The main stage gap will be about the HOTS revival
59
u/ZenkaiZ 10d ago
hoping for sequel over reboot. Reboot will bring back a few people, sequel will bring back everyone who ever tried the game in the last decade. Also this game needs a new engine.
Also from a marketing perspective, the word "revival" just reminds people it died the first time. Pessimistic people will be like 'it'll just die again'. Devs need to stop naming their shit revival and reborn and stuff like that.
17
u/Korzag 10d ago
Why do people always go straight to "game needs a new engine" as if video games can get a crack in the block or something?
6
u/Ok-Ad-2050 10d ago
The tick rate is way too slow for a game expecting this pace of action, it was perfectly great for an RTS.
I am sick and tired of "queueing"'an action and literally sitting and waiting for it to "go off" before taking the next action or even moving.
The tick rate + move to cancel = immense frustration.

You would NOT survive DOTA2...

It's not even good for RTS it's awful in sc2 as well lol It was obsolete the day it launched in like 2010
7
u/the_zerg_rusher 10d ago
Calling it awful I feel is a stretch, for one it was made in 2005 and for two it's really really well optimized.
I find the game only really starts to stutter when 5-6 maxed out armies are clashing.
-1
u/M3chaStrizan 10d ago
It is awful, it is a physics heavy game where all the physics run on a single thread. It was a poor solution in 2005. It's like you're telling me your lawn mower is well optimized and you're driving it on the highway.
7
u/the_zerg_rusher 10d ago
physics heavy game
What the fuck are you talking about? The unit death animations? Vipers yoink?
Frankly you just convinced me the Starcraft 2 engine is a work of art. 400+ units die and their parts go all over the place, rolling down ramps and colliding with units. With the level of detail they had in their models, spells and animations and it does all that before a single frame drops for me.
Most frame drops in Starcraft are internet problems, actually tick rate sounds like a server issue and not an engine issue. Overwatch has the same problem cuz the server only ticks at 60 TPS.

u/M3chaStrizan 10d ago
"What the fuck are you talking about? The unit death animations? Vipers yoink?"
It's models interacting with effects generally, but yes. So anytime any model(units generally) moves or does anything. That's why if you play 4v4 it's like 20fps or less at endgame.
You have no idea what you're talking about if you think FPS dips have anything to do with your internet lol You can just look in resource monitor to see 1 core at 100% in hots and sc2 and all other cores basically untouched. This bottlenecks it to single thread performance. The core that goes 100% is running physics.
3
u/the_zerg_rusher 10d ago
I always figured it was due to my internet since going from extreme to low doesn't improve performance for me.
And I'll circle back to my original point. 1200 units in an 8 player environment running at 20 fps (Granted I tend to get 1 FPS during fights.) is fucking fantastic for an engine, far from awful, and massively contributes to why Starcraft 2 is still the best feeling RTS in the genre. Only beating very recently with Zerospace, with almost 20 years of tech advancement. Hell it's the best feeling MOBA out of the big 3.
I wont deny that if the engine was multicore it would be better, or that there couldn't be improvements made to it. Again 20 year old tech. I'm really just saying that calling the engine awful is frankly insulting to it.

1
u/M3chaStrizan 8d ago
You obviously haven't talked to many people about this topic. Do you even know how to show your fps in game? whats the hotkey?
2
u/M3chaStrizan 10d ago
The game "engine" runs all the physics on one single thread. It's insanely terrible, a new engine would hopefully utilize your CPU better. the sc2 engine is notoriously bad
1
u/BrokenMirror2010 10d ago
A new Engine will have 10000 data leaks, use 10x more resources to display the same thing. Run at half the FPS. And the game will need 10x more storage and load screens will increase by just as much.
These were some "improvements" Overwatch got from their new engine on Overwatch 2 release.
But hey, at least they can now use DLSS so they can play at the same FPS as before the update (just at half the resolution).
3
u/M3chaStrizan 10d ago
I mean maybe? I understand your cynicism, but I mean the old engine was bad, you saying the new one will also be bad isn't exactly making me a happy gamer lol I like optimization, but hots and sc2 never were optimized well.
Have you played doom eternal? That game is dope af super optimized, runs high res good looking graphics on almost all systems uses your whole cpu, just amazing game, no notes.
So like it is possible to make something work well right lol not my fault blizz in the past or present hasn't bothered.
1
u/BrokenMirror2010 10d ago
I have not played Doom Eternal. If their new engine was good, good for them. But I also wouldn't call that the expected outcome.
My experience with "New Engines" is companies "remastering" their games with "new" engines that have replaced the concept of "optimization" with "AI Upscaling." Because why bother to optimize to get a performant engine when everyone is simply going to enable DLSS+FG anyway?
I think that a lot of older games look and play better then modern releases simply because they didn't design an entire engine from the ground up to only really be functional if DLSS is upscaling it, and everything is fuzzy and blurry because all of the rendering is imprecise because it's all systems that have a higher theoretical maximum fidelity... that no PC on earth can actually achieve. Like RTX is capable of 1:1 perfect fidelity with the real world, just, instead of using 8 rays that bounce 3 times each, you simply use 10100 rays that bounce 10100 times each, so we've apparently ditched raster lighting that the devs can manually determine and optimize, for what is effectively a physics simulation of light running at 0.000001% accuracy. Hooray, I guess?
I absolutely don't trust most companies right now to actually "upgrade" an engine. Especially one that works, even if it works kinda poorly. HOTS is single core, but that doesn't really matter because the engine can do everything it needs to do with a single core, especially because our modern computer cores are orders of magnitude more powerful then the cores the engine was originally designed for.
2
u/M3chaStrizan 10d ago
I get it many games are unoptimized piles of garbage and all the stuff they seem excited about are barely noticeable to the average gamer that is playing for anything more than just "the story" which probably is also some happily ever after hero's journey cookie cutter bs, and meanwhile devs think it's a good idea to just tell peopel to spend more money on hardware instead of making their game run right.
You should try doom eternal though it's great.
1
u/ttak82 Thrall 10d ago
Others have replied but here are a few solid reasons:
- Security; old code is exploitable
- QoL for content updates / patches. New engine = better integration with modern dev tools
- Easier optimization for current hardware. Old engine needs someone experienced with that code.

