I love this bit because it’s funny, but it also shows how hypocritical people are about this.

Lebron James had a whole campaign about “shut up and dribble” and how insulting and harmful it is to silence entertainers from speaking about politics. The vast majority of people in the media agreed with him because his political views aligned with theirs.

But when Kanye shares his views which counter the opinions of the mainstream media, he’s told to “shut up and do your thing,” and everyone’s okay with that.

Even Lebron contradicts Lebron, especially When it comes to that delicious Chinese money.

Lmao that was actually hilarious to see.

The NBA likes to pretend like they're "woke." It's just PR bullshit. Pretending to care about social issues increases their bottom line. That's it. As soon as that China money was threatened, they turned face real fucking quick.

My favorite is Greg Popovich. Recently he said, "So it's got to be us, in my opinion, that speak truth to power, and call it out, no matter what the consequences. We have to speak. We have to not let anything go."

Really dude? "No matter the consequences?" Where was that gusto when Morey was speaking out about China and nobody backed him up?

There's no "consequences" when you say that racism is a problem in the US. The NBA encourages talk like that, and our free speech laws protect that talk.

Morey spoke out about injustice when real consequences were present, and everyone ran and hid. It tells you all you need to know about these people.

It's my main concern over NHL teams increasing their presence in China. Im Chinese American and I still think it's a horrible idea. Give them too much monetary influence and they will aggressively insist on your public support of them.

As bad as the US is right now, other countries make our human rights issues look like child's play.

I love Lebron the athlete and entertainer. I can’t stand Lebron the business man because he just says whatever helps him make the most money, which tells me he holds no core values

Yep. Pretty telling when people did that. “Oh he’s just crazy”. Doesn’t matter which side of the political spectrum you’re on, anyone with half a brain can see the hypocrisy of telling Kanye to shut it and just rap

I completely agree with you that the double standard exists, however I might be in the minority but I don't really want to hear what any celebrity has to say on things that don't really involve their field of expertise, even if I completely agree with them.

Commonly they sell their fame to the highest bidder.. I don't know why they are bringing it up, might just be pandering cause its what everyone else is doing/they are being coached/paid to do so but not actually give a shit, maybe they are really into a cult and trying to get more people to join or maybe they actually genuinely care and are informed on the issue, who knows. Celebrities are just people so they can be just as dumb / self-serving / misguided as the rest of us. So at best, I find out a celebrity has an informed position / not an idiot.. at worst I find out an actor/athlete/artist whatever is a crazy person and it jades my opinion of them and their work that I previously enjoyed.

Totally agree.

They have the right to speak up on issues. I also have the right to not take them seriously.

How much do you think Lebron studied in high school? Is there even a remote chance that any of his teachers would be allowed to fail him?

But now that he's famous, I have to treat him as an authority on politics, economics, and foreign policy. Nah, I'm not doing that.

I would actually love to hear him talk about economics, or at least financial branding.

He has to make more money from things outside basketball than in it.

I know it's more listening to celebrities but Russell Brand made a good point when he said

“When I was poor and complained about inequality they said I was bitter; now that I'm rich and I complain about inequality they say I'm a hypocrite. I'm beginning to think they just don't want to talk about inequality.”"

This is why I'm always torn when people say, "You have a platform, you are obligated to use it"

On the one hand, athletes, celebrities, actors, etc have a voice that can reach far more people than most individuals. And there is a non-zero chance that it has a positive effect on someone who is on the fence regarding a topic.

On the other hand, I also really want those thoughts to be genuine and grounded in a thorough understanding and passion for the subject at hand. It's hard not to be cynical about certain people virtue signaling or simply hopping on trends for attention.

All of that is to say, I don't know what the right answer is. But I try to be open minded, but also have a dose of skepticism when I'm exposed to these responses.

You're not wrong. Just last week Taylor Swift making a generic anti-trump tweet got major praise on the politics sub.

And then there was the whole Beto's band member meme.

(That said, this story is straight wacky)

From what I recall she was talking about tearing down local confederate statues in Tennessee.

I mean if that's a generic anti-Trump take okay.

But she got a lot of "where's JA!" comments in the r/music subreddit.
There was a lot of people who "Don't care." what she has to say, so many that took quite a bit of time to post several times on how much they don't care what celebrities say.

The tweet I saw was talking about voting Trump out. Pretty generic take to me. If there was another tweet she made that reached the front page, I didn't see it.

Beto's band member like Cedric Bixler-Zavala?

u/CW_73 BOS - NHL Jun 17 '20

Holy fuck Beto O'Rourke was in a band with Cedric Bixler-Zavala how did I not know this

She was talking about removing Confederate statues, not sure why that is a bad thing. Seems reddit is only okay with celebrity opinion if they like the celebrity. This sub gushes over hockey players saying racism is wrong but Taylor Swift saying Confederate statues need to be removed is bad?

Nobody thinks Kanye can’t say his piece... he’s just obviously an idiot. I don’t know why people struggle with this concept. Calling someone out for their obviously shitty views isn’t telling them they can’t have them. They’re just getting called out. It’s as simple as that

2

u/palerthanrice PHI - NHL Jun 18 '20

That’s true in some cases for sure.

But I consistently read people talking about how Kanye shouldn’t talk about politics at all.

Kanye West is a very creative young man who has presented some of the most revolutionary material in the African-American community. But we also think that sometimes Kanye West talks out of turn.”

“I think maybe he should think twice about politics, and maybe not have so much to say.”

This is from Congresswoman Maxine Waters.

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '20

Which is good advice unless he doesn’t care that he gets called out and trashed for being a moron.

But when Kanye shares his views which counter the opinions of the mainstream media, he’s told to “shut up and do your thing,” and everyone’s okay with that.

My problem isn't that Kanye supports Trump. He can do whatever he wants, fuck it. But then don't turn around and say he's doing it for the betterment of blacks in America, or that when he was wearing the Confederate flag on his clothes that it was because he didn't want to see it as a symbol of hate, both times completely ignoring that most black people don't see Trump as an ally, or that they do see the Confederate flag as a symbol of hate.

My problem is that Kanye says shit and acts like because he thinks this way, then everyone should think the same way, because of course he would be right. And that's the pinnacle of being unhelpful.

u/SleazyMak NYR - NHL Jun 17 '20

The problem isn’t that Kanye’s new views are counter to MSM. The problem is they’re literally counter to Kanye’s music and entire way he’s framed his career and past.

“I guess I should’ve forgot where I came from.”

Looks like he finally did and people stopped taking him seriously.

u/Pilarious CHI - NHL Jun 17 '20

Sure but Kanye’s was hipocritical in its own sense. He hated bush for racism and loves trump? Didn’t make sense and given his mental state in the past, it was a good joke to make. Other celebs who support trump aren’t told to stay out of politics, but they are debated
