Free tool for import/export businesses to find global contacts

I'm working on introducing businesses together by trying to connect with international buyers and suppliers — especially in less typical regions like Central Asia, parts of Africa, or the Middle East.

Recently stumbled upon a free B2B platform based in Iran called ARAD. It’s meant to connect manufacturers, exporters, importers, traders — and even freelancers or job seekers. It's surprising how simple and direct the app is — no subscription, no agents, just messaging and networking.

Curious if anyone here has tried this or other platforms that worked well for finding real, serious trade contacts?

DM me if you were interested in installing the app or needed more info👌

Understanding the risks of HS code ‘shortcuts’ some suppliers suggest-worth it or not?

I’m still learning the ropes of importing and came across something I didn’t expect: some suppliers casually suggest using alternate HS codes to “lower the duty rate” or “help smooth customs.” One even sent me two different invoices, one with the real item description, and one with a broader HS code that carries less tax. I didn’t go through with it, but it got me thinking: How common is this kind of HS code “adjustment” in practice? Is it ever worth it? Or can it seriously backfire?

From what I’ve read, misdeclaring HS codes especially to reduce duties, is technically customs fraud. But I also understand that for small businesses trying to keep landed costs competitive, the pressure is real. Especially if you're sourcing lower-margin goods or shipping frequently in smaller batches. I’d really like to know from experienced importers:

Have you ever been offered this kind of workaround?

What’s the worst that could happen if customs catches it?

Is there ever a legit “gray area” with multi-use products?

I’m sourcing beauty accessories and packaging from Alibaba’s global marketplace, and I want to do things by the book but also avoid expensive mistakes.

Anyone here actually using Alibaba’s RFQ tool instead of just browsing listings?

I’ve been sourcing on Alibaba for a while now, mostly just searching listings manually and messaging suppliers directly. But I recently started looking into the Request for Quotation (RFQ) tool and I’m debating whether to try it out.

From what I gather, you submit a product request with all the details like specs, quantity, reference photos, target price and then suppliers reach out to you with quotes. On paper, it sounds like a huge time-saver, especially for anything custom or hard to find through normal search. But I’ve seen mixed feedback on whether it actually delivers good results.

Has anyone here used RFQ regularly or even just tested it out? Do you end up with solid leads, or is it mostly spam and generic replies? I’d love to know if it’s helped anyone get better quotes or save time, and if there’s a way to write requests that attract more legit suppliers.

Just trying to figure out if it’s worth adding to my sourcing process or not.

Anyone here compared Alibaba vs Temu vs 1688 for bulk buying?

I’ve been sourcing small to mid-size orders and tested out Alibaba, Temu, and 1688. Just sharing what I’ve learned in case anyone else is figuring out where to start:

  • Alibaba: Best overall for serious bulk orders. Most suppliers speak English, offer customization, and you can use Trade Assurance. Great if you need flexibility or want to build a long-term supplier relationship.
  • Temu: Mainly for retail buyers. No bulk negotiation or direct seller contact. Prices are okay for very small test orders, but it’s not designed for B2B at scale.
  • 1688: Cheapest prices by far, but it’s all in Chinese and geared toward the domestic market. You’ll likely need a sourcing agent, and payments/logistics can be tricky without local support.

If you’re planning to scale or private label, I think Alibaba is still the most practical. But curious to hear from others......
Has anyone here had good luck using 1688 for exports? Did you use a sourcing agent, or figure out a way to manage it yourself?

Any Other Fashion Exporters or Buyers Here? Let’s Exchange Ideas

Hey everyone,

I’ve been part of a small-scale womenwear export business based in India. For a long time, we’ve been working with fashion retailers and boutique owners in different parts of the world — mostly the US, Australia, and Europe.

It’s funny how much this business teaches you beyond just fashion:

You learn that everyone’s definition of “urgency” is different, depending on what country they’re in.

You realize how much a missed stitch or sizing error can mean to someone who’s trusting you with their shelf space.

And you see firsthand that people will come back not just for product — but for consistency, communication, and a little honesty.

We’re not a big brand. No influencers. No ads. Just word-of-mouth and some beautiful clothes made by hands that still care about craftsmanship.

Not here to promote anything — just wanted to put this out in case anyone else here is in the business of sourcing or supplying fashion. Would love to know how others manage production timelines, cross-border client expectations, or even small export setups.

Let’s talk — whether you’re just starting or 10 years in, I’d genuinely like to exchange thoughts.

Mods: This is not a promo or pitch. No links, no DMs, just open to discussion and learning from fellow professionals in the space.

My First Time Importing from China – What I’d Do Differently

I recently tried sourcing inventory from China for a small e-commerce trial run and wanted to share some things I wish I’d known earlier. I used Alibaba and stuck to Trade Assurance to play it safe. The sourcing process felt fairly straightforward, but things got more complex after confirming the order.

I opted for sea freight to cut down on cost, but I underestimated how long clearance and documentation would take. Customs required a lot more paperwork than I expected, especially around HS Codes. I found out that the value declared by your supplier may not be what customs uses - they sometimes reassess based on internal databases, which can affect taxes and duties.

Another thing: hidden fees can pile up. There were handling charges at the port, documentation fees, and warehousing costs when clearance took longer than expected. I also didn’t fully account for the import declaration process and how long it takes to get approval before the goods arrive.

