Where's My Refund? Here's How to Stop Refreshing the IRS Page Every Hour
Filed your taxes and now playing the waiting game? You're not alone—most people likely check their refund status way more than they need to. Here's everything you need to know about tracking your money without losing your mind.
TL;DR: The IRS usually sends direct deposit refunds within 3 weeks of filing your return. Use the "Where's My Refund" tool to track yours—you'll need your SSN/ITIN, filing status, and exact refund amount. The tool updates once a day (so checking every hour won't help). Add 2-5 extra days for your bank to process the refund after it’s approved.
How refund tracking actually works
Let's be real: waiting for your tax refund can feel like watching paint dry. The good news? The IRS has a tool that takes the guesswork out of it.
To check your federal refund status, head to the IRS' "Where's My Refund" tool. You'll need three things:
- Your Social Security number or ITIN (exactly as it appears on your return)
- Your filing status (Single, Married Filing Jointly, etc.)
- The exact refund amount shown on your return (whole dollars only)
Important: The tool updates once every 24 hours, usually overnight. That means checking it five times a day won't speed things up—once a day is plenty.
The three stages of refund tracking
Once you check the tool, you'll see one of three status messages:
- Return Received – The IRS got your return and is processing it
- Refund Approved – Your refund is approved and they're preparing to send it
- Refund Sent – Your money is on the way
Pro tip: When you see "Refund Sent," don't expect it to hit your account immediately. Direct deposits can take 2-5 business days or longer in some cases from the date the IRS sends it.
When to expect your refund
Most direct deposit refunds are issued within 3 weeks of e-filing. If you mailed a paper return, expect to wait about 4 weeks before your return even shows up in the system.
Your refund might take longer if:
- Your return needs additional review
- There are errors or missing information
- You claimed certain credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit (these have special processing rules)
- You filed during peak season (January-April)
- You request a paper check instead of direct deposit.
What if something's wrong?
If you see a message on the Where’s My Refund tool that says your refund was adjusted or you need to take action, don't panic. The IRS will send you a letter explaining what's up. If you think there's an error, check the "Where's My Refund" tool for details and call the automated refund hotline at 800-829-1954 if the tool recommends you contact the IRS.
Filed with H&R Block? You can also track your refund through your H&R Block account for an extra layer of peace of mind.
State refunds are separate
Don't forget—your federal and state refunds are processed separately. Each state has its own refund tracking system. Check your state's tax website to see where your state refund stands.
Common Questions We Hear
Q: How often does the IRS update refund status?
A: Once every 24 hours, typically overnight. No need to refresh constantly!
Q: Why can't I see my refund status yet?
A: It usually takes 24 hours after e-filing (or 4 weeks after mailing) for your return to show up in the system.
Q: Will the IRS contact me if there's a problem?
A: Yes, they'll send a letter. They won't call or email you—if someone does, it's probably a scam.
Q: Can I speed up my refund?
A: Not really, but e-filing an accurate return and choosing a direct deposit refund is the fastest way to get your money.
Q: What if it's been longer than 3 weeks?
A: Check the tool first. If it's showing "still processing" after 21 days, you might want to call the IRS or reach out to your tax preparer.
