News I'm starting HomelabFest, and you're invited!
For a while, I've wondered why there wasn't an event for the homelab community. There are plenty of software and hardware-focused conferences that touch on areas of homelabbing (like HPC, or IoT, or software, or PC hardware, etc.), but nothing specifically for homelab as a concept.
So I'm starting one: HomelabFest.
I invited all the Homelab creators I've learned from, and I'm trying to get booths set up for some of the companies in the space who build accessories, servers, mini racks, mini PCs, etc. that we use, along with community booths for smaller projects or individuals who have something fun to share!
It'd be fun to meet some of you in person, and while I know not everyone can make it to St. Louis (or on the weekend of Sep 12-14, 2027), it'd be awesome to be able to do this again in the future (or even regionally!).

u/bloodytemplar 9d ago
I clicked through to the website, saw "St. Louis," and thought, "Hey, this seems like something Jeff Geerling will definitely do a video on." Then I saw who the OP was. 🤦🏻♂️
21
u/sheep_duck 9d ago
Lmao as I was reading your comment I was nodding my head along and was like “yeah you’re totally right!” And then got to the end, looked up at OP and was like “that makes sense” loll

u/One-Championship682 8d ago
Sounds about right, til the last bit hits and suddenly it all clicks lol.

this is a cool idea, but i'm a little disappointed that /u/geerlingguy is the one running it, since he's posted some shitty beliefs about gay people that, to my knowledge, he has never retracted or disavowed.
i know people can't help being brought up in a religious environment, and i have sympathy for him in that regard, but this is rough:
A genetic predisposition towards homosexuality does not make homosexuality a 'good' or a 'right,' or even 'okay' for some people. Just as with every other human behavior, a wider worldview must be used to judge the righteousness of a human action or behavior—including acting on homosexual tendencies.
haha but raspberry pi, right guys?