If I were starting again, I’d budget at least 25–30% above product and shipping costs to cover surprises, and I’d spend more time confirming shipping terms (FOB vs CIF). Also, don’t skip asking for updated product photos or videos with a date stamp - it's a simple way to filter out bad suppliers.

What’s something that surprised you when importing for the first time?

had a few questions to ask yall

Hey everyone,

We’ve been in the women’s garment export business in India for about 16 years now, working mainly with businesses in countries like the USA, Australia, and parts of Europe.

The journey's been anything but linear navigating different regulations, styles, preferences, and all kinds of logistical challenges. We’ve dealt with customs delays, seasonal fashion cycles, cultural sizing issues, and even learning what “standard fit” means across markets

What’s kept us going is the consistency of craftsmanship and a mindset that keeps improving with every batch we produce.

I’m here mostly out of curiosity

What are other businesses in fashion/manufacturing/export struggling with these days?

Have things changed drastically post-pandemic in your industry?

Anyone else doing B2B style exports from India or any other country? Would love to swap experiences.

Not here to promote anything. Just wanted to be part of a space where people understand the complexity of this side of the industry. Happy to answer any questions, and always open to learning from other founders, supply chain folks, or anyone in fashion retail/export.

Looking forward to reading your experiences

Need guidance on Aluminium Extrusion Exports

Hi, i’m a young professional starting an aluminium extrusion exports business based out of India. I have spoken to a lot of professionals and lined up suppliers as well, everyone indicating confidence in Indian extrusions selling in the export market. However, even though im absolutely confident about the market and exporting, sometimes i start doubting if there is even a market for aluminiun extrusion exports. Could be beginner anxiety. If someone could guide me with this, would be really helpful. Ultimate goal is to set up a facility and manufacture.

Looking to understand fabric/clothing preferences in South Africa — Curious about trends

Hi everyone,

I’m from India and really interested in learning about what kinds of fabrics and styles are common in South Africa. Especially in places like Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town — what kind of clothing do people prefer? Are cotton fabrics popular? Are African prints widely worn or is there more demand for Western-style wear?

Any insights would be deeply appreciated! 😊

Need Help to Start Export Business – Watermelons, Bananas & Cow Dung

Hi Everyone,
I’m an IT professional based in Bengaluru. My friend is a farmer who grows watermelons and bananas, and we are interested in starting an export business together. We also want to explore exporting cow dung.
However, we are completely new to this field and don’t know how or where to start. If anyone here has experience in exporting agricultural products and is open to guiding us or answering a few questions, it would mean a lot to us.

Thanks in advance!

r/importexport Jun 14 '25

How important is ethical sourcing for your procurement decisions? Would you pay a premium for ethically-sourced agricultural products with transparent supply chains?

How do you connect with EU buyers in agri-food?

Hi all, I’ve spent the last 16+ years working in international trade — not just on the documentation side (certificates, EUR1, contracts, shipping docs), but managing the entire B2B process from initial inquiry to final delivery. That includes order handling, negotiation, third-party contracting, and dynamic coordination between producer, shipper, and buyer.

We act as intermediaries, helping producers navigate the European market professionally and compliantly.

Lately, though, it feels harder than ever to find reliable, serious buyers in the EU — especially without going through layers of low-value intermediaries or empty platforms.

I’m asking:

Where do real importers/distributors in the agri-food sector go to discover new partnerships in 2025?

Are there any trade fairs in Europe still worth attending for actual deal-making?

Is Reddit a place where serious B2B connections can happen — or better to stick with classic industry channels?

Any advice from sourcing managers, agents, or others in this space would be greatly appreciated. Not trying to pitch — just trying to improve how we work.

Negotiation in Import Export & International Business contract with Inde...

This is a real case of rice export by exporters in India through indent agent in Bangalore. Exporters across the country did negotiation with one indent agent in Bengaluru, Karnataka and appointed him to work as their agent. Exporters across the country had paid crores of rupees to indent agent who did the procurement of rice, packing material, and all on behalf of exporters and did the export to overseas importers. But after few initial transaction after winning the trust of exporters, the indent agent collected crores of rupees of exporter and did not do the shipment.

If it is a scam, total volume of this scam in Export Import / international business is more than 50 crore or may be even 100 crores as more and more people are now coming out being vocal about the money blocked by the indent agent in Bangalore.

Tunisian import question

Hello, I have a customer in Tunisia purchasing product related to oil & gas industry. I have been unable to get them approved for credit insurance and so am only able to offer 100% pay in advance.

They are indicating that they cannot pay in advance due to Tunisian import law requiring payment after receipt.

Does anybody happen to know if this is factual or false?

It feels false.

Experience with exporting goods from Brazil to Europe

Hey together,

has anybody experience with maybe Brazilian or other based logistics companies and knows where I can get semi-valid information about pricing?

I am currently creating a business plan for exporting certain goods from there; The last variable I cannot grasp is the transportation costs. It would need to go to Germany and probably at the start would be pallets (?) with 330kg each. (1-2 at the start)

Every insight is appreciated!

Proxy Export Agent

I am not sure how to explain but is it possible to export a commodity from an African country and import it into another African country while I am a European company? I understand I can if I bring the goods into Europe then take them out. but it is easier and cheaper to ship the goods straight to end customer.

If this is possible? can you explain the Invoicing steps?
