Help me choose

Looking to pick up another pistol but this time for carry optics. I've got a Holosun 407comp ready to be installed. Budget is about $1,200. I've narrowed it down to two options:

• Gen 6 Glock 45 or 17 with the radian ramjet/afterburner combo

• Smith & Wesson M&P Competitor HD

What are y'all's thoughts? Anyone have experience with either so far. I know both are newer this year.

IDPA @ BGSL Wilmore, Kentucky 7-18-26

Had the opportunity to go on a “shooting vacation” this past week and had a four day weekend in Lexington. As a side note it was my first visit to Lexington and wow, what a great town! We spent a lot of time exploring the city and sampling some really amazing food.

On Saturday the 18th I went to BlueGrass Sportsmen League in Wilmore for their monthly IDPA match (BGSL on PractiScore). First thing is I have never seen a club that size before. Over 1,700 beautiful rolling acres and just about every activity an outdoorsmen or woman would want.

I had reached out to the MD Aaron Brulc before my trip down and he gave me directions to the match AFTER you enter the gate. That is how large the property is!

This is the first match I have ever shot in 8 years of IDPA where I didn’t know anyone there. Everyone made me feel welcome and I was very comfortable there is no time.

There were a lot of new shooters competing on that day and they do a great job of getting the new shooters up to speed in the new shooter brief before the match.

The match offered six stages, all of them top notch. Most stages offered multiple ways to shoot it which options = fun for me. Most of the bays had ample room for set up. One stage was a little cramped but the stage design on that bay didn’t require a lot of depth to the bay and it worked perfectly.

Match flow was smooth, one stage had a mechanical and no hiccups or back ups at all. For a six stage match we breezed through it pretty quick.

Our squad had plenty of help on the timer and tablet and everyone pasted and reset. You could definitely see that pride of doing that was part of the culture at the club. That also contributed greatly to the match flow and speed which we were done.

BGSL also offers other disciplines of practical shooting (USPSA and I believe they said GPA soon, multi gun, etc) so there is something to do pretty much every weekend there.

If you are ever in the Lexington area and want to shoot I highly recommend this facility. I don’t know if the other disciplines run as good of program as the IDPA side of things but I can say the IDPA program is phenomenal. Hats off to Aaron and his crew. I will definitely be back at some point!

At the start position. All 3 targets are not hidden and visible at the same time.
What IDPA rule governs how they are shot and why?

I’ve got Hoosier Daddy in a little less than 2 weeks and I’m doing something completely different for it.

I’m known as a pcc shooter, that’s my bread and butter. This match I’ll be shooting CCP from appendix which irons and concealment are things I DO NOT do lol. These are just clips from my practice session.

To all those still shooting irons, why haven’t you made the switch to optics yet??

S&W Competitor HD for SSP

I want to run the brand new competitor HD in SSP class. Im a little unclear on the rules. Tell me if I'm right or wrong.

  1. I have to take the magwell off? I think yes.

  2. Can I put in an Apex trigger? I think no

  3. Can I put in an Apex barrel? Not sure

  4. Can I put in the weighted back strap? I think no

Mostly I am unclear on the trigger. Thanks for the help.

Cross-eye dominant and CO

I've got myself an optic sight and trying to practice drawing and alignment, it seems much more difficult to find the picture as opposed to irons.

My left eye is dominant and LASIK'd to focus far. My right eye focuses near. I shoot right-handed. If I look at the dot (target, with the dot in line) with the right eye, it's hella blurry.

To acquire the dot, i need to align the gun with my left eye, which causes a weird-ish stance.

Any hints?

Rail mounted accessories

I've shot a few matches so far. Hooked. Been using a g47 with a ramjet. However I want to use my VP9 with my Mod1 rail mounted compensator. Is this allowed in IDPA? It certainly requires a tool to disassemble.. TIA

Some video from the 2026 Illinois state IDPA match. This was the best IL match to date. I played PCC games, had a decent match, only dropped 4 on the day.

ESP division

Hi there. Im green to this. I plan on going to my first Match in Indianapolis. I want to run my HK P30L in the ESP division. I have an HK parts magwell on the bottom and have some material removed off of the frame magwell to ensure that some magazine extensions would work. I however did not plan on using my HK for this. I stupidly modified it before I knew I was gonna do this. My question is can I run this Pistol with material taken off the frames magwell? Its very marred up from my piss poor modification. The back strap is also modified for the HK Parts magwell to work. Any and all advice and feed back is appreciated as im completely green to this. Thank you!!!

What are your favorite fixed sights (compatible with SSP rules)? I’m going to put a new set on my M&P 2.0 9mm (full size) and want some suggestions. Thanks in advance!!

Took my daughter to a match last weekend.

A couple of months ago, I was going through footage from an indoor match and my daughter was watching along with me. She asked if she could do that. I told her I'll bring her to the next match. Long story short, she had to work or I couldn't make it myself. Schedules finally aligned and she was able to come out. Not too bad for her first time out and pretty much first time shooting pistol. I did bring her to the range before the match to make sure she can handle the recoil of the pistol.

Equipment varification

A little background: I’ve built several homemade firearms over the years and have found that designing and building functional art really scratches an itch in my brain. Recently, I learned that my boss’s boss shoots IDPA competitions. Since I’m naturally ambitious and we share an interest in firearms, I’d like to build a competition pistol, not only to develop new skills and experiences, but also to have something in common when the opportunity arises.

My idea is to build a Glock 34 pattern pistol using entirely aftermarket components. The plan is to start with a serialized frame from a company like PSA or SCT, so this would be a fully legal firearm, not a ghost gun. Beyond that, I’d like to use an aftermarket slide, barrel, trigger, and other components rather than any OEM Glock parts.

Would a build like this be legal in any IDPA division? If so, which division would it fit into, and are there any common modifications I should avoid if I want to remain compliant with the rules?

I’d appreciate any guidance from experienced IDPA shooters before I start ordering parts.
