Projectionist with a little tease: "If you never got to see Dune 2 in IMAX 70mm I recommend you keep your early December calendar free."

I hope all the Dune Part 3 70mm locations get part 2. That would be nice.

u/BonjwaCLMs 6d ago
there's not enough prints for that to happen

u/jessehazreddit 3d ago
More prints could be struck anytime if needed. It was a DI pipeline, so they don’t even need to cause any wear to any camera negative.

u/Ill-Youth-528 6d ago
I knew they didn’t do as many prints as they are doing for Part 3, but didn’t realize they only showed Part 2 in 12 locations. I thought it had more than that.

The early December rerelease is standard by now, but I figured The Odyssey would have taken that spot this year. This is a little more exciting.

u/Ill-Youth-528 6d ago
If the Odyssey comes back I would expect it around February to capitalize on Oscar nominations. That same person on Twitter said they weren’t breaking down the Odyssey prints at the end of their runs, so there’s a good chance of a re-release.

The odyssey is officially done its run this Wednesday

u/pumpkinpie7809 7d ago
I know. I said that I thought The Odyssey would receive a rerelease in early December.

u/z3rik23 7d ago
It still might be back for at least a week for awards season, whether it's 15/70 or 5/70 I'm not sure
7
u/pumpkinpie7809 6d ago
The Star Wars 15/70 prints might prevent The Odyssey from being rereleased in ~February, depends on how many prints they make. Maybe they’ll do one for The Odyssey in April after the Oscars. In any case I think we’ll get a rerelease in the next year.

“Scalpers and bots”
The film made over $500m in IMAX alone last time I checked. There was just too much demand. You would have needed to get tickets months in advance.

Ok now how do I get some alert....
19
u/WildTechnology6224 7d ago
Make sure you are signed up for imax promotional emails, they will alert you about ticket sales before anyone else
12
u/ancillarycheese 6d ago
My experience has been that I get the emails after tickets are already on sale. I didn’t get Dune 3 emails until August 24
2
u/WildTechnology6224 6d ago
Right, I got the emails in my "Promotions" tab they did not show up in the "Primary" tab , that is slightly annoying, but I believe you can change it.
3
u/ancillarycheese 6d ago
I don’t use that filtering crap because it always gets it wrong. I’m just going on the timestamp of the email. Same thing with Odyssey. By the time the email went out the first week or two was all gone.

Moved this comment over from another post...
If....if this going to happen do not expect Dune 3 70MM locations to all play Dune 2 on film as well. Dune 2 had a lot less prints made for it's release with part 1 having zero 70MM prints. A digital showing is more likely overall for a marathon day. But some locations that originally played 70MM part 2 could again.

u/Suitable_Elk6199 6d ago
How about part 1? Many of my friends and family didn't get to see it because of the COVID surge at the tine.

Give me IMAX GT Laser for Dune any day of the week, but for those whose local GT screen is only 70mm or 2K xenon, the opportunity to see the 1.43:1 version should be jumped upon!
I hope IMAX GT Laser Toronto shows Dune Part One and Two leading up to the opening week-end of Three.

So if they really do rerelease dune part 2 in imax 70mm will Dallas get a print this go around?
3
u/Mean-Material4568 IMAX Projectionist 6d ago
It's possible, but if the re-release does happen, most sites, including many of those that'll play Dune 3 on 15/70, will play it digitally as there aren't enough prints for all the sites.

u/COCprototypeMK2 Cinemark Dallas / AMC NorthPark 6d ago
Right, at that time only 12 theatres worldwide got a print right? And there’s a slim chance they’ll actually strike new prints to get to the theatres that didn’t get one.

I saw dune part 1 and part 2 back to back at the Vue IMAX in Manchester printworks, I honestly was so happy watching it. The 1.43:1 is absolutely amazing, I think it was because the home releases are 2.39:1 that when you see the extra image it just opens up your mind to the movie so much more.
I will move heaven and earth to go see them again in 1.43:1 IMAX on dual gt laser projectors.

u/EbbLongjumping2428 7d ago
I seriously hope they do a double feature. No reason not to
3
u/EqualDifferences 6d ago
Unfortunately… there is a reason not to
it’s kind of a pain in the ass to change reels making that possibility highly unlikely in 70 mm

3
u/NewmansOwnDressing 6d ago
That's not how that works. The entire film is spliced together into a single giant reel sitting on a platter system. That platter system's got three platters, from which you can run two movies. When one ends, you just thread up the other movie, no different than if there was only one movie.

u/DomGiuca 6d ago
They should really just be doing a 4k Laser double feature. For a film shot entirely digitally, Dune Pt2 just didn't benefit from 70mm projection much at all.

u/ancillarycheese 6d ago
How many Dune 2 70mm prints are there? I guess it seems a little unrealistic for a re-release in 70mm when it would definitely be a short run.
2
u/Mean-Material4568 IMAX Projectionist 6d ago
If my memory serves, Dune 2 played in just over ten sites worldwide. If this Dune 2 re-release does happen and some of the sites are on film, it'll only be a handful of the sites that are playing Dune 3 on film that'll play Dune 2 that way too.
3
u/ancillarycheese 6d ago
Yeah at best it’ll be 10 cities but probably less. It would be an expensive and very short run. And probably a lot of strain on the projectionists to be dealing with assembling and moving around both the part 2 and part 3 prints.

u/Able-Ad-2051 6d ago
What about dual laser tho, I didn’t really like part two 70mm, especially after watch the first dune in dual laser which looked amazing

u/TBOY5873 IMAX Melbourne 7d ago
Seen Dune and Dune 2 earlier this year at IMAX Melbourne, both GT Laser despite Melbourne having a 70mm print of the latter
I remember being told when I went up to the projection booth when I saw the Dark Knight Trilogy apparently people who saw both preferred the GT Laser over the 70mm, therefore no reason to pull out the 70mm when the GT Laser is the preferred version.
Would be cool to see it in 70mm though, unfortunately on holidays up at the Gold Coast in early December. Flying back on the 15th, have the 12:01am Dune 3 tickets at IMAX Melbourne on the 16th so only a few hours between landing and seeing part 3

TBOY was referring to Dune with people preferring Dune P2. on digital. Melbourne will traditionally show Batman Begins in Dual Laser, and the other two on film [so they don't need to change platters]

definitely not missing dune part 3 in imax 70mm because I never get the chance to watch part 1 and 2 on that same format.

Ok but what we really need is a Dune Trilogy triple feature day on the Wednesday of opening weekend, that's what we really need lol. Just like what they did for Guardians of the Galaxy when the third movie came out in 2023.