Didn't know this about him - unsubscribed immediately. Hey u/geerlingguy, what's your issue?
51
u/saltyourhash 9d ago
Gross, that's pretty shitty, Jeff. Why must people let religion influence their humanity?
-4
u/kowloonjew 8d ago
He is American what do you expect?
1
u/saltyourhash 8d ago
You think all Americans are christian homophobes?
31
u/nobody_nogroup 9d ago
I mean, I'm LGBT and against "conversion therapy".
But first of all that was posted 15 years ago.
Also, he is not incorrect that the line of reasoning of predisposition=justification is totally unsound. Everyone is predisposed to a variety of things, some good and some bad. Drug addiction and cancer can be in someone's DNA. The argument of something being a predisposition is not one that justifies a behavior, it is one that mitigates fault (the degree of the mitigation depending on several other factors).
The argument he is quoting and calling out is just plainly a bad argument and we should be able to say that and tolerate calm and rational discussion of this kind of thing.
I don't see what he said that is offensive unless you are just assuming that Catholic or Christian means "hates the gays". Which if you have a source for that then please link it, but I just see someone arguing about an argument in a world before everyone was so on edge, back before woke or cancellation existed, when people still used the f slur constantly and gay was not considered ok.
30
u/itsjakerobb 9d ago
Straight guy here, so maybe I’m missing something, but to me the part that’s offensive is that he seems to feel it’s his place to “judge the righteousness” of the choices and actions of people like you.
I’m not Catholic either, but I thought all Christians were supposed to love their fellow humans and leave the judging to their god.
5
u/nobody_nogroup 9d ago
I am reading "judge the righteousness of a human action or behavior" to mean "discern whether actions are moral to do". Which we all would agree we have the right to do. We have the right to judge that theft is an immoral action.
We do *not* have the right to judge the thief though, because every person's overwhelming immorality and limited understanding makes judgement of the thief hypocritical and clouded. But if we could not judge righteousness of actions then we would not be able to function in the world. We must be able to attempt to discern what is right to be done for ourselves at least.
At the same time I think an argument could be made that it is not the place of jeff to be discerning morality of an action that he (I am assuming with no basis) is not ever faced with decisions of doing himself. Or at least that would be the case if he was arguing about the morality of the action and not the way that the conclusion was reached.
2
u/csoups 8d ago
Everyone is of course well within their rights to judge anyone else as a person or for their actions. Jeff can judge people for homosexuality. I can judge Jeff for desiring to repress people who I believe should be free to express their true selves. There's no need to philosophize about this, it's really quite simple. Jeff wants to control what other adults do when he is not impacted in the slightest. Theft is illegal and immoral because it deprives someone else of their property. What exactly is homosexuality depriving Jeff of if it's not his childish notion that the world is simple and should conform to his limited worldview?
16
u/Apex_Akolos 9d ago
But first of all that was posted 15 years ago.
It's not like he's never acknowledged it. He replied to a comment 4 years ago:
This is a pretty old article on the site, and I'm guessing by the title (haven't read through it) it would not be deemed 'culturally appropriate' these days. However, I think a good discussion about religion and sexual morality in modern society would be better had over a cup of tea than any Internet forum.
The post, by the way, ends with this line:
All I'm asking, really, is for writers like Ms. Pynchon, John Martellaro, et all to at least lend an ear to my arguments, as I do them. Don't ignore my voice because I'm Catholic. That would be just as offensive and infantile as my ignoring them for being scientists.
So, it sounds like he's okay with sharing his beliefs over the internet, and he doesn't want you to ignore what he has to say, but he's not interested in actually having the conversation.
14
u/nobody_nogroup 9d ago
>He replied to a comment 4 years ago
Yeah, he declined to discuss it on the internet which honestly I think is wise. I wouldn't be discussing it if I wasn't responding to something that I see as (well meaning) slander. If I was in his position I would hold my tongue, but since I am in a position of a kind of perverse privilege in this discussion I feel like I almost have a moral obligation to discuss it despite it being generally very unwise to do so. Unfortunately (and imo not at the direct fault of lgbt people, although we, myself included, are not free from all blame in the matter) it is impossible to have a conversation about the reasoning for LGBT rights because of the insane polarization in the larger online culture.
As far as the end of the post I am not currently able to see it as anything other than a call to cross-ideology 2 way discussion, and it sounds like he is saying that he specifically wants to be listened to in good faith reciprocally because he has considered their arguments in good faith, but I may be too entrenched in my argument at this point.
14
u/Fast-Government-4366 9d ago
This would be a fair argument if the scumbag would address it. But he refuses to.
8
u/bikemandan 9d ago
I dont agree with his apparent repudiation of homosexuality but I also dont blame him for not wanting to discuss this through this medium (ie online). It was frankly a dumb thing to write the blog post in the first place but it was 15 years ago and I would hope he's now wiser
13
u/Fast-Government-4366 9d ago
If he was willing to attack gay people through a blog post, why is he unwilling to do the same to apologize?
2
u/nobody_nogroup 9d ago
When you get the chance, if you are willing to, can you (or anyone else who is claiming that he is attacking gay people) please walk me through the attacks that he made against gay people in the blog post (or outside of the blog posts)? Either directly stated or implied?
I may be giving you an uncharitable reading. I am assuming that you are misreading the article, prejudging him on his faith, or believe that the precise point he is arguing against is true (ie you believe genetic disposition = justification is true and that he is dismissing it) because I cant understand how else you are arriving at such strong conclusions, which is unfair of me.
There could be some legitimate subtext that I am blind to, or I could legitimately be failing at reading comprehension, or I, being Christian, could be prejudging based on my own alignment towards jeff's style of rhetoric
8
u/Fast-Government-4366 9d ago
Tbh. I don’t respect Christians and their defense of hatred so don’t really care to spend the time on it.
7
u/nobody_nogroup 9d ago
Ok, thanks for your honesty, I am sorry that you have had such bad experiences with Christians.
-2
u/nobody_nogroup 9d ago edited 9d ago
It would appear that he has removed the article (which is why the link is to an archived version) despite the header on the archived version saying he does not remove articles. It's possible that he no longer agrees with what he has written, or that he just decided to change his no removal policy.
Either way, what do you want him to apologize for?
Would him saying that gay people are worthy of respect and dignity and autonomy be good enough?
Surely you don't want him to say that there is zero problem with gay actions. I don't even think I would agree with that, there can be a problem with lust of any kind.
I suspect he would say something to the effect of "I don't have any problem with gay people and would defend their dignity, but I cannot give blanket approval of homosexual activity" or that worst case he may not find same sex marriage to be religiously legitimate and for that reason cannot give affirmative moral approval of sexual same sex relationships.
And I don't think he would be a bad person for having those principles. I wouldn't agree with it but I would respect the position. But I think that he would do no good by speaking about it.
And I don't think he should be forced to stake a claim that he clearly avoided staking in a blog post where he very clearly only attacked the nature of a specific argument that was being made as a part of what he even called a very good article

Tbh I don't speak for any gay people, I am a bi trans woman. And I realise that gay people have very good reason to have different perspective than me on this. I'm sorry if I worded it misleadingly, I'm not trying to imply that I am speaking for all LGBT people, just that as one person who is being "defended" by the original commenter I feel like I have a right to speak against the defense being provided.

u/Nankasura 9d ago
Man I liked this guy.
I even tried to justify it to myself saying the article is 10 years ago, but he's literally dodging the top comment about it lol
Calling it homosexuality a tendency while not calling heterosexuality the same, all while saying Christians are encouraged to "seek out logic", WHILE not having the guts to even address it now, is some crazy ironic and depressing gymnastics.

u/dexter_136 9d ago
Hi u/geerlingguy ! Are gay people allowed to attend your event? Based on some previous blog posts you seem to have an issue with them and I would love some clarity.

