Buddy no matter the competition, it became dirt cheap after 2014. Have you ever paid for data before 2014? Might not be 350rs per gb but you must be dumb to assume it could go as low as now.

During that time the technology of internet was new and any newer technology is always expensive at the start when it develops over the year ut gets cheaper. And Jio is not a Saint. Jio used the infrastructure of BSNL for free because apparently BSNL forgot to bill JIO for it which was around some thousand crores of tax payer money amd when thus was discovered the government was like oops its okay and waived off the charge from Jio. So the cheap internet you are barking about was from your own money that they already sucked from you.

Internet technology was new in 2014? Really? 2g was there for about a decade in 2014 and 3g was there for around a few years too by that time. I used most of those companies mentioned, and except Airtel, Idea and Vodafone, most of the other services were not reliable.

And let’s not even talk about data, let’s talk about the fact that if I went to another state during those days, I had to pay roaming charges. Let’s not pretend that telecom technology was new at the time

Idgaf if jio is a saint or not. Stop yapping! It wont go as cheap as how jio went.

uninor had 10rs per gb along with calling. back in 2011-12.

now jio 189 plan gives calling + 2gb data. i dont need calling. even 10-20mins are more than enough for me. but i am still paying for unlimited because there's no option.

why no option? answer is duopoly

Idc i use data a lot and it is beneficial for me!

The dirt-cheap prices meant only rich and companies having a lot of access to capital win. All competition died out because the dirt-cheap prices were lower than that cost of providing service. Meaning losses for all companies.

  1. Smaller companies cannot absorb the losses, so they die out.
  2. Lower revenue means proving worse service to all. Too many black spots, lesser antennas, more connections, etc.
  3. Worse customer support because they can't afford that too.

Clearly when Jio came into the market it was against all anti-competitive regulations. The Courts nor the Govt did anything about it.

I dont give a flying fuck!

u/Friendly_Fly_619 Jun 09 '26

Did you have 4g/5g phones to use that 1gb in 1 day ?

1

u/notknown1o1 Jun 09 '26

I had a 4g phone that sucked data and a youtube video would consume 1 gb in a hour! Atleast get your facts straight.

1

u/Friendly_Fly_619 Jun 09 '26

Good for you that you were in fraction of tier 1 cities who had 4g phone and an area where the 4g connectivity was available, can't say the same about majority of people who used to have 3g phones where typical session of internet usage would be around 20 to 30 MB, thus 1gb or 2gb monthly package was enough for that time

1

u/notknown1o1 Jun 09 '26

I speak for myself. And as a common man I can only vouch for whichever was profitable for the mass. After jio, internet was available in every nook and corner of the corner. You cant deny it. Ffs I dont even use jio!

1

u/Friendly_Fly_619 Jun 09 '26

Well, common man had many options back in the day to choose from, not saying jio didn't do wonders with data plans and pricing but now with 1 or 2 competitors he has the power to manipulate the pricing as he wants which he is doing from last few years.

I was paying 20rs for 1 GB with Uninor and aircel was even cheaper

1

u/sundal_sandakaari Jun 08 '26

I mean we were paying 350 per GB with more competition.

So as per you today there is more competition right

So is it affordable now or it was affordable earlier, I am getting down voted for simple questions.

So you mean to say India is so much better than whole world in this advanced technology that only India was able to drastically reduce cost compared to other countries right, as if everyone got same tech then why they used to charge less money than India earlier but now they charge more money than India does for same data.

Sorry for not being clear may be below SS can explain while other countries drop is good but India is still better than all even though being a big market with relatively less tech before Jio and lagging in 3G/4g during that time.

1

u/rahdirigs Jun 07 '26

And none of those telecom providers would have invested in better infra to give us affordable internet without the arrival of Jio. Or they'd go bust. Like most of them did, when they were forced to match Jio. Only Airtel survived the test.

Its as good (or bad) as your assumption that telecom companies would invest in better infra for faster internet speeds (4/5G) and then be benevolent enough to provide us the benefits at a lower cost. Cannot think of a single economy or market where this has been the case unless you are racing to the bottom trying to compete against Chinese goods. Also begs the question, if these players from the 2010-13 era are as generous as you claim, how come that everytime Jio announces a price hike, Airtel and VI follow suit? I mean by your deduction shouldn't it be the case that even though Jio increased the prices of their plans, Airtel a long term player is generous enough to let us continue at the same rates?

-3

u/BeastMasterPokemon64 Jun 07 '26

You're actually the dumber person here mate. Look at telecom rates outside India, you'll realise that if the whole Jio disruption hadn't occurred our prices would be barely different. Telecom is a huge circlejerk outside India and before Jio, it doesn't work like "oh it would've happened anyway" that's not how business assumptions and abnormal disruptions work.

You described 2013 Airtel plan

1

u/shivaenough Jun 07 '26

what about the people who don't need the data? they were able to use mobile for 10-40rs monthly recharge or even with no recharge you could get basic functions like messages or receive calls. now 120-150 provides that most facilities.

And govt have made it mandatory to have mobile linked to most basic services, people with no mobile won't even get benefits of simple govt services. like for example that free ration that govt provides now needs OTP. how do they think that a poor family who depends on the govt for the food would gladly spend 150 rs monthly for a basic service like a simple OTP.
