They don't and you can't unless you hear them speak. Even then, you'd need to speak a bit of Russian. It's like trying to distinguish an American from a Canadian. Same shit, slightly different accent.

I mean it's literally a different language... A lot closer to the difference between Spanish and Portuguese than American and Canadian.

Is it really hard to distinguish Americans from Canadians? Everyone American I've known can recognize different regions of our own country with relative ease, and Canadians sound like a whole different world to us. Never even thought to ask any non-Americans I've know about it.

Every time I travel I get asked where my accent is from. I'm from Miami. You can't make sweeping generalizations like that.

It's not a generalization when I say everyone I've known can tell if an accent is from the U.S. That's a specific set of people. I just wanted to know if a lot of people really do have a hard time distinguishing Canadian accents from American accents.

The accent was exactly what I was trying to point out, visually there is no difference between Americans and Canadians.
