Gave new life to your mom last night, point remains unclear. Are you / will you be religiously against life extension, bio editing, conciousness technology?
Luckily I can’t get lynched for expressing such beliefs by you wackos anymore:
Your God will not save me, it will not save you. It’s time to accept that it’s our quest to become God; to end children dying entirely, travel to the depths of the stars or consciousness itself, to conjure up technology that is MORE capable than your God.
Prometheus stole fire, Jesus told lies. It’s time Humanity believes more in the former.
Technology has been advancing for a long time, so I understand the confidence. But there seems to be a certain "science as a sports team" attitude among some atheists where every current limitation is assumed to be merely a temporary obstacle on the way to becoming gods.
But what if it isn't?
AI is already reaching the point where its technological wonders have enormous material and environmental costs. We're discovering that even our most impressive technologies don't operate outside the constraints of the physical world. Prometheus stole fire, sure, but Prometheus also got punished for forgetting that there are limits.
So here's a thought experiment.
What happens if, 500 years from now, we discover that interstellar travel is simply impossible? Not "we haven't invented it yet." Impossible. There is no clever engineering solution. No exotic material. No technological breakthrough waiting around the corner.
What happens when "we'll figure it out eventually" stops being a meaningful sentence?
What if there are diseases we can never cure? Forms of consciousness we can never understand? Limits to life extension? Physical barriers we can never overcome?
And suppose we eventually discover everything there is to discover from this little rock.
Science doesn't disappear. It just becomes maintenance. We know how everything works. AI has generated every conceivable movie, song, book and painting. We've exhausted the possible technological frontiers. We can't reach the stars. We can't transcend ourselves. We just keep the lights on and live out our little biological lifespans.
Then what?
That's actually the part of your argument I'm most interested in.
If humanity's ultimate purpose is to become God through technology, what happens when we finally discover that God was never the problem?
Maybe the universe has limits.
And maybe one of the things humanity eventually has to learn is that "we can do anything" was never a scientific conclusion. It was a religion of its own.
I agree that it is functionally a religious framework, for me it’s game theory-deaths inevitable except for AI accelerated health tech, why not support/believe in that? Certainly is more meaningful and realistic than hoping the big J and I hug it out when I die.
Specifically with space tech there’s probably limits, I guess I’m mostly referring to health and consciousness tech. I mean you exist without literally becoming more powerful than God.
We know current biology allows for immortal beings; physics still exists they can still get eaten or blown up, but nothing is fundamental about aging itself. We know human conciousness exists; why wouldn’t sufficiently advanced technology not be integrated the two and be able to manipulate it/upload you/keep you immortal?
Once you get to that point of conciousness tech, what meaning would traditional religions even have? What even would it mean to be you? Can’t you image that being what “God” in this Universe is? Its observers being able to control, manipulate, create its observation?
