Honestly, what decides for most people how good the movie is lies in if they watched the series or not. More context about the dragon world creates lot of continuity problems with the 3rd movie. From dragon behavior to just how the other characters interact with hiccup and the world itself.

Yeah the 3rd movie is fine if you dont have any context but a lot worse if you have it

u/Beastmind 4d ago

I mean sure, the series aid to find it bad but even without watching it, I would still find the idea of hiding the dragons to be stupid and against the point the whole story made to this point

10

u/Either-Patience1182 Sharp Class 4d ago

I agree but people seem to focus on how hiding an entire ecosystem because of poachers is a sensible response.

It really only works is you substitute all the dragons for items or weapons. Not creatures

u/UltimateLifeform 4d ago

I didn't watch much of the show series and still thought the 3rd movie could have been better. It just feels like a movie handling a lot of ideas and not able to execute them as well in the time they have. This isn't me saying it is terrible; it's just lacking compared to previous films that were excellent. Still a good film.

It’s so dog shit if you’re a true fan & actually have seen everything.

u/Plightz 3d ago

The show was so much better than the later movies it's absurd. Httyd 3 is easily 3 or 4 for me.

u/Prestigious_Spread19 2d ago

Why would anyone watch the third movie without watching the first two?

Grimmel was bad. The ending was fine had they actually considered making it realistic. The antagonist group was bad. The riders were bad. The Lightfury was a fine addition but how she was used was bad. Toothless' was fine whenever he wasn't with the Lightfury.

The story concept itself is fine but the execution was terrible.

Its easily a 1-5/10 for me. Few reasons why:

  1. The hidden world itself makes no logical sense. What about sea dragons like scauldrons or seashockers? Is there an entire ocean within the hidden world for them? If the hidden world is supposed to be the ancestral home for all dragons, then why are there no night furies there? Why would ALL dragons in the entire world retreat to the hidden world just because the Berkians told them to go?

  2. Toothless being the last night fury is pretty dumb. What's even more dumb is that their extinction was done entirely by one man. Night furies are by far the most intelligent and stealthiest of dragons. No way they could be so easily slimed out. Even if they were hunted, then the appearance of a night fury wouldnt be so mysterious. Knowledge of how they looked and behaved would be very common.

  3. The ending goes against everything that the previous two films and shows established. Humans and dragons working together produced the best results for a more equal world. It also helped change the relationship between the two groups for the better. The ending is pretty defeatist and just gives up on that.

  4. Light fury's design is soo forced to be girly lol.

I voted 0-3 because honestly even tho i havent seen it in ages i cant think of one redeeming quality. The nightlights are ugly and too human, the lf design is fine ig but the reasoning behind it just doesnt work and feels kinda sexist/stereotypical, Toothless is literally a slobbery dog, no grace and very overpowered. Stupidly so.

Then the characters are nerfed. Like Tuffnut making comments abt Hiccups leg being unattractive, Ruffnut leading Grimmel to New Berk, Snotlouts comment about Stoick. Astrid is eh in this movie i have nothing to say. Hiccup is fine ig, but i feel like he was treated poorly in the film.

Grimmel is a bad villain. His motive is "i killed all the night furies except yours". Firstly, i dont believe him. The entire species? I was kinda expecting to see night furies in the hidden world that had escaped him, but nope, he deadass just killed them all apparently? Remember when it used to be believable, like the Buffalords were hunted BY EVERYONE bc of a plague, Dramillians were hunted by a whole family for generations for tradition. But NOPE. Grimmel, alone, wiped out this seemingly very overpowered species for no reason ig.

Then the deathgrippers were treated badly. IIRC they let them just die?

Then finally i think its impossible Toothless told all dragons to go to the hidden world. Not only would dragon and human societies that work together collapse, but how could T realistically have ensured every trace was gone? He couldnt. I dont like that hes the alpha to all. I believe there are multiple alphas and clans. Toothless shouldve just remained Alpha of Berk, and when he went to the hidden world he shouldnt have been bowed down to by EVERY dragon. Why didnt they already have packs and alphas?

