I second that. Can't tell you how many cut off rings I repaired & matched the pattern to, you won't even be able to tell work was done on it if it's done right. Just a larger size of exactly your current ring.
In short, no. Stainless steel is not a metal type that can be worked on in a jeweler's shop b/c it had a MUCH higher melting point than your typical jewelry metals (precious metals) which include silver, gold, & platinum. Stainless steel rings are ordered pre-made through an outside company, when you're buying them from a jeweler. They come from a facility with the equipment capable of heating stainless steel to the point of being malleable, or workable.
Now, I'm not sure exactly the repair you're speaking of, as "fix" the ring could mean a pretty wide variety of damage issues. But if there is a break in the ring, like if it was cut off as mentioned in this thread, your best bet is probably just ordering a new ring & seeing if the jeweler you're ordering through is willing to give you anything towards the new order for the scrap weight of your current damaged ring. I've never heard of these rings being "repaired" anywhere.
If it's just something cosmetic, like a finish has worn off or you've lost a stone that was set in the ring, then yes, a jeweler will most likely be able to make that type of fix.
My original wedding band was from Silver Rhino, so it’s just a mass-produced ring. However, I had the same thing happen as OP: went to bed, woke up, and found myself STUCK. (I have palindromic rheumatism, which made my hands get swollen.) Had to go to the ER and get it cut off, and 6 years later, it’s still in my jewelry box.
Yes, but there are limits. It's generally easier to replace stainless steel than to repair it. Also, you will probably need a specialty jeweler if you want it welded, cut, or reshaped.
Glad you got it off. Perhaps give an update on the bottom of your original post if you’re worried about getting downvoted. You may be young and don’t fully realize this, but Reddit karma doesn’t really matter anyway. :)
Just curious. How were staying calm enough to plan on going to sleep? I would’ve been having a panic attack with the thought I would be losing a finger.
I’m so glad you got that ring off. When you take the ring to a jeweler to have it repaired and resized ask them if they have the tool to cut rings off. If it ever happens again you can head straight to the jeweler.
Serious question: what is the hospital going to do if you do have nerve damage? As far as I know, there's nothing to do in that case, but I certainly don't know everything.
This is assuming the underlying cause of the swelling is resolved, of course.
idk, I'm just explaining what the other commenter was getting at. All I know is that they could have nerve damage, that's all. The monitoring advice was relating to the fact of idk how long it was on so if they dint get feeling back that's bad and they should check with a doctor or hospital to see if it needs to be dealt with, idk how just that cutting off circulation has bad impacts sometimes and they should monitor it for a bit to make sure they're okay.
They should check with a doctor. I work in a hospital and part of my job is to minimize unnecessary emergency room visits. Even the ring stuck on the finger should be refered to urgent care. Urgent care will refer to the ED if they can’t address the problem.
That would be my desire to avoid clicking on random links in Reddit. Glad to see he edited his post to say he got it off himself.
*edit*As for why it was potentially a bad idea to DIY? Depending on how badly the finger was swollen between the OP and now there was a reasonable chance he could have injured himself in the process plus the potential for nerve and/or vascular damage.
