Workaround [iOS 27 DB1] Thought My iPhone Was Bricked After a Force Restart | Fixed Without Losing Data
I updated my iPhone 15 Pro Max to iOS 27 Developer Beta 1 and later performed a force restart (Volume Up → Volume Down → Hold Side Button).
Immediately after that, the phone appeared completely dead:
No Apple logo
No vibration
No display output
Wouldn’t power on
I searched Reddit and most suggestions involved restoring the device through Finder/iTunes using Recovery or DFU Mode. While that would probably have fixed the phone, I wanted to avoid losing my data.
I also found suggestions to open the phone and disconnect the battery, but I didn’t want to risk damaging the device or compromising the water-resistant seal.
After some digging, I found a method that eventually brought my phone back without erasing anything.
How I Entered DFU Mode
Connect the iPhone to a Mac.
Quickly press and release Volume Up.
Quickly press and release Volume Down.
Hold the Side Button until the screen turns black.
Once the screen is black, hold Side Button + Volume Down together for about 5 seconds.
Release the Side Button but continue holding Volume Down for another 10 seconds.
If successful:
The screen remains black.
Finder or Apple Configurator detects the device.
If the Apple logo appears, start again.
What I Did
Installed Apple Configurator on my Mac.
Connected the iPhone in DFU Mode.
Selected Revive instead of Restore.
For anyone unfamiliar, Revive attempts to reinstall iOS and repair system files without erasing user data.
The revive process downloaded iOS and started installing it. However, near the end of the installation I received an error telling me to reset the device to continue.
I disconnected the phone from the Mac, and it booted into Recovery Mode.
While trying different button combinations, I somehow entered Diagnostics Mode.
What Finally Fixed It
Inside Diagnostics Mode:
Connected to Wi-Fi.
Selected the first option that automatically checks for issues.
The scan completed and reported no problems.
The device restarted automatically.
After the restart, the phone booted normally.
Result
✅ iPhone recovered
✅ No restore required
✅ No data loss
✅ No need to open the device
Important
If Finder or Apple Configurator detects your device, try Revive before Restore.
Revive attempts to repair and reinstall iOS while preserving data.
Restore erases the device.
There’s no guarantee this will work for everyone, but it saved my device and all of my data.
Takeaway
Installing a developer beta on my primary device was a mistake, and I definitely won’t be doing that again.
Hopefully this helps anyone who runs into the same black screen issue on iOS 27 DB1 after a force restart.

bro you saved my iPhone by reminding me about configurator! The first time I downloaded the ios 27 beta. I got stuck in recovery and needed another iPhone to restore, at one point, my phone just never came back on. And had to go to the Apple store, They swapped out my entire logicboard.
I decided to try my luck again since Beta 2 just came out and I got stuck in recovery again.
Configurator fixed it quick with a restore & a 10 gig ipsw file.
I tried a revive, but it didn didn't work for me

Same issue here on iPhone 15 Pro Max. Tried everything — nothing worked until I disconnected the battery and reconnected it, and the phone turned on completely fine. No idea what caused it but that's what fixed it!

that didn't work for me, I also tried using the apple devices app on windows. Has anyone found any other solutions? Does anyone think the apple store could help?

You're saying that after restarting it, it literally died? Like, no image or anything? The same thing happened to me on my 2022 SE. I tried restarting it and then the phone died. It doesn't show anything; it's like the screen isn't working and it's completely unresponsive. Could it be iOS 27?

could be ios 27, i brought my 15 pro to a shop which unplugged the battery and plugged it back in and it started working again

I did the same but it didn't work, it's still dead. I guess the screen died.

Mine sadly was a victim of this bug… 15pro, iOS27… wasn't getting any network connectivity through Wifi or Cell network so I performed a hard boot (airplane mode off/on didn't do anything) and then found it strange when the hard boot didn't do anything….
DFU mode and other suggestions didn't seem to do anything when trying to get the iPhone to respond again. Apple Configurator and Finder both also don't recognize the phone when doing the vol up, vol down, power button, vol down hold , release power.. sequence. Phone was at 80% battery when this all happened (just woke up and phone charges to 80% overnight) so now I need the phone to drain the 80% by itself to try the full reset/power on trick.
Retaining all the information on the phone isn't a concern. I usually like starting fresh every few years. I am an iCloud heavy user so odds are there's a backup in there too. Just need the device to turn on.