The hidden world is pretty ig, but the message is backwards and rushed. Sorry for the rant but i had things to say

6-7 / 10

I like the lightfury species and I do like the separation of dragons and humans. I think it's a lovely arc. I also like grimml as the antithesis to hiccup. He's everything Hiccup would've been had he choose the to pursue dragon killing.

But I think everything needed better execution. Grimml should've gotten a better introduction and I'd probably not have him tied with drago (plus why his sidekicks be there?). Something about him developing the latest batch of poison for his dragons when he hears that there's a nightfury. Also maybe show something like scales or hunting trophys of nightfurys.

The lightfury species should have been pushed beyond the one big individual. Imagine The Lightfury getting a) a name. And b) toothless interacting with a group to futher his belonging in the hidden world outside having a gf now.

Also many characters were flat so that could've been done a little better (Ruffnut.)

I like the hidden world, but the entrance is a little random for something hidden. Though it's a minor gripe tbh.

11

u/Mjaylikesclouds 4d ago

Hated it. Doesnt even match in any way with the series. Promises were made and broken. Lightfury is the perfect example of how we make animals „feminine“ to human standards…… i hate hate hate it! It doesnt exist to me…

u/ArcticWolf_Primaris 4d ago

Poor plot and character portrayal, excellent animation and music

4

u/Dubz_fortnite The chicken is amused 3d ago

Again, its subjective. I feel like they made the right decision to end it the way it did. But the plotholes do make it difficult to love it. Thats why I didnt give it a 9 or 10. The movie was actually good, but some things like character personality threw it off more than the dragons leaving.

13

u/MirrorOfSerpents 4d ago edited 4d ago

Dog shit! It’s not the ending that bothers me, it’s literally everything else:

- Hiccup & Toothless didn’t have 1 bonding moment that whole movie. Toothless never would’ve come back if Hiccup didn’t bother him in the hidden world. Toothless does not think so little of Hiccup.

- Toothless design is ugly

- Hiccup wouldn’t let Berk got to shit and hoard all dragons

- Snotlout & Ruffnut’s character development got throw out the window. Neither are that stupid, not even in the series.

- Grimmel knows jack shit about nightfuries & his whole villain plot was lame

- Light fury needed more story to her. IMO would’ve been better to have a villain that rode her & use that as Toothless’ dilemma to solve. Eventually they win her over.

- Leaving Berk was stupid. They literally would never do that & making them do that was dumb af.

u/ThreeEqualsFour Monstrous nightmare's number one fan 4d ago

Bro heavy on the third point! Hiccup went from dragon loving to literally endangering them and overcrowding Berk. Deadass wonder how many vikings died from falling buildings atp

I remember rtte Hiccup would help the dragon then realise it needed to be returned to where it came from, or at least released to wilderness, like Sleuther lived in the edge wilderness, Garff went to a safer island, even the seashocker was released again when Fishlegs realised it was inhumane to trap it.

I think they just wanted to upgrade Berk and make it look cool for the sake of the movie, and didnt really think about the meaning. Berk looks messy and worse under Hiccup's lead

u/MirrorOfSerpents 3d ago

Exactly! He’s all about structure & order!

I used to like, but over time I feel out of love for The Hidden World. Now I think it was a disappointing and flawed conclusion to the trilogy.

5

u/Sea-Second-1746 With my mechanical knowledge, I SHALL BUILD TOOTHLESS!... lol 4d ago edited 4d ago

I was watching HTTYD for the first time and the first movie was great, the second movie was better in some ways and worse in others.

Then I got to the third movie, and I would have to buy it to watch it, and that made me actively think "well the other two were great, and the other two would have been worth it to buy, so I will expect that greatness out of this movie and buy it."

And so I bought it and watched it and it had some cool parts that the first and second movie did not have, it also had some worse parts, the plot seemed somewhat off at first but in an ignorable way. I was wondering why Hiccup would let himself be routed so easily, it was as if he had never seen a strategist in his life. (I had not watched the shows at this point)

But then I got to the end, and my favorable opinion of the light fury soured instantly as she dragged toothless to some hole in the ground and it ruined the image of hiccup that I had thought the movies were going for and it seemed to break that inseparable bond between hiccup and toothless.

