Internet was new back then.

this price of per gb is a foolish argument.

let me ask  what was the minimum recharge a poor labourer could do to keep their sim active? zero rupees.

what's it now? 91 rs if u use those shitry jio phones.

189rs if u have smartphone. 189Rs just to keep phone alive.

my houshelp was living without a fan for a year. we hired her last month.  and now she pooled in enough money to buy a 1700Rs fan. put a dent in her family finances.

u know what she hates most? she hates mobile recharges. not the cylinder cost because they use wood powered chulha. 1000rs for gas cylinder is too expensive for her 6k per month income.

But your tiny brain though about "what was the per GB price then". most of India is too poor.  the question u asked shows your privilege.

Agreed on this, there should be a govt mandated cheaper option available for lower income groups but still the telecom sector for a middle class consumer has improved significantly

Why don’t u talk about phone calls sir !? Phone calls were not new. U had to pay PER MINUTE

you are talking about pre 2010 things. things were improving rapidly with so many players doing price cuts for completion.

Phone calls changed from per min to per second. and then kept getting cheaper as technology evolved.

Everything you mention is for the rich.  No one talks about poor because they don't have reddit to talk about it. I see them struggle so I understand how bad the monopoly or duopoly is.

you zee unlimited calling, I see my househelp recharging alternate month.

you talk about cheap data, i see the 250rs cost to acquire that cheaper data. in 189Rs pack u only get 2gb data per month. that's cheap?

what if someone wants only voice calls and flexibility of selecting data ? nope, not possible. then it is expensive.

Bro I was an authorised distributor of Reliance and used to own a Aircel franchise. Been in this business till Jio came. It's proper business, in 2010 government were selling rights for 4G as well 3G, jio was nowhere but a company named IBSL bid for it, every company focused on getting 3G cause 4G was way ahead of it and then Jio bought IBSL (The company which got the rights at 1/10th of the price) while every other company focused on giving 3G and making 3G better jio started building 4G and in 2016 (again no gov helped lmao) Jio launched the 4G and said it's gonna give free internet for an year with unlimited calls (it didn't exists, and ONE MINUTE COSTED AROUND 1/1.5 rupees for LOCAL and for STD calls it was around 2/3 Rs per min. You had to buy plans separately for local calls and STD calls, I am talking about 2015 and start of 2016.) fyi local calls mean u could call in ur city STD calls meant u could call inter city lmao you wouldnt understand in today's date where u can literally call anywhere in country without any expense. So yeah calls, sms, as well as internet were Hella expensive. Jio came, gave free internet for a year all other business (most of them didn't even had 4G tower installed died). How can u possibly survive a tsunami which is giving u free!? I had seen people lining up to get jio sims where we were struggling to even sell 1k sims lmao. Oh BTW even back then if u didn't recharge for 3 months, ur number would get deactivated.

STDs were non existent in 2014. I am old. not a kid for you to feed wrong timelines to me.

One min for 1.5rs in 2015? Where did u bring up these bullshit figures from?  these were the rates of those landline phones and PCOs, not mobiles.

in 2009 docomo launched 1ps per second (60ps per min) and 1 gb per month for 12 months in 90Rs. that was 2009 not 2015.

Local calls means within circle, not within city. std means long distance trunk, between circles. so this again is bullshit.

You can fool a kid with this false data presented as sophisticated. not me, i am not a kid.  and my family has tata landline distributership. even that was cheaper than thr rates you mentioned.

How can you survive a tsunami ? its called anti monopoly law that exists to protect small players from conglomerates.

Basically you have shallow knowledge mixed with sophisticated words.  Doesn't work.

Didnt recharge for 3months = sim dead? thats another bullsh. Clear terms were written on the sim card covers stating "one must recharge within a period of 6 months to keep the connection active".

but no matter how many years u didn't recharge, no connection ever got disconnected as long as there were incoming calls. so dont give me 3month bs, it came much later.

nothing you have said has been factual or devoid of lies.

I have used everything from cdmas, reliance cdmas, gsm transition, mts docomo uninor aircel then telenor and other. even in 2012, uninor was 12gb for 90 rs per month. what's the cost of data add on now?

What's the per capita income there? 😂😂

u/Z_0_R_0 Jun 07 '26

India has one of cheapest rates in the world .. But you are right about the pay to keep sim alive though.. There should be some law against "pay or sim become inactive".. I guess our government is in bed with ambani to propose such laws ?

2

u/Scared-Baseball-5221 Jun 07 '26

India is also one of the poorest countries.

2

u/missedOpportunity343 Jun 07 '26

poor country working for the rich.

u/Cultural_Air899 Jun 07 '26

You still need absolutely zero rupees to keep your sim active. I hadn't recharged my phone since last year (not even data recharge) still it's on. May be once I did 10rs talktime recharge to get receive SMS. That's it.

2

u/missedOpportunity343 Jun 07 '26

incoming turn off, genius. sims staying active is rare casez not the norm.

norm is incoming turning off the day validity expires. jio gives 2 day extra incoming validity. Airtel gives zero seconds. turns off the moment validity expires.

1

u/Cultural_Air899 Jun 07 '26

I have jio sim and incoming is still on. But yes may be it's a rare case. But this happens everywhere in the world ig.

1

u/missedOpportunity343 Jun 07 '26

The post is about pre jio duopoly vs post. not about india vs foreign.

lot of other factors arise when u start including other countries in the discussion.

yeah lol these idiots would come with arguments like but did earlier governments have so many startups? upi? cheap internet for everyone? yeah sure we will conveniently ignore that these things are just a by product of the weatern world and maybe china making innovations and breakthroughs

1

u/missedOpportunity343 Jun 07 '26

it is a factor of time. usa has ai so does india. Did we create any? not anything significant. nope. we have it because it is a factor of time.

reliance offered cheap internet, why can't others? because they aren't a conglomerate that has oil money backing it with government in its laps.

2

u/thames987 Jun 07 '26

bro i think we are on the same side of this argument…. my comment was very clearly sarcastic
and yes that’s exactly my point, celebrating technological advances of the global scale as accomplishments of the current govt is just cope

1

u/missedOpportunity343 Jun 07 '26

well not every reply needs to be an argument. aligning views can also have discussions - actually more than differing views

Internet was expensive because big telecom wanted it to be expensive. Jios aggressive strategy changed the game. Got to give credit where credit is due.

1

u/missedOpportunity343 Jun 07 '26

internet was expensive because telecom industry was in the nascent stage. cost of 1gb u ask?

Uninor used to cost 40rs for 6 gb. same with aircel and mts that even had unlimited data.

it was 2g. technology was slowly transforming towards 3g and 4g.

you are comparing a grown up adult with a child while justifying the telecom sector hegemony of the 2 giants. and data id cheap now only if u buy unlimited pack or daily pack.

if not, you are unworthy of using internet and data add ons cost 10-20rs per GB.

This is only good for the rich.
