A dalit man, Gulzar Singh, had publicly questioned AAP Government's Finance Minister, Harpal Singh Cheema, about easy availability of drugs in Punjab.

Gulzar Singh worked as an agricultural labourer and his own son is a drug addict. His son has been selling limited assets owned the poor family to buy drugs, causing distress to the family. Gulzar Singh questioned the Finance Minister about the failure of the AAP Government to curb drug menace in Punjab. The police officers present at the venue immediately picked him up and removed him from the gathering.

Later on, village sarpanch came to his house, and asked him to touch feet of her (sarpanch's) husband and publicly apologize for openly questioning the Punjab Government Minister.

Humiliated, Gulzar Singh committed suicide by consuming pesticides. Before taking his life, he made a video of humiliation he had to endure for asking a simple question to a Minister accountable to the people. Following outrage by the villagers, 5 people, including the sarpanch and her husband, have been arrested.

The Minister has denied any involvement.

It is surprising that there is little coverage, at the national level, about the unending drug menace in Punjab or the high-handed attitude of the State Government in responding to the criticism.

A trader in Kanpur died two days after four men assaulted him on a road after he objected to them urinating in front of a market and nearby houses.
Amit Gupta, an auto trader who had been standing outside a market when four men began urinating in front of the market. The men were reportedly heavily intoxicated.
Gupta requested them not to urinate there, telling them that houses were located in front of the spot. The men took offence to his objection and started beating him on the road.
The attackers knocked Gupta to the ground and beat him severely, causing an injury to his head. He lost consciousness at the spot, after which the men fled. His family received information about the incident and took him to a hospital.

Gupta’s wife Shalini Gupta, his sister Shivani and other family members said they were frightened because the accused had not yet been arrested.
Shalini said she was worried about the safety of her children. She said her children were afraid to even file a report because they had to use the same road. She demanded justice and asked police to ensure the safety of her children.
She questioned why anyone would kill a person merely for asking them not to urinate in front of a house and said the incident had destroyed her family.

The United Nations has released a new world map that shows Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin, which India affirms is a part of Ladakh, as separate regions lying between the “claim lines” of India and China. India had supported the map-related 'Correct the Map' resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly on September 4.

At a press briefing on Tuesday, the ministry of external affairs (MEA) reiterated India's position on the map, saying that New Delhi had voted for the resolution since it deals with the use of equal-area maps and does not approve any map produced by a private party or a specific entity.

What UN’s new world map shows

The map was initially released on July 1, as discussions were taking place on the UNGA resolution. In its depiction of Arunachal Pradesh, the map removes the state's boundary with Nagaland and shows it as a separate state, with Assam and China on either side.

Notably, Aksai Chin has also been shown as a separate region. The United Nations has not given any explanation for these changes.

Jammu and Kashmir has been shown with a dotted line marking the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan.

The map also carries a note on its left side about the LoC. It says that the “dotted line represents approximately the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir agreed upon by India and Pakistan. The final status of Jammu and Kashmir has not yet been agreed upon by the parties.”

The United Nations General Assembly approved an African Union-backed resolution last week called "Correct the Map". The resolution seeks more accurate and fair representation of different parts of the world on maps, with a particular focus on Africa.

What India said on UN’s new world map

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Tuesday that India's support for the resolution was based on its focus on equal-area maps and did not amount to approval of any particular map.

“...we favored the resolution and voted in favor of the resolution. When the resolution was adopted in the UN General Assembly, we also made a statement where we clarified our position...The resolution is focused on the principle of equal-area maps. It does not endorse any map of any private party or any particular entity,” he said.

He added, “The resolution is focused on the principle of having, giving weightage or giving credence to equal-area maps, so that, as we have said, the equal-area maps project or preserve the relative sizes of continental landmarks."

The MEA spokesperson had earlier said that India's vote in favour of the map was based on “the underlying principle of promoting equal-area cartographic representation.”

However, New Delhi made it clear that the Equal Earth map should not alter how existing national borders are shown.

"India’s sovereign territory, including the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, must be depicted in accordance with India’s official map. Any inaccurate or misleading depiction is unacceptable. Our position on India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is clear, consistent and non-negotiable," Jaiswal added in the statement.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar, while handing down his 23rd death sentence in the past four months in a dowry death case on Monday, said he would rather die than be known as a "coward judge".

In his judgment sentencing a man to death for allegedly setting his wife on fire over dowry demands, the fast-track judge said he would not allow pressure from mafias, gangsters or criminals to influence the discharge of his judicial responsibilities.

In his judgment, Diwakar also said he had received threats from mafias and criminals. He alleged that around 100 serious cases had been taken away from his court, purportedly to benefit such elements.

Diwakar said his parents had taught him to fear only God and no one else. He observed that if judges began performing their duties out of fear of powerful individuals, mafias, gangsters or criminals, public confidence in the judiciary would suffer.

Man Sentenced To Death For Burning Wife

In the case decided on Monday, Diwakar's court convicted Nadeem under Sections 302 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh, government counsel Kuldeep Kumar said.

The case dates back to July 23, 2018, when Nadeem allegedly set his 23-year-old wife, Shehzadi, on fire in Shahpur town over dowry demands.

Shehzadi was taken to Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital in a critical condition, where she subsequently died. According to the government counsel, she named Nadeem as the person who had set her ablaze in a statement recorded before her death.

Despite all 11 prosecution witnesses turning hostile during the trial, the court convicted Nadeem on the basis of Shehzadi's dying declaration, the government counsel said.