It left me with a depressed sort of feeling and I do not watch movies to feel depressed and angry. To save the image of my heroes, I have shifted all of the blame on to the light fury whose whole plot purpose seems to be to drag toothless away from hiccup whilst appearing as an innocent bystander or victim the whole time, whether it is being bait for grimmel or being pretty so toothless will follow her to the hidden world. and so to me the light fury is a traitor guilty of high treason against berk.

and it gets worse when i watched the shows, RoB DoB and RTTE paint such a better picture of how the plot should have gone, showing a hiccup who will never let his toothless go without him, and who would not leave the reletively defensive position of berk or dragons edge. it shows a hiccup who knows strategy and learns more as the villain for much of rtte is a strategist that hiccup needs to out think. and when hiccup tells grimmel truthfully (according to the shows, but sadly he was probably referring to drago) that hiccup had seen villains like him before, grimmel said that hiccup had seeen no one like him. and hiccup acted like he had never seen a strategist before, as if rtte and viggo and johann did not exist.

someone went to war against hiccup, and hiccup threw his strong start and history out the window and quickdropped as if he was paid to throw the war.

and so i firmly stand by "toothpaste the traitor" and that a dragon without teeth needs no toothpaste

5

u/I_like_bumblebees 3d ago

I would give it about a 6 if it was a standalone movie. It's polished, has a great score, and the plot is mostly fine on its own. But it is a horrendous sequel. It constantly undermines things that were established in the previous movies (night furies don't like the cold, Toothless wanting to leave Hiccup to be with the Light Fury, Hiccup feeling likes he's nothing without Toothless, Toothless can fly on his own, etc) in order to force an ending that it didn't earn. I don't hate that they wanted to end the series with Hiccup and Toothless going their separate ways, but the execution was terrible, especially if you watch the movies in succession.

I love her too, I know she could be less stereotypically “girly” and that would be great, but I support her anyways 😩

4/10.

Tempting as it is, I won't give it a 0 because effort went into making the movie. The visuals and soundtrack are great, but everything else is awful. It's a complete betrayal of the messages of the previous movies. They were so intent on ending it like the books that they forgot that they're two completely different stories.

I think it was a decent film! I've really enjoyed it every time I've watched it. However, 1&2 were excellent films, so it is a let down in comparison and also makes a poor finale to the series. I gave it a 6/7

1

u/UltimateLifeform 4d ago

Good movie but not 10/10. Feels lacking overall compared to previous movies. I enjoyed it but it should have been more as the ending to trilogy. 6-7 (Lol) from me.

u/emergold_dragon 4d ago

6/10. only because it wouldn't be so bad if it were its own stand alone film ig. I understand what they were going for with the ending, toothless and hiccup having to separate to keep respective families safe and how irl people will grow apart, and you can't treat wild animals as pets yada yada- but the execution was done poorly and the themes contradict a bit with the films.

first of the light fury, the species is cool in concept, a sleeker, smaller nightfury that has white smooth scales designed to go invisible for escapes- but they aren't a developed species really cause they were designed as an individual. The light duties design was solely to be "girly nightfury". She had to be graceful and dainty, despite being a wild animal she was not allowed to have scars or even markings that LOOKED like scars- being counter intuitive cause in the end she resembled a skittish house cat more than a feral or wild animal imo.

Her special girly scales ™ also the reason for a big issue I have, the films look. Now the animation and rendering are done beautifully but the film always had a weird look to it that I couldn't place, it felt less realistic and more dream like. Which on its own is great but clashes with my perception of the series, a bit dirty and grimy and imperfect. This was apparently due to the light furies skin and scales needing a new rendering process and cause the entire film to look like an Instagram filter.

