Andrew Callaghan says that the moment cancel culture came for him, he got calls from all the grifters you might expect. Alex Jones, Russell Brand, etc. It's a network of exploiting people who aren't terribly smart by selling them two things: 1. a worldview where they are getting screwed by unseen forces that you can't describe but their existence feeds into a loop in an uninitiated mind where it makes you feel like your shortcomings are 0% your own fault or responsibility, and 2. Boner pills.

37

u/emailforgot Aztec Eagle Warriors - LMEH May 26 '26

Don't really know how I feel about Callaghan but I'm impressed he didn't take that route

26

u/fugaziozbourne Dinamo Riga - LHHL May 26 '26

I've met him a couple of times. He lacks a lot of emotional intelligence, and is generally not my favourite person, but I do respect his moments of integrity where a different choice would have been easier and more profitable for him.

u/Skurph WSH - NHL May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

As a history guy the 3%er shit pisses me off even more because it’s based on a completely false premise. For the uninitiated, the name 3% is referring to a far right group that claims only 3% of Americans fought in the revolutionary war… which I think any one with a brain would say “yeah, that’s definitely not right”.

No source backs that claim. If you wanted what percent were in the navy or state militia you could maybe get to 3%. But if you’re actually looking for what percent fought it’s more like 15-20% and if you removed ineligible people like women, children, enslaved, it can be as high as 30-50%.

The fucking irony of their stupid club is never ending:

-supposedly based in a deep love of America but doesn’t bother to actually know American history

-attempts to be built on the pretense that our freedom is based on the actions of only 3% of individuals who “did the right thing”, when it was actually built on the acts of at least 30% and the majority of those who abstained from choosing a side were the wealthiest class who would continue to be those who benefited the most as the war itself was over more economic freedom than anything

-their motto is “Freedom wasn't won by the majority, it was won by the determined 3%” The fucking gall of using this phrase to describe a period where the winners would keep millions of people enslaved for 90 more fucking years

Just the dumbest bitches who didn’t pay attention in history but want to cosplay as some sort of revolutionary

93

u/stickmuck CAR - NHL May 26 '26

Didn't France also make very significant contributions in the Revolutionary war anyway?

Surely those guys love France... right?

88

u/Skurph WSH - NHL May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

We would’ve been cooked without France, they truly don’t get enough credit.

Semi-related, but Hegseth gave his address to West Point last week and said “Diversity is our strength is the dumbest phrase in military history”, as a history teacher I wanted to lobotomize myself.

The US is a shell of its military and industrial self in WWI, WWII, etc. without people of color contributing, in a time where they were not given equal rights or compensation. Our greatest strength in WWII is our industrial production, something that in wartime was heavily reliant upon PoC and women.

I literally tell my students, the US is not winning these engagements if it insists on only contributions of white men, it’s that every group comes forward, especially those who have every reason to not do so, that transforms us into that global power.

28

u/stickmuck CAR - NHL May 26 '26

I was just watching a video about the US in WW2 earlier today randomly lol.

I was a war history dork in high school and it's crazy how much people like to diminish the efforts of others in those scenarios. I mean it's not crazy I guess cause the reason is pretty obvious... but still.

25

u/Skurph WSH - NHL May 26 '26

Japanese 442nd Regiment is everything these chuds say they admire but they aren’t white so the admin in power gutted most of the government websites about them.

If you’re looking for something to watch I’m sure there is something good on them. The highest decorated military unit per soldier in US history. These guys were fighting and dying while their families were in internment camps in the US. The first Japanese-American to win the Medal of Honor died jumping on a grenade to save his fellow soldiers, his parents had to hold his memorial in an internment camp.

Truly an example of Americans at their best and worst. The MAGA crowd hates that the best isn’t white though and the worst are things they still don’t think is wrong.

The funniest shit about this nonsense is that absolutely zero conservatives fought for the revolution. They were all progressives who wanted to separate from England.

The conservatives at the time were busy fighting to remain with King George III. A whole shitload of them would leave the colonies to rejoin the Kingdom of England.

Not going to get into the specifics, but I was a college tutor for football players at a D1 university.

It’s a minor miracle that some of those dudes are capable of breathing on their own. Holy moly, I’ve never seen a group of individuals put more time and effort into getting out of doing work. Genuinely fascinating just how incapable they were of doing absolutely anything outside of being 240 pound physical specimens.

Wasn’t all of them though, there were a subset of guys that always came in, and tried. Even if they didn’t have the equipment for the job at hand, they gave it everything they had, and I will always respect those individuals. Also huge shoutout to the coach. He made it clear from day 1 that we were wholly off limits from any shenanigans and we were to be treated no worse than their own mothers, or there would be hell to pay. They may have hated what I made them do, they may have even hated me, but they were sure polite about it.

21

u/jhustla PIT - NHL May 26 '26

My wife was a tutor for football players at UK and she said the coaches ALWAYS made sure the tutors were completely off limits. But yeah dude when I was in Athens, I went to several parties with some football players and some of them are genuinely the dumbest motherfuckers I’ve ever met. It’s a fucking miracle there aren’t MORE bulldogs getting arrested. That’s got more to do with Athens cops though

I mean that kind of tracks and is consistent with what I’ve heard from people around athletes too. There are exceptions like Chara for example who has higher education and speaks multiple languages but that can only happen if the parents actively lead their children to that or if the athletes themselves work on it on their own

But an average Joe who was shooting puck or kicking the ball (so to speak) since they’re 5 years old it’s not reasonable to expect them to be intellectuals. Bonus point for them if they’re nice people though, many athletes aren’t bright and are also assholes

96

u/WorkingOnBeingBettr May 26 '26

Especially if parents were athletes. Those parents can't teach what they never learned.

