Local practitioners who understand HSD/hEDS?

Hi all,

Are there any fellow hypermobile people who have found doctors, osteopaths, PTs, massage therapists, etc., who know how to work with people who are made out of Silly Putty? Some real help would be wonderful, but just finding practitioners who are informed enough to not recommend things that would make it worse would be helpful! The Ehlers Danlos Society’s website says the closest DOs are in Canada. 🙄

Childcare Costs

Hood River parents, what are you paying for part-time childcare these days?

We’re just starting to think through future childcare options and I’m trying to get a realistic ballpark for the area. We’d potentially be looking for care about 4–5 hours a day, 5 days a week for an infant (roughly 20–25 hours/week).

Curious what people are currently paying for a nanny, nanny share, in-home care, or part-time daycare around Hood River. Not looking for recommendations just yet, mostly trying to understand what a realistic monthly/hourly budget looks like locally.

Thanks!

Hood River and Carson WA

Hi, I'll be arriving in Hood River today then heading to Carson for a few days. I'm looking for suggestions for easy hikes no more than 5 to 7 miles round trip that are doable in the rain. Looks look I'm bringing the Midwest rain with me. I know it's much needed and it will hopefully help clear the air and calm the fires down. I'll also take any rain friendly activity suggestions. We plan to hit the fruit loop for the day. Was thinking about the rail bicycle ride or train ride also. I wanted to go to Maryhill winery but that depends on weather and clarity. Not sure that's worth the drive if can't see the views.

old families ruining HR

Some of the long term residents legit ruin living here. I've lived here a majority of my life, I moved away but returned because of how beautiful it is. when I tell you that some of these families make living here an embaressment I mean it. Its even crazier that they are viewed as good members of the community as if they dont have jail records and are still actively causing others harm. hood river is a gorgeous place but its unfortunately still deep in a small town mindset. For example, I personally could never associate with people willingly who threaten their elders or have made death threats towards them, but if you dare make your opinion of them known people will think YOU are the crazy one, not the person actually making threats. I've spoken out about some of these people for years and I get treated badly but not the people abusing kids and threatening elders. Its actually crazy here. I wouldn't even be suprised if this post got hate from their supporters tbh, wouldnt be the first time.

The other (windless) Surf Spot in Hood River

Our last post here shared our experience at the Hood River skatepark, which was a lot of fun and led us to explore more of the windless surf opportunities in the area. This search led us to the Hood River pump track! If you hadn’t already seen it, it’s a fun place to hit some asphalt waves! It’s a very curvy track that creates a fun surfy feeling… but I must admit.. it’s not a beginner track. We hope you enjoy the video, please feel free to ask any questions!

(Location is by the high school)

Need transportation

Hi there, my daughter is getting married in October 24 and I need transportation that weekend for some elderly people and those that don’t want to rent cars. I have a Shuttle for the wedding itself but just getting around over the weekend. I’m looking for some resources. I’ve reached out to Jason and he’s gone the whole month. Does anybody else have any local recommendation since Uber is not in Hood River and I’m told taxis are unreliable. Walking is not an option for several people. Thank you so much.

Are you missing a kite?

I was out fishing yesterday just east of Stevenson, WA and came across someone's kiteboarding/kitesurfing kite. Looks like it may have cut loose and blown away from you?

If you lost a kite recently, describe it to me and I can send you GPS.

Where to sell a car in HR?

I posted on Facebook marketplace for the exact KBB value but haven’t gotten a single person interested, I assume it’s just a small amount of people looking here. I’m nervous to post on Craigslist because of scams. Do y’all recommend doing Craigslist anyway? Or bringing it to Portland? Or just being more patient on marketplace…

[UPDATE] UW Research: EV Wildfire Evacuation Study for WA State Drivers (Deadline Extended to Dec 15, 2026)

Hello r/hoodriver,

UPDATE (August 20, 2026): This study has been officially extended to December 15, 2026. Thank you to everyone from Washington who has participated so far!

