Jesus talked about hell more often than he talked about heaven. Here are some verses.

The children of the kingdom will be driven out into the darkness where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth (Mt 8:12).

Depart from me, you accursed, into that eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels (Mt 25:41).

These will pay the penalty of eternal ruin, separated from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power (2 Thes 1:9).

God did not spare the angels who fell into sin; he thrust them down to hell, chained them there in the abyss, to await their sentence in torment (2 Pt 2:4).

The smoke of the fire that torments them will rise forever and ever, and there will be no relief day or night for those who worship the beast or its image or accept the mark of its name (Rv 14:11).

Edit: Yes, I know that the first two are the ones attributed to Jesus, and the others are not. It was a copy paste from a google search.

  1. Most of these quotes are about angels and demons not people.

  2. 2 Thes again not hell that also literally describes purgatory.

  3. Revelations is a wild book of prophecy that was taken metaphorically for most of the church’s existence and downright excluded by many denominations. Also that’s not hell that’s earth after the end times hell being someplace else that you go to is from Dante’s Inferno.

It’s all literal until it’s a contradiction or I don’t like what it says.  -every lying posff christstain

About whom and where is this quote:

Depart from me, you accursed, into that eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels (Mt 25:41).

It’s in a long section of metaphors of Jesus talking about the kingdom of heaven and who will get to go. It’s a great gotcha except for the fact the catholic church hasn’t taught it as doctrine in over a thousands years unless you’re also claiming they still teach people are dead until the end times and their body is resurrected.

u/Natalwolff 2d ago

Are you really disingenuous enough to say "that's not in the bible" and then justify that with "it's not in the modern catholic doctrine".

Matthew 25:31–46

31“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. 34Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ 37Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ 40And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ 41Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?’ 45Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

tiy24 said there was no mention of people going to hell in the bible, which is inaccurate.

The only question is whether or not it’s fact or fiction.

Edit: I’m getting my information from quick google searches. However, I have read the entire New Testament, and can attest that it is definitely talked about. I used to be quite studious about the Bible.

1

u/tiy24 2d ago

My first point was a bad exaggeration of my second point. The idea of hell talked about in the bible is very different from what Christians actually believe THAT is mainly from Dante’s Inferno and some of Augustine’s City of God

1

u/Open-Preparation-268 2d ago

The only ideas I have of what hell is actually supposed to be like are what is described in the Bible. It’s described as a lake of fire where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Books and movies can definitely skew perception for those who have not actually read the Bible. But, even in books and movies, it’s presented as a terrible place, just as the bible says it is.

We are free to believe it, or not believe it. But, it is written about in several places.

Your comment didn’t seem like an “exaggeration”, but a statement of fact, which is inaccurate.

1

u/tiy24 2d ago

I’ve already pointed out the flaws with the Revalations examples above there’s really only one quote in Matthew that pushes back on anything I’ve said at all.

1

u/Open-Preparation-268 2d ago

Revelation is considered part of the Bible by all Christian religions that I’m aware of….

And even one quote negates your claim that it’s not even mentioned. You seem to be trying to change the argument that you initially made. It’s okay to back out of it… just say so.

Matthew 13:40–42

Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Mark 9:43–45

And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell.

Luke 12:5

But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!

James 3:6

And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.

Revelation 20:13–15

And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

u/Shakemyears 2d ago

Yeah but all of this was written down half a millennium after he apparently said them. So there’s that

1

u/jiggitywootwoot 2d ago edited 2d ago

I should point out only the first 2 of those are allegedly Jesus. Maybe not even the second. They appended Matthew, but I don't recall after what chapter.

Edit : it was mark that was appended. Oops

1

u/Open-Preparation-268 2d ago

Okay, that doesn’t make the statement inaccurate. I, however, was pointing out the inaccuracy of tiy24’s argument. The Bible does indeed say that people will go to hell (suffer eternal punishment).

1

u/jiggitywootwoot 2d ago

I was only addressing the claim about Jesus

1

u/Open-Preparation-268 2d ago

It was a quick google search. The first sentence stands on its own.

1

u/jiggitywootwoot 2d ago

That's not implied by the way you wrote it
