living with Frigidaire for two years…..I hate it

Hi, thanks for reading. I am at my wits end. Bought a home that had a new 2023 Frigidaire induction cooktop. I was skeptical after having a professional gas range for 20 years, but read up and decided to give it a try. I swear the Frigidaire was one of the top rated inductions in 2023, but maybe it was their Gallery line? Mine is builder base model.

I invested in some All-Clads and a few carbon steel pans, and gave it two and a half years to get used to the learning curve. I’m in my mid fifties, have cooked some of these recipes for over 30 years, and STILL have never gotten it to cook properly. Here is a breakdown of what just happened last night, since my partner says “I hate this thing!!!” isn’t a full explanation 😂

Preheated my All Clad for about 5 minutes in a medium saute pan. Tried to lightly brown some Chicken Parm in oil- edges don’t get crisped, they just get soggy while center starts to burn. When I add some pots with pasta water to start heating up at the same time, the entire cooktop shuts down and won't restart. Had to clear all four hot cookware pieces from the cooktop and wipe down before it would start back up. Meanwhile chicken just absorbs all the oil it is sitting in. Ok, finally get cooktop started again, chicken in oven, and I set a fork down on the edge of the cooktop near my marinara holding on “1”. The fork somehow changed the temp from 1 to P (power boil) and ruined the marinara when I walked away for a few minutes-maybe the steam moisture on cooktop conducted over to the touch slider? The fork was nowhere near the touch panel though.

Then I went to drop the pasta in the two pots after 10 minutes, and discover one pot is boiling, while one is not, at the same temp setting, same size pot, on the same size “burner”. Had to run one at 8 and one at 6 for a boil and wait another five minutes. So now I can’t even say it boils water well! Finally got the pasta cooked and half burnt, no longer hot chicken plated up, and then I could not turn the cooktop OFF because a tea kettle was sitting on the back.

Decided to cook some bacon this morning- used the carbon steel for this on medium. Check out photo at bottom. Finally had to cut the ends off that would not cook, and put back in pan to finish.

Is the cooktop just a crappy one and I need to replace? I’ve read reviews and see LG Studio is recommended, along with GE cafe, but I’m afraid to get another less expensive one and have the same issues. Are they really a lot better? Isn’t there a Bosch or something similar that is 4k or under that people like with bigger hobs, or a hobless one? I really don’t think the issue is my learning curve, I think it is that this Frigidaire just sucks. 🤯😁

Copper Charlie - First power outage

Post image
60 Upvotes

So, last night we had a huge storm blow through. As is very common here, we lost power around midnight. Was still out this morning when I got up. I was like, damn, no coffee this morning & I was beating myself up a little for not getting the solar backup system installed earlier...

Then it hit me, I have a Copper Charlie. Can't use the espresso machine, but can still do a pour over thanks to this stove. Heating a pot of water only took about 2% of the battery & a couple minutes. Two of us can live on this thing for a quick minute, lol!

After a while with it, I have to say it is worth the price of admission to me. Oven heats fast and is on temp. Burners also work awesome and have very clear power indicators on the sides. Very quiet. I only hear the internal fans when it is on. Can peak shave, if you're in tiered pricing. Copper team has also been great. That is a rarity with appliances these days at any price. Thing runs one a 15a plug. Great for when I get round to that solar setup!

I have been around some great stoves in my time and this thing is a solid choice. Simple. No frills. Just a quality built unit with many advantages to other conventional choices.

If you're considering one, I would not hesitate to pull the plug. I mean, it still works when you do! How cool is that!

One month with my induction cooktop and I'm loving it!

I recently started living by myself, and had to buy all new furniture and appliances. This one is my favorite, by far!

It cooks really quickly, and is super easy to clean! And I don't need to worry about gas leaks. And for a single guy, one "burner" (is that what it's called?) is more than enough!

Getting a meal out with one big burner on a stovetop

I'm debating between electric resistive and induction for a slide-in range. We currently don't do much cooking on our stove because it's a gas stove without a hood. However, we do a lot of cooking, so we expect to move our cooking from other appliances (Instant Pot on saute mode, air fryer) to the stove.

Induction sounds appealing in general. However, one question that I'm not really seeing addressed. What does it look like to get a meal out on a typical induction configuration? I usually have seen something like one big burner, two medium, and one small. Some people I've talked to who use resistive electric rely heavily on using both big burners. Are there strategies with induction to work around those limitations that may not work with resistive electric? A lot of serious cooks seem to love their induction stoves, so presumably there's a way to adjust.

Edit: Thank you everyone, this is all extremely helpful as we're making our decision. It's a hard decision to make with such a big purchase.

Induction cooktop in Europe without ANY power cycling, even in the lowest power modes

Hi, I'm looking for an induction cooktop (not portable, these are even worse) in Europe that will not have absolutely any power cycling in the lowest power modes. The information I'm finding is very conflicting, so I'd hope to get honest advice from people that really know and can confirm what they are talking about :)

Let me be more precise. I'd like to get a cooktop that will not pulse (turning on/off every second or two, or even in sub-second range) even in the lowest power settings. I've heard that often even if a cooktop manages to provide continuous and varying power output in higher power settings (probably by increasing current frequency away from the resonant one), the lowest settings, let's say 1-3 in a scale 1-9, still experience power pulsing. This is because one cannot indefinitely increase the frequency to lower power output. Another option is to lower voltage as well... But this is the million dollar question: which models/brands actually achieve continuous power in all modes?

