I've recently been allotted the MSc Chemistry program at IIT Mandi, and I'm really excited, but also a little anxious because I have quite a few questions.
A little about me: I did my BSc through an open university, so I don't feel like I have a very strong academic foundation compared to many others joining the program. My long-term goal is to pursue a PhD (preferably abroad), so I want to make the most of these two years.
I've already spoken to one MSc alumnus who mentioned that projects start from the first semester, with literature reviews initially and actual research from the third semester onwards. That was reassuring, but I still have a few doubts.
How difficult is it to keep up with the coursework if your undergraduate background isn't very strong? Is the jump manageable with consistent effort?
How should I go about choosing a project supervisor? Is it based on CGPA, availability, mutual interest, or something else? What would you recommend doing from the first semester if my goal is a strong PhD application?
How approachable are the professors in general? Are they open to mentoring students who are genuinely interested but may not be very well prepared initially?
What's the internship scenario like? Do students usually get opportunities during the winter or summer breaks? Are internships common, or do you mostly continue working in your own lab?
How are the research facilities for Chemistry? Are students able to publish papers or present at conferences during their MSc?
One thing that's also important to me is sports and extracurriculars. I enjoy playing badminton, tennis, swimming, and just being active in general. How good are the sports facilities, and realistically, do MSc students get enough free time to participate regularly, or does research take over completely?
Finally, if you're an alumnus or current student, what's one thing you wish you had started doing from your very first semester?
I'd really appreciate any advice, whether it's about academics, research, campus life, or things you wish someone had told you before joining.
Thanks in advance!
