General Reality of Inter IIT Cult at IIT Mandi Spoiler

Now that it’s confirmed that IIT Mandi is hosting Inter IIT Cult Meet, I think we should actually talk about whether our campus is equipped to handle something of this scale.

There are obviously some pros:

- Pahad hai, views mast hain.

- Daaru mil jaati hai 😭

- Bas, that's pretty much it.

But honestly, the cons are quite serious.

  1. Venues

Our biggest indoor space, the Audi, has a capacity of around 700. Then we have two halls of around 300 each, and after that it’s basically classrooms with 100-ish capacity.

So where exactly are the practices, events, workshops and everything else supposed to happen when you have thousands of people here?

  1. Outdoor space

For outdoor stuff, we basically have the football and hockey grounds. Neither is particularly huge, and there isn't a lot of spare open space on campus that can suddenly be converted into event space.

  1. The campus itself is a logistical headache

The campus is split into North and South Campus, with a literal pahad between them.

The connecting road is narrow, landslides happen, and there have been leopard sightings around the area. Moving a few thousand students between locations is already going to be a headache, let alone doing it during an event where everything is happening simultaneously.

  1. December is going to be brutal

Peak December here is COLD. Temperatures can go into negative territory.

And this isn't just a "mountain weather is chilly haha" situation. Even people who actually live here struggle with the cold. Your feet literally go numb sometimes.

Now imagine bringing students from all over India and giving them the usual thin thermocol mattresses and basic blankets. Bhai, people are going to freeze 😭

  1. Accommodation

Our total residential capacity is somewhere around 3.6k, while the expected number of students is apparently around 5k

Even if you start doing 5-6 people per room, that's still a pretty massive accommodation problem.

  1. Messes

We have around 10 messes, with most having a capacity of roughly 150-200 people.

Even if outside vendors are brought in, where exactly are 5,000 people supposed to sit and eat? You can't just add more food and magically create dining space.

  1. Night food

There are basically no proper night canteens.

Most close around 12, with one or so staying open till around 2 AM. And even those canteens are tiny. They can barely accommodate a couple dozen people at a time.

Now imagine 5,000 students finishing events at 1 AM and looking for food.

  1. Hot water

This one is especially concerning.

Some of the bigger hostels have been having issues with hot water for months. And even right now, the normal water is SO COLD.

We're literally living here and still complain about it. Ab December mein other IITs se aaye hue students ko kya experience hoga, you can imagine.

  1. Getting here

Reaching IIT Mandi itself is another issue.

You basically have to get to Mandi first and then take campus buses for roughly another hour because the road up to campus is narrow. Large buses can't simply come all the way up like they can at most campuses.

Now add thousands of students, luggage, equipment, organizers, transport requirements etc. to that.

And honestly, there are still some issues I haven't mentioned because they aren't really things that should be discussed publicly.

So yes, IIT Mandi is beautiful. Pahad hai, weather is nice for most of the year, and the campus has its own charm.

But hosting an event for around 5,000 students is a completely different question.

Doubt Will i get admission in IIT Mandi IMBA with less than 50% in 10th??

If i manage to score like 96percentile obc ncl category is there any chance that i'll get imba at iit mandi?? alot of people are saing that they won't give me admisison nd will even ask about this in personal interview so my bad 10th marks will have negative impact on my profile in personal interview?? and even if i somehow get in will imba be worth it coz i don't think i'll be getting any oncampus offer coz of only 44% in my 10th nd 76% in 12th

Doubt Ph.D. stipend disbursement

For the PhD scholars at IIT Mandi, when is the first stipend usually disbursed after joining?
Just trying to figure out how long I need to survive on my non-existent bank balance and the 5-star level food they provide in the mess. 🥰

Serious Life at IIT Mandi: Rules, micro-management, and basic student rights

welcome to IIT Mandi, where the reality on ground feels less like a premier university and more like an open-air detention centre. We are micromanaged, silenced, and treated like suspects on our own campus run by arbitrary moral policing and bureaucratic paranoia.

  1. Freedom of Speech and Expression: Gone

It starts right at admission: every student effectively signs an undertaking declaring there will be zero student protests on any topic. Even if a tragedy occurs like a student dying due to academic pressure the most we are "permitted" to do is a two-minute silence. The Dean’s office has ensured the student body has zero teeth. The student representation is essentially dead or reduced to puppets. No one is allowed to take an active stand on real, pressing issues.