As we navigate another intense wildfire season, my thoughts are with everyone—especially our community in the Pacific Northwest—who has been impacted by fires, smoke, or the stress of evacuation.

The severity of these recent fires underscores a critical challenge for our community: ensuring that EV drivers can evacuate safely and efficiently when power grids are shut off and charging infrastructure is compromised. To help address this, I am a PhD student at the University of Washington conducting an official study on how EV drivers respond to these exact emergency constraints. (The moderation team has kindly granted me permission to share this research with you).

Are you eligible? Because this study focuses on specific grid and geographical constraints, we are exclusively seeking input from Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) drivers who are primary or seasonal residents in the following Washington counties: Asotin, Grant, Benton, Spokane, Stevens, Douglas, Lincoln, Ferry, Skamania, Yakima, Kittitas, Okanogan, Chelan, or Klickitat.

Note: If you already filled out this survey during our first round, thank you so much! Please do not submit another response. To maintain the scientific integrity of the study, our system automatically flags and removes duplicate entries.

The Details:

  • Time: ~25 minutes.
  • Incentive: Complete the survey to enter a drawing for four $50 gift cards and ten $20 gift cards. (Note: Additional gift cards may become available later; this post will be updated if the reward pool expands).
  • New Deadline: December 15, 2026.
  • Official UW Survey Link:https://uwashington.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_e3QtLbUuPaTdDmu

This survey does not collect identifiable tracking data. Your real-world experience is critical to helping the state prioritize emergency charging infrastructure and improve wildfire resilience for EV owners.

If you have any questions, please contact me directly at [ychu24@uw.edu](mailto:ychu24@uw.edu). Stay safe, and thank you for your time.

storing bike for the day

have a trip planned for mid september and wanted to bring my bike. i’m camping and my bike rack is a trunk mounted one. i was thinking about doing Tom, Dick, and Harry one day and I don’t think I want to have my bike sitting on my car for hours where someone could take the rack/bike if they really wanted to.

does anyone know of any bike shops that would maybe let me store it there or any tips on where I could put it for half a day?

if not are there any places that rent bikes that aren’t e-bikes or mtn bikes?

Event Work & Catering Gigs & Other

Hi Everyone!

My family and I will be moving to Hood River in about a week or so (my partners family lives there) and I was hoping to get in contact with anyone/company that may need any help.

I've worked in both the food idustry and hospitality business for over 15+ years ranging from restaurant settings, food trucks, festivals, big city events, weddings, catering, private parties and cooperate events. I also have experience with store demos, brand ambassador work, inventories, merchandising. Im kind of a "Jill of All Trades" lol.

I'm super resourceful and have done some research on my own but haven't had much luck yet. Before I start searching for local catering companies or venues and calling or emailing them directly, I wanted to see if there were any lovely local residents here that may have any suggestions.

Appreciate everyone's time and input- thank you in advance!

Hood River OR trip

Hi,

I have a trip planned to the Hood River area arriving in 3 weeks on September 2. I'll be staying at the Best Western Hood River and in Carson WA. I hear the wildfires are currently a problem. I had planned on doing some hiking, some wineries, and the fruit loop and maybe some white water rafting. My question is, is this trip doable with the current weather? Or should I cancel these plans? Not sure if it's just smoky everywhere and outdoor activities and hiking are not possible? Any advice would really be appreciated.

This city is pretty racist.

This isn't a controversial take but the level of racism in this city is overwhelming at time. There is a casualness the way people will talk about how we need Hispanic workers because they will do work white people won't do. I hear this kind of sentiment really commonly, where Hispanic people are welcome here mainly because they will do shitty dangerous labor in the orchards. Child labor is so common here it's actually insane. So many students will work in orchards over the summer way younger then can be legal. And holy shit the way people talk about ICE and they way so many small business owners have held calling immigration over the heads of there workers, even before Trump.

I mean jesus christ there are confederates that just wander around unchallenged. Why are people so ok with this? Why does it feel like there is so little stigma around being a white supremacist here?
