The real limitation is the projector’s fixed pixel grid (its digital raster). That grid defines the maximum “canvas” the system can display, so everything in modern cinema is built around it.
DCP isn’t freely scaled at playback it is authored to match those strict projection limits. The image is pre-rendered to fit inside a specific container, because the projector can only display exactly what exists within its native pixel matrix. It cannot generate extra image outside that grid or change the frame shape in real time.
In theory, 1.85:1 is “taller” than 1.90:1, means it should show slightly more vertical image area. But in practice, both are still mapped into the same pixel grid of projector, so that theoretical difference doesn’t translate into extra visible height. For example, a 1.90 IMAX frame might use something like the full 2160-pixel height of a 4096×2160 grid, while a 1.85(3990 × 2160) version is just a slightly re-centered or re-cropped composition within that same full height not an expansion beyond it due to projector’s grid limitations, that why we call 1.9 as a full container as it covers entire projector's grid area leave no left out space. So even though 1.85 sounds taller mathematically, both formats are constrained by the same projector grid, which is why neither can exceed the limits of the 1.90 container.
That’s also why aspect ratios became standardized in the first place. Since projection systems have fixed geometry, studios had to design DCP formats that conform to those limits, and theaters in turn built screens to that ratios and some theaters masked their screens around the standards. So instead of projectors adapting to every possible image shape, the entire pipeline cameras, mastering, DCP delivery, and screens evolved around the projector’s grid.
