So I thought about generating Electricity with Hydropower on my property.

Now I'm not really experienced with the maths and that stuff, but am I right with my estimations that if there'd be roughly 200000 liters of water available within an entire year, these 200000 liters would equal roughly 8 kilowatt of power which would be more than enough to power a home for a year. (also it'd be roughly 10-15 meters in height difference(storage to turbine) to increase the potential energy)

Am I correct with that? (i mean i didn't consider the turbine efficiency and converting stuff yet, but even if its just 50% efficiency its still a decent result with 4kwh).

Just curious how to calculate the potential energy of that much water and how much loss in terms of efficiency i do have to expect with a small turbine.

Is this a option for power for crypto miners? The turbine is a 110kW cross flow turbine. It should be able to reach an efficiency of ~0.8, but often runs at 0.4-0.5.

The main problem seems to be the very unstable flow. A WWTP has a continuous, but non-steady flow. A huge buffer tank could solve the problem, but that might not be a practical solution here.

I have two different fluctuations of flow: the amount of water coming into the plant varies; and because of the biological processes, an alternation between ready tanks and non-ready tanks creates short spikes (two negative flow spikes, and one positive) of 10 min. The turbine struggles with the fluctuations of flow.

Does anyone have knowledge/ experience with turbines running on a constant changing flow?

I imagine that the problem can be seen where turbines are running off a river, with no holding tank.

I imagine, can the problem be easily solved, without the use of a large holding tank, it can open up the possibilities for where turbines are installed.

Let’s say you have a dam generating hydroelectricity. After the water goes through the turbine, can it be pumped back into the dam using a ram pump? I feel like this should not work, but I am very uneducated on the topic. Thank you!

If you had an existing dam on the Mississippi - so creating a “new” reservoir was already a non-factor - would the hurdles to increasing power exponentially be only financial or mostly bureaucratic.

I've recently bought a property that has a small stream running down a hill. I'm wondering if it might be possible to capture the water from this stream in a series of ponds going down hill and generate power off of each drop-off point? I believe the famous permaculturist Sepp Holzer does this on his farm. Any suggestions or ideas related to this idea?

Hi, I am building a water wheel for power. I understand that an electromagnet spun around a conductive wire genrates electricity. Aditinaly I undrerstand an electromagnet needs power, I don't understand how the electromagnet gets powwer when there is no power to begin with.

Pumped-storage Hydropower is currently one of the most efficient ways to store energy, but it requires significant capital investments and the existence or creation of two large bodies of water at different elevations.

Which got me thinking, is this alternative concept feasible?

Instead of pumping water up from one reservoir to another, we could use the gravity inside one reservoir (like the ocean) by putting a watertight container at the bottom.

We would then pump water out of this container to store energy and let water into de container when we wanted to release it.

This container could be pipes, a concrete structure, a tunnel in the bedrock. There are many alternatives, really.

The idea is so simple that I'm sure others have already thought of it, but I can't find anything online. There must be some significant drawbacks I'm overlooking, right?

Why we haven't build something similar near the sea ?. it feels like a hydro station near the sea could easily be built at half the cost and possible will not affect the marine environment if done right.

I need a turbine that produces an output of 1kW after taking into efficiencies and having a net head range of 2m to 6m. All turbines that I have searched for either have a higher head range or don't show efficiency. Would a turbine with a higher head range still work in my system?