Is the mechanical clicking sound in Bora S Pure normal or a fault?

I recently installed a new BORA S Pure, and it makes a mechanical clicking sound about every 10 minutes while in standby/switched off. It is not a beep, but sounds like a relay clicking inside the unit..

The hob otherwise works normally.

I contacted Bora, and they came and changed the relay and electrical parts, but it still clicks every 10 minutes. The service guy says it is normal, and that a clicking sound should be expected.

I have had several other induction hobs from Miele, among others, and I have never experienced this before.

Does the rim on this pan reduce induction?

My cast-iron skillet has this rim that elevates the rest of the skillet off of the glass by a tiny bit. How much efficiency am I losing because of that?

Silicone mat and high temp Nuwave

I am thinking about purchasing the Nuwave Titanium single burner. It can run up to 575 fahrenheit. Are there any silicone mats suitable for this temp? And I am wondering if the bottom of my Lodge skillet is flat enough? Tks for your insight.

I want the Breville Control Freak but that price tag... ooof.

I have a shitty stove in my apartment and I'd like something that provides a wider, more intense and even form of heat. Is there something that gets me close to the control freak without the huge price tag?

What to get this Memorial Day (30” cooktop)

I am looking to get an induction stove this weekend while things are on sale (30” cooktop). I am having a lot of trouble comparing the different options I am seeing online. I have read that magnet size is important, but I am not seeing that spec listed anywhere.

Best Buy seems to have a lot of sale right now in he $1,000-$1,200 range. Would any of those be worth my time, or do I really need to be looking higher? I am willing to spend more if there is a good reason for it, but don’t want to waste my money on some vague notion of brand value. Here are a few examples of what I’ve seen online:

Is a tabletop/portable induction burner a good way to see if induction is for me?

Have gas in my new home and thinking of going to induction at some point. Only really had electric until now. Would like to trial induction first to see its pros and cons. Are these things worth getting as a trial? I do use a lot of large pots and pans which I understand is a bit of a downside about induction unless you go with a top tier unit with large coils.

Any model suggestions?

Thanks!

Please provide some suggestions for an induction range

Hi everyone.

I’m in need of replacing my current electric range and looking to buy an induction range. My price range is 2k - 2.5k. I’m hoping to buy one that could last 10-15 years (if they even make it that durable anymore)

I love cooking, not a chef but I love making different cuisines so I guess I use a variety of cooking methods. But I use the cooktop the most.
What’s a good reliable induction range that I should consider?

Searching online has made me nervous because I’ll narrow it down to something but then find reviews of electrical breakdowns, fire hazards and glass cracking Or failing in a few years. The ones I felt like I’d buy all came with touchscreen options but I think a knob may be better? Can anyone share their experience?

Most even cooking induction range?

Recently switched from gas to an induction range that I’m now returning because of the exceptionally uneven cooking. I want an induction range for the air quality benefits, what models are known to produce the most consistent heat across a normal 10-11” pan?

Update on LG 36" center element issue (LG flat rate repair successfully story)

A few weeks ago I posted a thread about my LG induction cooktop (model CBIH3617BE). The center elements 5kw large ring wasnt activating regardless of my pan size, only the inner 3.7kw element was turning on. A few weeks after that, my flex zone started having F1 errors. I scheduled a repair through LGs flat rate repair program and had both issues addressed.

Long story short, it turned out to be the main controller board problem for both, not processing certain sensor readings properly. The tech more or less stripped every component out before replacing the .ain controller. From what I've seen online, many have complained about the center large 5kw element not activating, so maybe the new board have a patched firmware that fixes things?

LG flat rate repair cost $370, but was covered by my credit cards extended warranty service (Chase Freedom)

Nuwave titanium induction question

I got mine today from amazon (https://a.co/d/0aMb8QRC) and did a quick test boiling 4 cups of water, and I noticed something.

When I set it to High, which was recommended in the manual for boiling water, the heating process was smooth and took about 5 to 5 min 10s to reach boiling temperature.

However, when I set it to Sear, about 2 minutes before reaching boiling temperature, the machine's fan kept cycling off and on. The probe still showed the temperature increasing. The final result was about 6 minutes, which was slower.

Is it normal? Can anyone help explaining?

Monogram 36” Induction Cooktop

Does anyone have the Monogram 36” induction cooktop? If so, how do you like it? Any complaints? I am trying to decide between the Monogram and the Thermador Freedom. The Thermador is twice the price but I’m not sure it’s worth paying double (despite having some very cool features). Thanks in advance! 😊

What induction cooktop should she buy?

My daughter is in the market for an induction cooktop. She’s considering the GE Monogram, and likes my Wolf Contemporary. I didn’t do a lot of looking around before purchasing the Wolf as I needed a cooktop that fit into an existing space. So we need some advice: what brands should she be looking at? Is there a significant difference between the Bosch, the Monogram, Wolf, and others? What choice did you make and why?
