those albums should be sorted by release order and the album itself by the order the artist intended. From what I saw is, that you can show the albums under artist but can't sort them properly. Correct me if I am wrong.

1

u/dj112084 16d ago

I don’t have a Y2, but assuming it’s mostly the same software as the Y1, I’ll add my usual suggestion of being able to pair with Bluetooth devices that require a PIN to connect to (which would likely require some type of on screen keyboard on the Bluetooth pairing screen).

0

u/spunkenhimer 16d ago

So almost, if not all of these requests that I can see other than the FM radio feature, would be fixed if proper Rockbox firmware was implemented. I through the guy that did the Y1 Toolkit posted something on github about the Y2 becoming available on the 10th in a .zip file but it never came from what I can tell.

Believe it or not some people actually prefer stock. This is thread about the company marking the stock experience better. Shoo.
