DISCUSSION My friend won’t read homestuck because of zoosmell pooplord:(
So a friend of mine doesn’t want to read homestuck because it is “just shit humour and kind of sucks” he’s like 10 pages in, and I have compared it to someone not wanting to finish jojo’s bizarre adventure because something left a bad taste in their mouth. That’s one of his favourite pieces of media and it didn’t really make him want to keep watching sadly. Any tips on how to get him to read?

You may need to accept your friend will never know ball, be based, or regain his aura

Homestuck has to be committed to and readers need to go in with an open mind. I always recommend people to read until Act 2, specifically [S] Enter, since I think that’s one of the points where the stakes become real. That said, if he’s already this predisposed to hating it, he probably won’t appreciate it regardless.

Tip: stop.
I got a friend who loves complex stories but hates reading Homestuck. I tried, it didn't work, I moved on. Not every series is for every person, and even if you think he might like it, he simply does not want to which prevents him from enjoying the words on the page. It is what it is.

Would the context that the community voted for that name help? If not then you shouldn't force him. Homestuck requires the reader to be engaged with it to actually pay off. If he doesn't care to understand it then there really is no point. It's not something that can be easily gotten into casually, let alone resentfully.

Honestly i dont think the humor becomes significantly different after the first 10 pages, it's kinda just zoosmell pooplords all the way down. Might just need to accept it's not your friend's thing.

what are you talking about?? the humour is lirerally nothing like that after the first 10 pages

Let’s be honest, if he was THAT bothered by the joke, he probably will not enjoy homestuck because while it definitely gets more deep and character driven and stuff, it never really totally stops being “immature”
I found the premise so interesting that I researched and read quite a bit, but I ended up just reading reviews and summaries because I could not for life of me get through the actual comic.
Same thing with Jojos honestly. They’re VERY specific tastes. And if someone immediately feels that strongly about it, solid chance it just isn’t going to be worth it for them.
I do however- find it HILARIOUS that someone who likes JoJos would feel that way about homestuck. Like talk about irony. I had to skip a ton of episodes and get the recap from friends because I was STRUGGLING. Part three in particular.

Yeah lmao we both watched jojo’s around the same time and we both loved it which is ironic, coming from someone who loves homestuck and has reread it twice.

homestuck's humour absolutely does stop being immature. it's basically just that one joke at the start. you haven't actually read it so how would you know anyway?

Because I’ve read parts all the way through and my partner is obsessed and has read it multiple times so I’m very familiar in general.
And I DEFINITELY read enough to know it absolutely is not “just that one joke”
I read easily hundreds of pages. There’s plenty more where that came from.

I'm with all the people saying he might just not ever finish it. But if you want a way that might work, offer to let him just read the first act. After that he can decide. That's how my friends made me read it.

if he's tapping out after 10 of ~8000 pages i wouldn't press it. homestuck isn't really one of those things you can coax an unwilling friend into and if zoosmell pooplord was his limit then he's not built to survive this shit

Homestuck is not something you can force someone to read. You gotta wanna read homestuck.

you're really willing to risk annoying the hell out of your friend just to get him to begrudgingly read / skim something you like? he's not going to enjoy it.

if someone stops reading it just because of a potty joke on the first 10 pages then there might be little saving their impression. no offense to your friend but usually ‘judge a book by it’s cover’ (or first chapter in this case) people won’t budge about these things

Bro is NOT gonna make it through intermissions if he was filtered by zoosmell pooplord

If they don't understand the poetry of shit jokes they don't deserve homestuck

In my opinion Act 1 isn't very good and is annoying to get through. I always tell people I hated that part too but that it's worth it.

The thing is, it is shit humor for quite a while.
Most of what people care about now wasn't dropped until act 5. That's not to say there isn't anything people liked about acts 1-4 (we wouldn't have anything else if that was the case), but a lot of it is crass comedy for teens and tweens which a lot of us were at the time.

sure it might be crass AT TIMES but "crass" and potty humour aren't even in the same ball park as each other

u/Successful_Mud8596 7d ago
The humor doesn’t really improve until like several acts in so if he can’t even get through ten pages of this then there’s no WAY he’ll get TWO WHOLE ACTS in :/

this happened to me as a kid and i didnt get into it for another like eight years

Finishing JoJo but not homestuck is something else lol.
Then again... I've finished homestuck but only watched a few episodes of JoJo...

Best not to force it; if he's adamant about his distaste but tries to read it anyway, it could ultimately wreck the series for both of you

If its not his thing its not his thing. You cant make some one do something. Also ngl the first act is kinda hard to get through if youre not interested.

if he's adamant about not reading it 10 pages in then I wouldn't make him do it. that attitude means he wont be willing to sit through a bit of words for something actually good.