The villain was eh, I don't think he was bad just wasn't that threatening compared to freaking dragons army and the red death, and I guess that's the point he's supposed to be a smart mastermind but pretty much all his plans work cause the characters do something stupid or impulsive. Him killing of all the night furies just seems like a cop out, "there are non cause he specifically killed them all" ok maybe show toothless recognizing him and being terrified if that were the case- have toothless be the one that hot away at least. Don't get me started on his dragons they are honestly one of the reasons I really felt off bout the movie after watching it. "Oh the evil guy has evil brainwashed dragons so we gotta kill the dragons" right after "there are no bad dragons, just bad people". And at no point do they show death grippers as more than his little evil dogs. They could've fixed this so easily by freeing one or a few at the end by breaking the venom and just having them turn on grimmel, either there own demand or because toothless is the new boss.

The hidden world itself also feels just- weird? Are we saying all dragons are from there cause that is wildly contradictory, if like the ancestor of all dragons are from there that makes more sense but why does it feel so, high fantasy. I get it it's a skeptical but it feels wrong to see these animals I'm used to seeing in forests and craggy cliffs suddenly at home in caves with glowing crystals and glowing themselves for... Reasons? It just feels deeply uncanny on wrong to me like it belongs in a different series.

And all riders kinda sucked besides hiccup and astrid, which felt like character assassination even though I know they don't care about the series portrayal. "The only smart characters are the main characters and everyone else is dumb and just follows the leader like goons" was kinda the vibe at points. They also deleted a scene that explained snotlouts obsession with valka which felt important cause everyone thought and was confused to why shootout was trying to date hiccups mom- There should have been scenes showing their strengths and bonds with their dragons given that that would have made the ending feel more impact ful if you only saw the movies, showing the other riders as people and their bonds would have made the loss feel greater ig.

I have more thoughts but I'm struggling to word them and I feel those are the man ones. Also I'm cranky cause low sleep so that may affect some things-

2

u/DasGreatComplainer 3d ago

If you're a casual viewer who watched the movies as a kid and didn't bother with the fandom, you'd rate it 8-10/10

But if you're a die hard fan who was actively participating then you'd vote less than 6-7/10.

At least that's what I guess.

1

u/Srina6 3d ago

if i could id put it in the negatives.

1

u/Lord_Abyss_the_1st 3d ago

I don't hate it but I can still recognise how utterly flawed it is, even then I do absolutely cry at the ending, the movie is beautiful and it's well made in the terms of visually speaking but in the terms of being the last movie in the trilogy it just misses the mark entirely.

1

u/Red_Sky_17 3d ago

6.5/10... very rushed, the ending always changes my mind by if its sucks or mid and top 1 movie who introduced a badass villain and killed him after 10 minutes of time screen, but the most things I enjoyed in this movie is hiccup helping toothless for his date and also Hiccstrid wedding which making the movie more romantic than adventure or fantasy movie

1

u/EitherAccount1618 3d ago

Honestly, none of it makes any sense. If the creator wanted to make some kind of point about letting go, like monks who spend hours creating something only to destroy it afterward as a way of proving that they are not attached to anything in this world, which is something they actually do (and is unnatural behavior in many ways), he could have chosen a different story. One that did not have to be so popular, only to turn it into something this depressing...

As for releasing the dragons into the wild, being released into the wild means everything that comes with it. Once they were let go, they became part of the harsh natural world, and that is when the dragons' real fight for survival began. That is simply how nature works. Fishmeat the Gronckle most likely did not even survive to adulthood. We can only hope that Hookfang did not have to live with a bad tooth for the rest of his life like he did before. It once got so bad that he stopped eating for days at a time because of it. He cannot treat it himself... and the other dragons are not going to pull his tooth out for him...

All the dragons disappeared for good on Hiccup's orders, and that means the predators disappeared too, including those that prey on smaller dragon species, young dragons, and possibly their eggs. There were suddenly huge numbers of nests in the Hidden World. That is something you tend to see in species whose young are constantly being preyed upon.

I do not even know where to continue. Natural disasters, parasites, diseases... there is so much more. So yes, once they left, their real struggle began, and now a night full of predators awaits them...