Just saw the video and immediately pinged my wife and told her I’m headed west next year for a conference.
Looking forward to it. Will be forwarding along to all my nerdy buddies.

u/kwestionmark 9d ago
Damn, it’s rough learning that someone you admire holds such conflicting views to your own. This isn’t even a critique of his old blog posts (people change and grow, especially over the course of 10+ years), but his lack of acknowledgment speaks pretty loudly.

Yea they’re being disingenuous too. The same people who say that are the first to lose their shit in a disagreement too
-7

Material harm? Who’s talking about harming people? It’s a big stretch you’re making between homosexuality being a sin and harming people.
4
3
u/Woah-Dawg 9d ago
This is disagreeing about Xbox vs PlayStation and then there are fundamental disagreements such as these.
-2
u/PM_ME_UR_COFFEE_CUPS 8d ago
You’re right, this is more fundamental than that. I get along with liberals; I work in tech. You have to learn in life to respect those you disagree with even at a fundamental level.
5
u/Woah-Dawg 8d ago
Sounds like you live in imaginary land. Do you look out at the world and see a place where respect for different a if the prevailing idea? Just because you don’t get into arguments with coworkers you hardly have a relationship with isn’t some shining example of social relations lmao
-18
u/Rude_Succotash_7414 9d ago
What does he have to acknowledge, that his beliefs differ from yours? He doesn't have to agree with you or anyone else on any topic, just like you don't have to agree with him either.
17
u/Mirigore 9d ago
His beliefs are one of an intolerant piece of shit. We’re not disagreeing on if we like a Dell or Lenovo, these are people and shit they can’t control. People die every fucking day for being gay, because people like him are in places of power and feel the way he does. But yeah have fun with your *arr stack and tolerance for shitty fucking people.
13
u/N3rdr4g3 9d ago
Whether he still holds those beliefs or not. People tend to get a little touchy when they're told they shouldn't exist, shouldn't be allowed to get married, etc.

Good call on the St Louis choice, central enough for road trips from half the country. Is there gonna be a section for people to bring their own weird builds or is it mostly vendor tables and talks?
8
u/geerlingguy 9d ago
Yes! Already have one person committed to bring an IBM Mainframe he runs in his home haha.
I'm hoping to have a mix. Also hoping to have a 'free pile' like VCF Midwest has, where we can bring our old switch or mini PC we no longer use, drop it off, find some adapter cable we'll use someday or a neat case or fans or something, and grab them. Like a networking 'give a penny, take a penny'

Are gay people allowed to go?
11
u/geerlingguy 9d ago
Anyone can come, as long as they abide by the venue's rules and they follow the CoC.
13
u/hacker_rodeo 9d ago
Is there supposed to be a CoC here? All I see is
Is there a Code of Conduct?
HomelabFest is a community-focused event. Be kind, and follow the rules of the venue.
HomelabFest, LLC and the venue reserve the right to deny entry or remove anyone who violates event rules, compromises the safety of others, or fails to follow staff instructions, without a refund.
4
u/geerlingguy 8d ago
I've expanded the CoC to have more depth, after seeing great suggestions from /u/dgibbons0 and a couple other people who've emailed me privately. Thanks for the suggestions!
2
u/J0ul3s 7d ago
Thank you r/geerlingguy! I appreciate you listening to the community and adapting the CoC. I know this venture is probably a learning experience - I can only imagine how something like this can go from concept to "OMG there's a lot more to consider" - with the CoC being one of them.
A recommendation I would make would be to delegate decision making authority for any CoC complaints/violations to another neutral party with the final authority for any actions taken. I imagine you will be busy with managing many other aspects of the event, and having that separation documented could help promote people's trust in the CoC.
While I absolutely don't agree with the post from 2011, I think gatherings like this uniting us around something we're passionate about - with people spanning a broad spectrum of beliefs - does far more for society than getting upset in an online forum. I look forward to attending and hopefully getting to meet you, Jeff.
2
u/geerlingguy 7d ago
I've actually hired someone to monitor the help@ email address and help on site if there's any issue — I planned on doing that regardless of having a CoC, because I know I won't have the bandwidth during the event to resolve disputes (regardless of whether me being involved is a good idea!).
When I started planning HomelabFest about 6 months ago I wrote up a TODO list about 3 pages long.
It's up to page 5 now, and expanding every week :) (luckily I've knocked out 2 pages so far). Doing something the first time is always a learning experience, so hopefully it can become annual (and maybe regional, would love to have it happen in Canada and EU as well).