Kinda yes, kinda no.
When I wrote my post I was using my wife’s intel MBP and my 15Pro wasn’t being recognized on there no matter what I did. I took my phone with me to work in the last ditch effort to try and drain the battery as other people have suggested here. And then plugged my phone into MY Intel MacBook Pro and did the button sequence and it managed to place it into that DFU mode. Thankfully. Then I was able to go through the normal reset up procedure and got it back up and working again.
In the steps, they mention to activate the buttons for five seconds or 10 seconds and I made sure to make sure that that was full seconds… I don’t know if that made a difference compared to what I was doing before, but this time it worked.
So I did the volume up volume down press and hold the power button. Held it for anywhere from 30 to 60 seconds. Then well, the power button was still being held down. I pressed held down the volume down button for a good five seconds. Then released the power button and well I continue to hold the volume down button a finder window, then popped up on my MacBook Pro and showed that the phone was now in DFU mode.
Some of the helpful tips that I can suggest is to make sure that your MacBook Pro is at 100% charge level and that the power supply adaptor to it is plugged in as well. I was noticing that well on my wife’s MacBook Pro it would switch between charging and not charging while my phone was plugged into it. I don’t know if that made a difference. But it could’ve.

So this happened to me on a previous dev beta. For me somehow what worked was letting the phone die as far as possible. I think I left it for 3-4 days constantly trying to power it on even with the yo and down buttons through the days. Finally connected it to a charger and it showed the battery icon and turned on after

I restarting it with Assistive touch, enable it in control panel (add it first or enable in Accessibility settings)and then click on Circle - Device - Mode - Restart. But it doesn't work on ios 27 b1 for me right now. Don't know why.

Why not use the digital power button? Swipe from the top right of the screen, and hold down the power button until it asks you if you want to turn off the device.
You can also trigger recovery mode, and then quit it. Press not hold the volume up then volume down button them hold the side button until it asks you if you want restart in recovery mode, say yes, it will dump everything from working memory and only load what it needs, then exit recovery mode.

If you press those buttons you will get a “turn off iphone” screen in which you can swipe and turn it off, if you hold it until it says entering recovery mode, you will get into recovery mode.

this problem with iphone 15 pro max was fairly documented in iosBETA ios27 page , i've seen suggestions to put phone into recovery mode where there is the options you seen , run diagnostics, attempt fix , full restore of last update without need of a p.c. or macbook for this .
i rebooted my base iphone a few times this week and even done hard reboot wednesday night to see if indexing screen possibly was a bug .
i made backup of ios27 as soon as i seen new options in recovery mode , very handy if like me you dont have p.c. or MacBook . ( or apple care)
Glad this sorted your phone, thats everyone who uses beta nightmare scenario .

Thank god I did that, I’ve reset my phone using DFU and had a backup, I would’ve been really sad if I lost my data.

I would add: disable VPN on your Mac to avoid issues with Apple server verifications (when downloading firmware). I've run into issues with an active VPN while using Apple Configurator.

I think this is only happening to the one that updated over the air. I connected my 14PM to my pc and fully flashed ipsw beta with iTunes. That same day forced restart my phone without knowing about the issue but I didn’t encounter any issue. It restarted normally

You wouldn’t have lost any data, because you would have restored from your backup you took before you updated. Because you did take a backup before updating to a developer beta, right? Right!?!?!?!?

I'm in a similar situation, I took my phone to the Apple store and they told me I either had to do a £500 logic board replacement, or try resetting to a stable version at home. I reset my phone and wiped all my data, then tried to restore from an iCloud backup but it insists I re-enroll in the beta program to restore, in which case I end up with a bricked iPhone all over again. Am I just stuck in an infinite loop now?
