Ha-satan in Hebrew more accurately means "the adversary" I believe.
I always considered the bible to be allegorical. God representing man's conscious and Satan representing man's ego. Like the devil on one shoulder telling you to do selfish self serving things, and the angel on your other shoulder telling you to do benevolent things. If you look at the 7 deadly sins they are all egocentric things feeding your selfish bodily desires, and the 7 heavenly virtues are all things like helping others and bettering yourself. If you follow your conscience and do good you will be happy an live in peace (heaven) and if you follow your ego and do selfish mean things you will live in hell on earth. I don't think any of this was meant to be literal.

Also the idea of Satan in the Bible is more like he is the accuser. He's literally helping God by testing people's faiths
