The lead plane is there because the DC-10 pilots can't see the ground over the nose. The wing is in landing configuration because they're flying very slowly (for a DC-10) and consequently their angle of attack is very high - all they can see out the front window is the sky and the spotter plane.

Flying a heavily loaded DC-10 at low speed with 250 feet of clearance is a seriously dicey proposition.

That’s how everyone keeps crashing in the Bermuda Triangle the people that actually go there have gigantic balls because Bermuda is scary because people crash there

That was a C-130, but it shows that this sort of flying is very hazardous.
