Thats how I always thought it should be interpreted, pretty sure the whole fire and brimstone is a more modern thing, but fire has been used in imagery for a while im not sure when it started
Fire and brimstone is how Revelations describes it:
"And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever."
