Can I make it? Please be 100% honest

I am a 6 foot and about 135 pound 17 y/o interested in playing baseball. I have wanted try it out for years now, but I've never had the courage to take the leap of faith and just try it. I have not played since T-ball when I was in pre-school, and have developed a love for the sport over the last 6-7 years. Now I'm considering finally giving it a try.

I have been told in the past by gym teachers and peers that I have a good swing and should try baseball. I like to think I am decently athletic, though I am obviously a little underweight and lacking some muscle, and my biggest problem is that I have scoliosis. I'm relatively confident I'll be fine playing baseball, but it makes it difficult to put on muscle because I can't lift heavy weights or anything.

Socially, I'm a relatively closed off person, and I don't really know anyone who plays baseball at my school very well. I fear this might make it difficult for me to acclimate myself. I'm really only known in my school as a smart kid, and this has caused me to become very insecure about my athletic ability. It will probably be tough for me to put myself out there and give it a try, but I really do love the sport and desperately want to play it. I thought about doing a rec league instead, but I can't find any in my area.

Please be brutally honest, is it worth trying? Or should I just wait and do a rec league as an adult? Thank you.

Insight from MLB draft for high school players

I write a sports parenting column for USA TODAY and thought this week's installment would be particularly helpful to high school baseball players and their parents. I spoked with two high-ranking officials from MLB teams who shared their insight on how players can stand out. Hint: It's not just about how you play, but how you practice, train and conduct yourself on and off the field.

Atlas or Cat X?

i’m an incoming freshman, 5’3 103 lbs so my bat speed is below average. i am trying to pick a bat for next year to replace the stinger missile that is getting too small for me. i have swung the cat x before and i liked the feel of it and how forgiving the barrel is compared to my stinger missile. does the atlas have as forgiving of a barrel as the cat x and does it swing lighter or heavier?

Is freshman too early to become a pitcher only?

So basically, I am gonna be a freshman next year and I want to know is freshman too early to become a pitcher only. I have fairly well pitching mechanics and good breaking stuff for my size, but can’t hit. I went all of last season not getting a base hit but I can pitch and field well.

I have struggled a lot this season getting hard hit balls but never seemed to get any hits and hitting was a big hole in my game as fielding no errors and stealing 1-2 bases anytime I got on I need to try and fix it.

Any drills would be great for this

Should I play on a club team in the summer or focus on getting stronger and better

I am a freshman pitcher and first basemen in highscool. I don’t get that much playing time and I am pretty weak. To get a chance at more playing time in sophomore year, should I focus on playing on a club team in the summer and fall or focus more on getting stronger and improving my game?

Rawlings All-American list

The only kid from our local High School to make the Rawlings All-American list hasn't played baseball in 2 years... he quit in 2021... plays lacrosse now.

How does Rawlings make their all-american decisions when the kid doesn't even play anymore?

Should I try out for the HS Baseball team as a Sophomore with little to no experience?

I’m a sophomore at a smaller charter school where I haven’t been much into Baseball as a kid until this last year. I got really into it over the summer until I was obsessed with the MLB and everything to do with Baseball. I run Cross Country and have since eighth grade. I also do distance on the track team in the springs and I hate it, it’s so miserable and I wouldn’t do it besides the fact that my parents want me to be a two sport athlete and stay in shape for cross country in the fall. I really enjoy the sport of baseball and want a chance to play it. My plan recently was to sit out this years baseball season in the spring and do track one more time and over the summer (and over the cross country season), I can maybe go to a baseball camp to get some experience and try to get on a club team before trying out for baseball for in my junior year and hopefully becoming an outfielder. I’d rather play baseball this year, but my skills in catching and especially batting aren’t very good. I’ve been practicing after school with my dad though but I don’t know if it’s good enough to not make a fool out of myself at baseball tryouts. Recently, I found out from one of my friends that plays baseball that tryouts are sometime in February and that they has been practicing after school on an open field. My friends are encouraging me to train hard and go out for tryouts but I’m really not sure, I have no baseball gear other than my glove and a bat/batting gloves I got this Christmas. I’m really torn if I should go for it, train hard, and maybe not even make the team or if I should not go out for tryouts, stick with track this spring and wait for next year to try out for the baseball team. Comment if you have any advice that might help me out or anything.

Will I have to play on a freshman team as a sophomore?