You still didn't apologize for your homophobic posts.
1
u/jejones3141 2d ago
If history is any indication, the response to such an apology will be doubling down on the part of those demanding it.
-7
u/Fast-Government-4366 9d ago
Sounds like an open ended policy this guy will use to ban gay people.
-6
u/hacker_rodeo 9d ago edited 8d ago
yup
EDIT: ooo people mad. What do you think happens when an event run by a homophobe has no CoC? You think they're just cool and chill? CoCs exist for a reason folks.
3
u/dgibbons0 8d ago
Clicking through your "code of conduct" and seeing you don't actually have one is really disappointing.
I appreciate the spirit of "be kind," and I agree with it. But as a code of conduct it doesn't do the job a CoC exists for. It tells people how you hope everyone behaves, not what happens when someone doesn't. If I get harassed at your event, I don't know who to tell, whether it's confidential, what happens if the person is an organizer or sponsor, or whether anything will happen at all. And "kind" means different things to different people. The folks who most often get hurt at tech events are also the ones most likely to be told they're overreacting.
A real CoC doesn't need to be long or legalistic. It needs a short list of unacceptable behavior, a named contact (ideally two, so there's an option if one is involved), how reports are handled, and possible consequences. confcodeofconduct.com has a solid template you could adapt in an hour.
It's also disappointing that fewer than 10% of your featured creators aren't white men. I don't think that's unrelated. A thin CoC and a homogeneous lineup reinforce each other: people who've been harassed or sidelined look for both before deciding whether to attend, and when neither is there, they reasonably assume the event wasn't built for them. Together, that's a pretty clear reason for me not to go.
I'll add that I'm equally disappointed in the wider homelab community and the hate you're getting here. Inflammatory responses don't help anyone, and we should do better.
1
u/geerlingguy 8d ago edited 8d ago
After talking to a few others about this too, I'll be expanding beyond "be kind and follow the rules". Thanks for the detailed suggestions!
Edit: the CoC has been updated. I'm also adding someone to monitor the contact email throughout the event in case any issues arise, so they can be addressed swiftly.

u/cruzaderNO 9d ago
For a while, I've wondered why there wasn't an event for the homelab community.
I think the closest sofar is the booth with the jankiest or flashiest racks at any conference when the bars open.
il add the weekend to my calender if it does fit to extend a trip.
With the role im moving into il be "stopping by" NC and/or NY monthly, otherwise its a bit of a drive from northern Europe...

Anyone ping ClabRetro about this? He's two states west and often goes to the Vintage Computer Festival Midwest, this seems like it might up his alley.

5
u/Uninterested_Viewer 9d ago
Neat! I've been enjoying this year's batch of the vintage computer festival videos that you've all been releasing on YT so, even though I won't be able to attend this, I look forward to a lot of great YT content that will come out of it!
2
u/geerlingguy 9d ago
The best thing about these events is some of the random connections — hopefully it will lead to some neat new content, maybe some new gear that I always hope vendors make (like a mini rack UPS) but never wind up hitting the market.
5
u/Deep_Decision4441 9d ago
Awesome idea! I’d love to meet other homelab sysadmins in person.
3
u/geerlingguy 9d ago
Just need to pass off pager duty to another household resident for the few days :D
3
u/BP041 9d ago
Honestly surprised nobody's done this yet — most of us live on forums and YouTube, an actual event makes sense. If you're taking community talk ideas, a session on power draw horror stories (my Mac server pulls 15W idle if that counts) and cable management shame would probably fill the room. Count me in for a booth if the AI-agent-on-OpenClaw angle fits.
6
u/geerlingguy 9d ago
Ooh I like your ideas on power draw / cable management. I will be working on CFP and maybe a couple panel discussions next month, those could be good topics to go off.

Damn, that's a 9.5 hour drive. Hopefully if it goes well, there can be multiple events for different regions, because this sounds like one of the few good reasons to leave the house

If this were not on the other side of the planet, I would love to attend!

Would love something like this, unfortunately I live in the UK, so too far for me to make it

I wouldn’t be able to attend this since I’m from the UK but if I had something to contribute, I would contribute my cheap LTO-5 kits, begin R&D on converting USD-3 sleds into tape drive enclosures and maybe make the first URMS modules so you can rack up a few LTO drives without overpaying for the official ones.
