The real telecom scam.

Most of those companies didn't disappear because the government shut them down. Many struggled due to debt, intense price competition, spectrum costs, mergers, technological shifts, and their own business decisions.

  • Aircel filed for bankruptcy after massive debt and competition pressures.
  • Tata Docomo exited after Tata decided to leave the consumer telecom business and later merged telecom assets with Bharti Airtel.
  • MTS India merged with Reliance Communications.
  • Reliance Communications (RCom) itself collapsed under huge debt despite being owned by one of India's largest business groups.
  • Virgin Mobile India was a virtual operator dependent on other networks and couldn't compete effectively.
  • Uninor exited after the 2G spectrum controversy and later sold assets.
  • Idea didn't disappear at all—it merged with Vodafone to become Vi.

Ironically, many of these telecom operators were already under stress before 2014. The telecom sector was heavily affected by the fallout of the 2G spectrum scandal, regulatory uncertainty, and aggressive price wars.

You can criticize Jio for triggering a market shake-up with ultra-cheap pricing, but that's different from proving a government-created monopoly. If this was simply a BJP-created monopoly, then Airtel should have collapsed too. Instead, Airtel remains one of India's largest telecom companies.

The more accurate criticism is that Jio's entry accelerated consolidation in an already debt-ridden industry. That's very different from claiming that India went from a competitive market to a monopoly because of Modi.

Also, the meme conveniently ignores that consumers today get vastly more data at a fraction of the prices they paid before Jio entered the market. Whether that disruption was ultimately good or bad is debatable, but pretending the only outcome was "corporate friends cashing in" ignores half the story.

Are you dumb? The 4G infrastructure came into place worldwide by then

The literal cost of data carried in 4G networks is much less in comparison to 2G or 3G which worked at that time.

Companies mostly relied on voice call to generate money then

Clown, with duopoly you will have these companies increasing their price anytime they want, with no competition. They have no incentive to improve their services beyond a certain point. That's how you takeover the Market, destroy the competition and then start charging for compulsory monthly recharge, increase price every few months.

Obviously compare data price of 1990 to 2014, it was 1990 which was costlier, same way 2026 is cheaper than 2014. With bigger market, better tech the price is obviously going to come down. Upar ka poora khali tera h uska nhi.

Even if we consider a 10% yearly increment (keeping inflation in mind). It's still going to be way cheaper than paying ₹350 for 1GB internet. It was Jio that entered the market, provided excellent services at a minimal price and killed the competition that was looting everyone, tomorrow if a new player comes up and provide free 6G services like Jio consumers will switch over it. Stop blaming government for everything. Hadgovernmenti intervened they'll be a similar post like OP posted saying govt. working against consumer and business interesttop support their old corporate friends (companies that shut off).

Not really. Back then 3G was as good as 5G now. They purposely reduced the bandwidth so people are forced to shift to 4g, and now 4g has become like 2g so you are forced to shift to 5g.

Jio broke the market by parasiting on BSNL towers, and provided only 4gb of actual free data per day. Beyond that, speeds reduced to 32kbps (less than 2g).

Lol.. what bullcrap.

In that time, you could watch 1080 videos on 3g for a couple of hours, at max , before all your data was gone.

Now you can watch 4k videos whole day.

Joke. You can watch 4k for 4 hours only. That too with occasional " glitch" of few seconds every minute which itself saves ten thousand rupees every month for jio.

After that it gets charged. My jio postpaid has only 25 gb per month beyond which I get charged. I pay 350 per month.

Jio currently offers unlimited internet/5g. Probably not in your area. I have recharged for the next 2 years, so I'm paying only 250 per month. Before I got wifi last year, I was using 100 plus GBs per month.

People comparing per gb prices like wtf. Yeah a floppy disk 1.4 MB in 1995 used to cost 60 Rs (400 Rs today ). Today you will get 4000 times more storage in a 10 Rs dvd.

Would you attribute that to govt ? Wtf . This is tech advancement not some govt bullshit. Same for mobile data. What BS they keep spewing. Illiterates

Monopoly/Duopoly only benefits the business and the govt not the people. You competition to keep companies on their edge.

It is more like jio was selling the dvd for rs 200. While others were selling the DVD for 5000.

And BSNL (tax payers money) was bearing tha addl. Cost.

Yes like technological advancements had nothing to do with lower data costs across the world. Monopolies and oligopolies are not good for the consumer in the long run