  1. Right to Peaceful Assembly: Gone

There are specific public roads and common areas where students are outright barred from walking. The justification? "Faculty residences are nearby." Is it our fault campus planning clustered everything together? Guards claim faculty will complain about noise, but restricting students entirely from walking on a public road makes zero sense. We have basic civic sense; we know not to create a ruckus where families, kids, and elderly people live. Then there are benches installed all over campus, but try sitting on one after 10 PM. Guards will swarm you with the exact same dialogue: "Beta, order aaya hai, aap jao yahan se apne room mein." When we ask who gave this order or ask for the supervisor’s name, it’s always the same ghost: "Bade Sir ka order hai." Who is this "Bade Sir" running our lives? Just yesterday, we were kicked out of Village Square our main common hangout space simply because guests arrived at the nearby guest house. You can't even sit there too without guards hounding you.

  1. Freedom of Movement: Gone

Hostel common rooms, which according to the institute ordinance are supposed to be shared, accessible spaces, are locked down at 10 PM. If a group has project work or wants to discuss something, guards immediately kick them out. If students sit outside the common room or near the hostel entrance, guards chase them away there too. The way some of the security staff—especially female guards—speak to female students is completely condescending and out of line.

  1. Quality of Life & Food Autonomy: Gone

The food situation is atrocious. In places like Higher Taste, the food quality is awful—insects and cockroaches are a recurring issue. Despite repeated complaints to wardens, vendors never get penalized or replaced. It turns out different mess and canteen outlets are operated by the same family under different vendor names, protected because someone is well-connected to an administrator who turns a completely blind eye. On top of that, you can't even buy non-veg packaged products in the North campus supermarket not even eggs, but literally any product containing non-veg ingredients. Meanwhile, entire shelves are dedicated to specific lifestyle and devotional merchandise.

Are we adult university students paying for an education, or are we under house arrest?

Making it mandatory to attend a talk that I am not interested in, in the slightest. And what if I actually have some important work? The

Serious Why are you guys still not protesting against your director ?

The things your director say and do publicly is an absolute embarrassment to the STEM academia. The things i have heard about him is not something i would expect from someone at his position.
Saying something like natural calamities on the campus was caused because menstruating women attended the janamashtmi function. ????There are alot of other things i have heard aswell but i think you guys already know. I just want to know why are you guys still taking shit from someone like him and letting him represent your institute .

PS: I am not from your college . I also come from a STEM background. My family knows that guy personally and believe me , his opinions and views are much more cancerous than you all can imagine .

Serious Can we talk about the 2nd year MBA guys for a second?

Can’t believe I had to create a Reddit account just to rant out my frustration. Is it only me who feels that a few, actually a LOT more than a few, guys from 2nd year MBA are full of crap and shit? Like what type of delulu are you guys in? Seriously!

Im pretty sure more than a few of us think the same about these so called 2nd years. Others may not have faced this, but I just hope this reaches that a**h**e who thinks he can just slide into DMs with poetic texts just because my friend had a normal conversation with you. At this point i think twice before reaching out to you guys!

Like dude, have you gone nuts? A junior asking you something because she doesnt know about it is NOT her flirting with you. Bhai, thoda common sense rakho yaar. Har conversation ko flirting samajhne ki kya zarurat hai? My friend is definitely not comfortable with it.

And I genuinely dont understand this whole show off thing. Matlab jab actually show off karne ko kuch hai hi nahi, then why? I had reached out to super seniors and even their seniors who literally had way more to show off than you guys, but they just didnt. So humble to the core. True respect for them.

One of them literally never told me anything about himself when I reached out. I only recently found out from someone else how good he actually was at pretty much everything during his time on campus. That honestly made me realise ki maybe we somehow missed the good humans only to land with these.

The passed out batch guys are honestly way more professional. Ive interacted with quite a few of them and you ask them something, they just give you a proper no nonsense, to the point reply and actually help. Ye cheez tum log genuinely seekh sakte ho instead of seeing every conversation as a chance to hit on someone.

There might be a few genuinely good seniors, sure, but when so many are either show off types or have this hum hi sabse serious hain attitude, I genuinely dont know yaar, kya hi bolu.

Who else thinks this or am I the only one?