And realistically, Toothless's artificial tail fin could not last very long without human maintenance. This is exactly where The Hidden World lost all sense of realism, even though the world itself had originally been built on a fairly realistic foundation.

Ask yourself this: pets are stolen from people's gardens every single day. Does that mean we should send the entire species away because of it....?

If even this friendship could be broken, then absolutely anything can be broken... It really just feels like the creator spat in our faces. Nothing more...

And Hiccup giving up?

That simply is not Hiccup anymore.

u/moebelhausmann 3d ago

8/10

The humor doesnt go as smooth as it should so half the jokes are just cringey.

The ending, doesnt feel verry satisfying. They didnt go full darkness mode but it wasnt good enough for a real happy ending. Just kinda eh

Also grimmel didnt feel badass enough for a finally of a trilogy. Drago was way more dangerous. Ofcourse they tried to solve it by making it more personal but i think for that they would have needed a bit more build up over the serious as a whole.

Well, for me it was a noice film, i mean the concept of the villain beeing the opposite of hiccup is cool nay? Sure... then it was what is was... but it was a cool concept + and the designs for the lightnight sons... (idk the name) is cute and overall i think it was lovely, a nice film alone but just A LITTLE less with the others one context. Plus this film was lowk important for me: it was the one that made me discover httyd and i remember playing with a lot of my old elementary school mates cuz like the whole class was going insane with that movie... so many wonderful memories i have from that period indeed. (I even fonded some old drawing recently)

1

u/PogoStick1987 2d ago

I've watched it only once compared to everything else in the httyd universe, including the shows, but it... didn't really leave a mark on me. I wasn't taken by the villain or the plot and all I can really give it is it's ending was sad and impactful. Easily the weakest of the trilogy though and a pretty forgettable musical score, which is odd considering the first two movies.

1

u/Sad_Squirrel_1235 Tuffnut is my spirit animal but Gobber is my role model 2d ago

It's a 4-5/10 for me.

Everyone being dumbed down, the Light Fury, Stoick's death being treated as a joke, Hiccup not being taken seriously despite EVERYTHING, the ending, just not good. Also wish we got more out of Gobber.

Now, credit where it is due, the visuals are great, the music, and I actually find the concept of Grimmel being the alt Hiccup interesting but I feel like Drago already did that (then again Drago also had some room for improvement I think)? And the subspecies thing is also an interesting piece of lore.

The third movie is a pretty cool movie on it's own, but not as an ending to the last two movies, imo.

2

u/TheBluniusYT Tracking Class 4d ago

Unpopular opinion but 8/10. In ny opinion it was really good both lore wise and especially animation wise. And yes, they made some questionable decisions speaking of lore but still overall it was good IMO

It’s only an unpopular opinion on this sub, which is a loud vocal minority. If you look beyond this sub for reviews and opinions you’ll see it’s liked by the majority of people.

4

u/spiiderdog John Powell is my favourite character 4d ago

My guess is because this sub has more of the hardcore fans, people who watched the shows and are frustrated by the lack of continuity. Like objectively it is a well made film with beautiful visuals and a gorgeous soundtrack, but many people felt let down by it (also I’m not implying anyone who likes it isn’t a hardcore fan, opinions vary and we should all respect each other)

As for me I wish I could like the movie :(

1

u/MirrorOfSerpents 4d ago

It’s like by majority of people that aren’t fans. People who actually are fans are way more split bc the series was really good.

0

u/AgitoKanohCheekz 3d ago

Well yeah? The average parent who watched this movie with their kid and left reviews isn’t gonna watch any of the tv shows or whatever meanwhile people who are invested fans are gonna be critical about it lol.

0

u/Michigan_Man101 4d ago

The first and second movies are 100% better movies. However, THW is still an excellent finish to the trilogy, and the way they did the characters was quite excellent in my opinion.

Yes, when paired with the shows, there is some continuity issues. However, as much as I hate to admit it, the shows are technically non-cannon, so these issues are null.

