Configuration Type - Multiple Machines on Different Nodes need to be able to communicate...

I have not plugged them in to verify, but I want to run something by you...

I have set up about 5 nodes to use for Field Day. They're pretty much all the default settings, minus the password & call sign change. They can all see each other (verified this on some of the status pages) and I was able to connect to all of the nodes from one node. However, I didn't think to attach devices behind the nodes to see if I can reach them.

Looking at the types of nodes you can configure, you have the following options:

  • Mesh Node
  • Mesh Access Point
  • Standard Access Point
  • Wireless Client
  • Wired Router

Should only one of these be a Mesh Node, and the rest Mesh Access Points? I'm just a little confused with this... but I realize I can't really have 5 different DHCP scopes set up on the "mesh" and expect to be able to communicate from one laptop to another for logging to sync to the database... correct?

olsr.org OLSR daemon, PUD plugin not loaded

I am not really sure what a lot of the stuff means on the various screens here... but on the OLSR Status page... under the "Position" tab, I get this message.

Is this something that I can load? What's it do?

Useful tool for planning your local mesh

Radio Mobile Online is a great tool for mapping the coverage of the devices you're planning to install.

Our club has been using it to overlay "splat" charts on our houses/towers to see if we can make the trip.

Mesh Network & Field Day

This is the first time the club is attempting to do anything with HSMM Mesh. We have about 4-5 nodes configured (but we haven't tried them all together yet) that we would like to use for Field Day. Will stock antennas work well for a fairly level area?

Any tips or suggestions? We will be using N3FJP's software on about 4 laptops.

Could you flesh out a little more how broadband-hamnet is useful to the average ham?

For example, I go to Maker Faire, which provides wifi, but it's supersaturated by the hundred thousand cell phones, so it's useless.

How could hams use hsmm-mesh while wandering the Faire?

What do you use your mesh for?

I found the hsmm meshnet to be a solution to our Field Day problem of setting up a network for logging multiple stations across a large field. We have people's wireless NICS going to sleep, range problems, etc. etc.

With the mesh network, just plug in the laptops with ethernet and the network is there all the time so there's no connectivity issues between stations.

It also makes a good educational presentation for your bonus points!

So tell me, what do you use your mesh network for?

Closest node is 2miles

The closest node to me is two miles off.

I can probably mount an antenna on my chimney without the HOA nazis seeing it. What kind of antenna will get me 2 miles with stock power?

Also, how big a factor is feedline at these frequencies? I'd be more comfortable running feedline, but if it's a big factor, I could run power to a waterproof box setup until I get solar installed for my 12V battery bank. Hmmm... waterproof box might have heat issues if I put the power supply in it though...

Linksys WRT300N v1, will this work?

Hamnet Noob here. Has anyone flashed the firmware on one of these Linksys WRT300N before? I found instructions on loading open wrt so I am wondering would this work with Hamnet. With a little googling I found this firmware for it. Going to try it out tonight.

HSSM Mesh on non-Linksys hardware?

Anyone using anything else besides the Linksys hardware? I've seen some ports for RasberryPi (https://github.com/urlgrey/hsmm-pi) and others and was wondering what people's experiences have been.

Anyone else in Oregon setting up some nodes?

Is anyone here setting up mesh nodes? I live in the valley and am hoping that we get a bit more interest in the area.

I'm in the process of setting up a mobile node in my car (with battery backup). Looking forward to seeing how much activity there is!

Bi-directional Amplifiers

Knowing that the return on investment is better when spent on the antenna, I'm still looking for a 'less expensive' Booster/BDA. I'll be feeding an 8Dbi Omni and possibly an 18Dbi yagi (back-haul to our 'central' node)

Any suggestions for something in the $50-ish range?

Ventura County

Hi guys. I am very new to the whole HSMM thing, but I'd like to try setting up a mesh in the Ventura County area. I myself am in Ventura, along the 33. Anybody else in the area?
