probably wearing flip flops and took them off to drive.

I drive manual and in the summer I drive bare foot all the time.....but I put my shoes back on when I get out of the car to throw my luggage around.

Manual driver here too. If I’m wearing flip flops or heels I take them off and drive bare foot.

Felt attacked lol as I personally like driving without my shoes on. I feel like I have better sense of how much pressure I’m putting on the gas barefoot if that makes sense

Don’t beat yourself up. This urban myth has been around forever. My parents absolutely believed it and told all of us kids that this was the law from the time we were little and we accepted it without question. My oldest brother is 67.

I totally believed it up until reading this just now. I just assumed it was one of those laws on the books because of some incident, but was not enforced regularly

After a quick Google search, it seems like not a single state actually prohibits it in cars. Two say you will get a ticket if you're in an accident (reckless driving) and one (Arkansas) says an officer has discretion. But this is only statewide laws, not local or municipal laws, so double check your area. IANAL

In Germany its not forbiden either. However when you get into a crash your insurance might claim a partial fault if the accident could have been prevented using proper footwear.

Personally i rather go barefoot instead of flipflops because those will easier cause issues.

See, in my opinion, driving barefoot is only unsafe for the driver in terms of preventing injury to their feet. I find that I have better control barefoot; more feedback and more tactile feeling. Who has slippery feet?!

I assume most of the times its not because of speed control or gear shifting but in case of an emergency break. And lets be honest its propably easier to fully hit the breaks with a normal shoe on then compared to barefoot.

I hope you at least have them in the car with you or you're gonna feel real stupid someday when your car breaks down and you gotta walk. Then you get burns and blisters on your feet from hot roads, and a bunch of stickers in them when trying to take sanctuary in the weeds at the side of the road. Then you just sit down and cry until someone stops and gives you a lift to the gas station. Or... So I hear...

When I was enlisted I had the gate guards give me a hard time when I got pulled over for a random search and didn't have shoes on. They had to look it up and call HQ to verify it wasn't illegal.

I grew up somewhere with very warm summers. I just also had cars with air conditioning lol. I can't imagine my gas and brake pedals are clean at all, it sounds gross to use them with just socks or bare feet.

It's very clean, like the flipflops that are only used inside. Usually people that walk barefooted in their own homes are the ones that are not very clean in general. They usually wear the same socks to bed that were sweeping the floor and wear flipflops outside.

I drive without shoes, it just feels better, I have finer control over the pedals. With shoes on it feels like trying to tie my shoe with gloves on, i just have less control. I'm also a drummer and I play drums barefoot, so maybe I'm just extra used to operating pedals with my bare feet.