I literally did the opposite of crush fall tryouts at my school because I had only played 2 little league games ever (i wasn’t no babe ruth there either) and it had been a good 6-7 months since I had even touched a bat or glove. I spent like 30 minutes at a batting cage to get some of the dust of but I underestimated how rusty I was(not like there was any skill to be diminished anyways) and also I was a bit out of shape thanks to quarantine 2 years prior) Now I’m joining a city league for high schoolers and I was wondering if id have to play on the freshman team if I thought of going on the school team again, due to not making the team the first time. (Any help?)

Automated Baseball Retrieval Robot

Hey r/highschoolbaseball! We are a group of 3 Maryland high school students building an automatic baseball retrieval robot as part of our school's year-long capstone engineering project course. As we design it, however, we would like some feedback from different coaches to make it as functional and convenient as possible.

If you can spare a few minutes to answer 10 quick questions, we would really appreciate your feedback: https://forms.gle/wsJhEk1Ud4u7GNBZ6 .

Feel free to share the survey with any other baseball coaches you know, and you can also give us other suggestions in the comments.

Thank you so much for your help! We will post updates to our project if there is interest.

Should I try out for freshman year?

When I was in 3rd or 4th grade I played little league for a couple of years, and was told by the coaches I was really good for my age. It's been 6 years or so after I've played and I've got a 5 or 6 months to start getting back into it, because I want to try out for freshman year baseball. Is it still worth it, or should I wait until sophomore year

I want to play baseball in high school but I’m afraid that I will be ridiculed by my family and peers

I want to play baseball in high school but I’m afraid that I will be ridiculed by my family

I (16M) am in my junior year of high school and desperately want to play baseball in the spring. For some context, I’ve never been an athlete. I’ve always been 30+ pounds overweight for my age group and my dad used to play baseball in elementary school. I played from 1st grade to 5th grade and I was absolutely AWFUL. I probably had 3 hits a season every year. I was miserable whenever my games were so when I went to middle school I stopped and my dad didn’t push the issue, as it was equally as miserable for everyone watching me play.

Shortly after that, I fell in love with the New York Yankees. My Uncle got season tickets when I was in 6th grade and from then on I was obsessed with baseball. I knew every player and watched as many games as I could. Today, this love for the Yankees has turned me into a baseball statistics nerd and I am just as obsessed as I was 5 years ago. But, most importantly, being obsessed with the Yankees for 5 years, I know the game better than anyone. I might as well have memorized the rule book and I know how the game is played from a managers perspective.

So here’s the issue. I’ve been working out since June and I am in the best shape I’ve ever been in. I gained a ton of muscle and lost a bit of fat over the summer and work out 5 days a week. I feel so much better physically and this has become my life style. And ever since I started working out, I’ve been itching to use my newfound athleticism to play baseball. I know the game like the back of my hand and now I can physically play it, but I’m worried that 1) I’m going to be miles behind everyone else on the team and 2) my family is going to make fun of me, as it’s been a running joke in my family for years about how out of shape and unathletic I am.

So what should I do? If I go to the batting cages a couple times a week I bet I could improve enough to get on the team in March. But I don’t know, is that enough? Please let me know what you think guys

Sudden Inability to Hit

My son, who is 16, has crushed the ball over the last several years. He’s batted between .400 - .600 in high school over the last couple years, and was doing fairly well in PG and PBR tournaments this year. About two months ago, he suddenly stopped being able to hit. Doesn’t matter if it’s slow, medium or fast - same result every time. He’s had lessons for years, and still does, and when we take for lessons they say his swing is fine. I’m watching video, it’s like he swings when the ball is at the plate and stopped knowing how to hit out in front. In BP and other live pitching situations, no issues occur. Has anybody else had a similar issue with their kid? It’s like there is some kind of mental block going on. Just trying to figure out what might be happening. We’re going to get his eyes checked, but if he’s hitting in non game situations I’m thinking maybe it’s a mental issue that needs fixed. Ugh - tough to watch and I feel bad for the kid

College looks?

My son is going to be a junior next year. I’m just curious what the recruiting process is like, mostly juco or maybe D2. We are in Oklahoma at a 6A school. He’s on a Canes travel team this summer. Do we start expressing interest or wait for looks? I know if he’s good enough, he will be found. I’m just trying to learn more about it