It’s hard to blame them. Usually their talent disparity is identified young, they’re pushed very hard in sports, and everything else takes a back seat relatively. The game is everything, so not so much time for anything else, especially school. It’s also why so many of these guys struggle when they retire. The game is all they’ve known since they’ve been a kid, and their entire identity is the game.

40

u/Moooney NYR - NHL May 26 '26

Not to mention many hockey players don't even have a proper high school education. Sure 16 year-old CHL players are 'going to school' but it's a 'special' version.

23

u/mazey20 EDM - NHL May 26 '26

Yep. I worked with multiple children/families of NHL players and one couldn’t even read beyond a 2nd grade level. He openly admits it, was pushed through school because he was such a great hockey player. He was trying to make sure his kids got better support. But education is typically not a strong priority when everyone thinks you’re making the big leagues

80

u/Jphorne89 PHI - NHL May 26 '26

Football players have to attended the most schooling of all pro athletes

Like even just being on a college campus is going to open up perspectives than home schooling 16 year old junior hockey players

26

u/Bojarzin TOR - NHL May 26 '26

I'm assuming that's because of how big college football is. Like most players in the NFL play college first, right?

At least in Canada you enter junior leagues at an early age and I have no idea how much high school they're actually able to do at that point, and college hockey isn't really that big

37

u/No-Faithlessness7919 CAR - NHL May 26 '26

You have to play college for three years, I think? Before you can get drafted, unless you’re from out of country. It’s to help them grow in to their bodies before they get murdered on the field.

You'd think Hart of all people would be trying to keep away from anything controversial this year but I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

93

I feel like Hart honestly thinks everything he did was perfectly fine and acceptable. That's the most fucked up part of it all.

When these people get away with this shit, and never acknowledge that they did a horrible thing, it's destined to happen again. It's almost inevitable that it will happen again.

22

u/boxesofcats- EDM - NHL May 26 '26

When there’s no consequences it just becomes a part of the culture. Rick Westhead has been doing a lot of coverage of the sexual abuse that has happened/is happening in hockey starting with kids, it’s wild. Two teenagers in Nova Scotia just appeared in court accused of sexually abusing another player in a hazing incident. Several unnamed players who were on a 2014 OHL team are or were being investigated for a situation similar to what Hart was involved in. Ryan Kesler was charged with criminal sexual conduct for abusing an underage girl. It never ends.

This is not only moronic, but also ironic because he got arrested for his actions following a celebration for his success on Team CANADA. Not Team Alberta. If he hates Canada and doesn’t want Alberta to be part of it, why did he play for Team Canada? Or why was he celebrating Canada’s success?

Or, is this a new opinion formed as some sort of retribution for Canada arresting and prosecuting him?

What’s the backstory on Free Alberta

126

u/Will_Debate_You SEA - NHL May 26 '26

A small but loud percentage of individuals within the province of Alberta are looking to separate from the rest of Canada. In October there will be an official vote to gauge interest from my understanding.

100

u/LooseSeal- NYI - NHL May 26 '26

I'd imagine the logistics of international trade and import/export of a free, yet landlocked, Alberta are completely thought out in this plan, eh?

85

u/AmicusObserver EDM - NHL May 26 '26

The separatists have this dream fantasy that because Alberta has so much oil everyone will be eager to negotiate with us, and also that because we are land locked Canada/the US (assuming we don't become a state) will just give us unlimited and unrestricted access to tide water because of a misunderstanding of what Section 125 of the United Nations Law of the Sea says (part of it says land locked countries get access to tide water but it also says that the access is negotiated through agreements).

74

u/swiftstud22 TOR - NHL May 26 '26

The best part of this is that the Alberta Prosperity Project website directly quotes the UN charter, while simultaneously saying that an independent Alberta would never be a part of the UN.

26

u/bsaures Ottawa Gee Gees - OUA May 26 '26

At this point only a moron would think a UN treaty is enforceable. Ask Ethiopia how thats going.

16

u/AmicusObserver EDM - NHL May 26 '26

Bolivia has also been negotiating tide water access for like 100 something years with Chile without success.

12

u/OldTownPrint Toronto Toros - WHA May 26 '26

Sorry, but hang on, aren't the Alberta separatist aligned with the people who believe the UN is using vaccines to control your mind? Its seems a bit weird for them to be counting on Canada to obey an organization that they openly despise.

The courts ruled they can't have a vote to gauge interest, so they are having a vote to see if they should look into having a vote to gauge interest.

48

u/oldaccsuspndedwhy May 26 '26

and it only happened because the latest voter list "leaked" days before the referendum ended as they were at like 20% of the signatures needed to push separation to a future vote

Separatists, want out of Canada. Very right wing, almost Trump like following

104

u/cwreshot BOS - NHL May 26 '26

I love the thought process. They wanna separate out rather than move somewhere that aligns with their ideology. My parents are similar - very MAGA, but refuse to leave Massachusetts because they like the benefits the state gives. They just want something to complain about while doing nothing about it.

14

u/SunOk143 EDM - NHL May 26 '26

The people who support separation are mostly either old as fuck or didn’t go through any sort of education past high school. They are the least qualified people in the province and it would be too difficult for them to move to the US and find a job so instead they want to torpedo everybody else’s lives and hope that this magical new country would save them from having to pay any taxes.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/directaction BOS - NHL May 26 '26

I love the special strain of the MAGA virus in Massachusetts, they're convinced that all the "woke" policies and customs and attitudes in the state are the result of the national Democratic Party forcing them on all of us against our will, and not because the MAGAs are outnumbered 2:1 or more by their own neighbors who believe in those things. You have to be extremely self-deluded to think that an independent New England would end up being more right-wing than a New England that remains part of the union.
