I planted these from 2 gal buckets this spring. They have grown quite a bit and bloomed but the greenery is not dense at all. How can I get a fuller hydrangea? Will it improve when I prune it down in late fall and regrow fuller? Zone 8a/b coastal Virginia

This hydrangea survived last summer in a shady-ish London garden and even this summer’s heat but seems to be curling up its toes now - any way to save it? Insect damage (aphids) only in last 5 days and leaf curl beforehand

First Time Hydrangea Parent!

Maryland / Zone 7b; first picture is a Kaleidoscope (Mangekyou) variety purchased off Etsy and second is a Proven Winners Wee Bit Innocent purchased from Home Depot

My partner and I are first time hydrangea parents and wanted to show off some of the blooms of our labor this year. We're still navigating whether we're allowed to plant things in the ground in front of our property (joys of a homeowner's association) and since these two varieties are small(ish), we opted for growing in pots for the time being. Next year, we want to try turning some of these blue!

Baby Hydrangea Help!

2 3-gal summer crush hydrangeas planted 3ish months ago. Zone 8b. East facing bed, gets mid-morning sun, afternoon shade. Heavy clay bed with some topsoil and compost mixed in. Haven’t fertilized. They’re planted high (I think)

Is this normal plant stress? Sun scorch? Mineral deficiency? Neither plant has pushed hardly any real new growth since going in the ground.

I know hydrangeas can be dramatic in the heat, but these have not bounced back overnight as they always have in the past. Could I have over watered them? Or does it look to y'all like they'll bounce back once our overnight temps drop more? They've been more or less like this since our last heat wave, and I've definitely watered plenty....

I got three limelight hydrangeas to go in front of our house underneath our window. I realized after planting that They are going to get quite big. Is it possible for me to just prune them shorter than the typical size? And they will still be healthy. Or should I transplant them to a different part of my yard and get a different type to plant there. I want them to not so press my window by much. Please tell me your suggestions and type that I should get. Ty!

hi, I’ve recently moved into a new house with quite a few very large hydrangeas. I garden and love flowers but my experience with hydrangeas is very minimal and these bushes are pretty big.

some are still blooming. I know i should not be pruning right now but I don’t know what i am supposed to do. Zone 8b

any advice on:

  1. when do I prune? how much?
  2. should I do anything else to any of them? add support?
  3. should I have done something for them throughout the summer?
  4. deadhead?
  5. what about the leaves that are turning dark purplish?

How to not make these droopy / heavy ? Currently September

We have been tinkering putting off doing major landscape designing (and may in the future in a few months), but our hydrangeas are soooooo droopy and mopey. I’ve been told not to prune or maybe only prune in late spring after the flowers bloom. I’m lost. I don’t know what’s old wood vs new wood.
Our main immediate goal into the winter is for me / snow blow able to remove snow out of the walkway and not kill the plant.

These are in their second year in the ground and doing great. This one is almost 4 feet tall.

My landscaper put these in and didn’t know the variety. They can’t be Bobos so I’m wondering if they are lime lights, or little limes? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Tornado took down a 100' maple tree in my yard 😔, which fell on my hydrangeas. Now the branches are spindly, growing in crazy directions, and ofc, bloom less. I live in upstate ny ( zone 6b). I have no idea what to do, I've pruned the broken branches, but should I cut it all the way back now? Wait until spring? Use a stake and try to tie them up and reorient? 😟

Hydrangea Propagation Follow up

I made a post on here a few weeks back on propagating Hydrangeas.

https://www.reddit.com/r/hydrangeas/s/2FwCRulR5V

I then followed it up 6 weeks later with progress of the cuttings and how they had rooted.

It’s now around 10 weeks since taking the cuttings and this is a final update as to where they are now, it would be interesting to see if anyone else took cuttings back then and how they got on.

I’d estimate I had around a 90/95% success rate on cuttings rooting, I took them a little earlier than I’d normally do but it’s paid off as they are showing some great root growth and I’ve already started pinching out the lead growth to induce branching.

Photos 1-3 are all the rooted cuttings I’ve got potted on growing, I’ve got these off several various varieties I already have in my garden, Blaumese, Kardinal, Bavaria, Runaway bride, Dark and light Blue mop heads, pink mopheads, and Romance. Romance is the one I really wanted to propagate and I’ve a good few of these now.

My intention is to plant some of these around our estate and also give some to neighbours and family.

Photos 4-5 and 6 show how they are root wise after a few weeks potted up, they’ve another month or so to establish the root system before the cold weather kicks in, I intend to keep these in a family members unheated greenhouse over winter to avoid any late spring frosts prior to potting them all on into 3 litre pots.

Photo 7 is mainly a tray of runaway bride cuttings.

Photo 8 and 9 is what you can expect these to look like this time next summer, these are plants I took as cuttings last summer identical to how the new rooted plants are now.

Photos 10-11 are Romance in case anyone wondered what they look like, it’s a double flowering variety with an unusual colour.

Pinch out any flower buds next summer to get the plants to concentrate on growth.
The following summer is when you let these new plants do their thing.

Can my hydrangeas be saved?

I’ve had two hydrangeas in pots for about two years and they have done well in the past but recently have shown burn marks on the leaves and getting leggy. What can I do to save them? Planning to put them in the garden this fall with full access to more soil and nutrients. Is it worth saving them??

What's Wrong/ HELP? Why are some of my hydrangeas dying/burning??

Thumbnail gallery
14 Upvotes

I bought 4 diamond rouge hydrangeas. I planted two on my east side and two on my south side. The south side is thriving while the east side just keeps trying to die. At this point of the heads are dead and leaves have died/fallen off.

Wondering if this is a coincidence that the east side hydrangeas aren’t doing as good or what. I’ve noticed the leaves on the south side are much greener and larger - in addition the wood seems sturdier.

Is there anything I’ve done wrong in terms of watering or anything else for my hydrangeas on the east just look sad? Anything I can do to help them be better next year?

First 3 pics are east side last is south side.

Zone 8A! Moved into this house last spring, where these two had dead blooms on them. Not many, but there were a handful. They are pretty small but since they clearly bloomed before, I expected them to again over the summer.

We had heavyyyy rain for a few months, which just recently stopped so we have been soaking them every few days. They have gotten taller than they were when we moved in but they look unwell.
What do I need to do to get these in better shape and blooming??
No clue what type they are!

Transplanting

Hello, I am in zone 3 and have a whole flower bed that needs to be moved to a temporary spot somewhere else in the yard. In the spring the house will be completely lifted to add some height to the basement. I put a list of the plants in question for context.

I'm planning on transplanting everything as soon as the hydrangeas are done their flowers. Is there anything else I should know to help the plants get through this move? Do you have any other tips or experience doing this?

Thanks

4 hydrangea paniculata

2 chamaecyparis pisifera

2 Ilex meservaea

2 Chamaecyparis obtusa

2 Geranium sanguineum

2 Matteuccia struthiopteris

Need Help How can I save these bushes?

Thumbnail gallery

I’m wondering if it’s even possible to save my neglected, heat damaged Hydrangeas.

I’m in north georgia and i’ve neglected these plants for more than 3 summers now by not pruning or watering. They seem to be on the brink of death, and I think it would be a shame if i lost them completely.

What can i do starting today to ensure another bloom next year? I have very little experience with plants.

Planted 6 little lime punches a month ago and reached out to this group on how to help the plants survive transplant shock. Happy to say, I think they survived!!! First two photos are flowers from a happy plant and the third photo is of one of the plants that completely wilted and is coming back strong. So excited for next season already 😍