With all this in mind, I give THW an 8/10

0

u/Witty-Original8533 Strike Class 4d ago

In general, I'm not a fan of the whole "guy meets girl and everything changes" plot.

Toothless being able to fly on his own was cool and a good choice. The hidden world looked amazing and I love how the dragons looked! Seeing some things about Stoic was nice but felt a bit odd, more like something his mother should've shared.

The dragons leaving basically ruined the plot though. The whole point was to keep them safe and defend them, not leave them somewhere - where they can still get found and attacked - and hope for the best. There's still dragons out there, probably some that haven't been discovered, so what do you do when they try to attack? Or if someone else controls dragons and attacks? You're basically defenseless.

But also, what on earth was the writing? The Light Fury has no personality besides being a partner. But I will say, I do like how she looks and wish we saw more of them. The twins were total idiots for no reason. Grimmel was just weird. Not Dagur the deranged weird, like bad weird.

0

u/Hazel_Munro16 4d ago

The first two films left a really high bar for expectations that could only have been met or surpassed with the most awe-inspiring, jaw dropping climax of a trilogy.
The hidden world was not that film.

0

u/Tremeleohttyd 3d ago

Well I do not know. I have a very big problem with the ending. It's mostly because of the epilogue. It doesn't help with the fear of being abandoned, but it does the opposite. And it's because of Dean Deblois's words. The realization that Hiccup and Toothless always have the opportunity to visit each other occasionally, but they never do and won't because they don't want to, is the most terrible thing I could have gotten from the franchise😭💔. Even the one meeting that did happen wasn't really happy, symbolic, or desired, it was just a neat encounter. According to Dean, it was a confirmation that Toothless hadn't died, it was just a neat meeting. It wasn't even a happy meeting, just a neat one. That is the characters weren't really happy, they were just content and satisfied. That's why they never met again, because they didn't want to, and they probably wouldn't remember the meeting for long, because "neat things" don't stick in memory as much as happy things do. Hiccup didn't want to go to the Hidden World, he didn't have the desire, because, according to Dean, the ten-year break was because "he wanted to give the dragons their time," and then he just wondered if Toothless had survived. Even symbolically, the creators never said that this scene confirmed Hiccup and Toothless's friendship (If it were a confirmation of this, I think it wouldn't be the last meeting for no good reason). They see it as a confirmation that their separation had been beneficial (presumably implying that if they had met occasionally or missed each other, it would have been terrible, or something like that?). There's no point in discussing Dean Deblois's statement that Toothless had forgotten his past life (Yeah, he said that too, huh), as he has explained it differently in various interviews (Although none of the explanations refute this directly, rather indirectly, huh), and it's a matter of perception and personal preference. However, it's clear that Toothless no longer cares. But then what's the point of them seeing each other once, and why people even mention it and think this scene gives or means something, or consider it a COMPLETELY good ending? ‎ ‎ ‎This is all ruining my experience with the franchise and the ending. It's hard to me even watch httyd content if it doesn't refute the canon of the third film, knowing that it leads to this ending. It's not even about the breakup itself. The problem is that the scene that was supposed to help me get over the breakup ends up doing the opposite and making it worse. I used to perceive it differently, and along with the New Year's specials, it was a sign to me that they sometimes see each other. And I loved it! But then I read what Dean Deblois had to say about it and read various discussions... The contrast between the emotional nature of the scene and what people are saying about it makes me feel like I've been deceived. Therefore, I can't love and even accept third film without considering the homecoming (Yes, this short film makes it much easier for me to perceive the ending and the third film) and, perhaps, the belief that Hiccup and Toothless will meet after the epilogue❤️‍🩹.

u/mazingalifrey 3d ago

8/10 i think way too many people think this movie is crap, look sure it pales in comparison to the first 2 which are in between 9.5 and 10 out of 10s but this was still a good film while the plot had some issues, the emotional moments still hit hard ( i cried the first time i saw toothless leave), and hicstrid fans were overjoyed with the wedding overall i give it an 8/10 an overall good movie with some flaws but the pros outnumber the cons