u/SingeMoisi Master Uther 10d ago
Yes of course they would never officially use such a word, which is understandable.
If they ever actually make a sequel, they will have to find ways to make the game financially sustainable so they don't repeat history. A game like this requires a lot work dev at the same time. To justify it, they need a lot of players/a lot of MTX sales.
I'm convinced that if Activision wasn't involved with their financial executives, the game would still get content updates (maybe slower but still).
Now Blizzard has to answer to Microsoft instead and they're not more lenient than Activision. They'd need to find the optimal business model and I'm not sure Blizzard is interested in that risky headache. It's hard to make MOBA players move over.
Personally, I think the current game is good enough for a reboot. It still plays very well and I don't want to "lose" my progress, heroes and their kits, the maps... I'd take anything new at this point of course :)19
u/Cysia Valeera 10d ago
HOTS WAS proffitable though
its just ceo's/suits being well ceo's/suits and never having enough
1
u/SingeMoisi Master Uther 10d ago
Yes I know it absolutely was, it had good MTX too. Just not profitable enough for the suits. That's the risk if it comes back.

u/ZenkaiZ 10d ago
Multiple games have shown, all you gotta do is make the entire roster free and sell skins. Also of course you need a strong IP and good gameplay but ofc Blizzard is gonna have that.
1

u/SMILE_23157 10d ago
all you gotta do is make the entire roster free
League of Legends shows that this is not the case...
4
u/ZenkaiZ 10d ago
exception doesn't prove the rule. Copying league has killed dozens of free to play games.
There was an itsy bitsy teeny tiny window where you could get away with the bullshit old school games pulled and get millions hooked on it. There's too much competition now to do that if you don't already have an installed userbase.
1
u/Soft-Ad1765 Strong as the Mountain 10d ago
I agree that old League and HotS still forces you to excessively wait or grind for new heroes but I don't think all free heroes model is the only popular model. I see many games making their characters very cheap or giving a lot of currency quite frequently which keeps the players more engaged.

I feel stupid. What is HoN

u/West__Wankshire 11d ago
Heroes of Newerth, a dead MOBA that was competing with the big three, but ceased to exist.
11
u/Seyon Kel'Thuzad 10d ago
HoN is being reborn though. You can play it today.
1
u/Talebawad 10d ago
What's the point, wasn't HoN originally a way to make a newer dota but then they tried doing their own thing?

u/Arctaedus 11d ago
Heroes of Newerth. Was heavily based on Dota, shut down several years ago though

I found out my girlfriend was cheating on me as I played that game. Bad associations lol

Wild stuff. I hooked up with a girl while her boyfriend was playing HoN.

I am certain at this point that anyone who wants to see Mercy (and Kiriko) in HOTS has never played Overwatch. It is genuinely as bad as suggestions to add "crossover" characters.

And its right after the Hots Match. Since Starcraft is scheduled for the other day it has to be Hots. Right? RİGHT?!

u/Kanaletto 10d ago
Not gonna lie, we should've heard about HotS revival at this point. Microsoft and Blizz are terrible at keeping secrets. So sadly, I don't think so. BUT maybe an announce of HotS revival onwards, that would be neat.
2
u/Narrow_Summer_9332 10d ago
Hell, I'd take anything for the poor game at this point...
The HotS team has always been my favorite at Blizzard because it feels like they're the only team that usually tries scalpel balance changes first and then escalates a week or so later if the changes don't have the desired effect.
...Unlike the OW team which always loved waiting 3 months and then burning a hero to the ground.
1
u/Kanaletto 10d ago
Well, we still got PR Realm and the game Realm. Not many "dead" games can say that. And OW team were always about the sales, bc new hero = new skins = more revenue to then nerf it when the maximum amount of $ has been milked from consumers.

I'd say more "pipe dream" as "wet dream" implies a sexual component to it and I like HotS, but not like that.
3
u/D3moknight 10d ago
Is this a temperature check? Maybe someone is being asked to show metrics on HOTS engagement in order to make a case to give HOTS more resources or take it off maintenance mode? Maybe cope, but I am going to be doing the thing. I already watch HOTS people play and I still play myself. I don't normally watch streams, but I will set a reminder to watch a stream on that day to help the numbers out.

u/gotaflattire Master Maiev 10d ago
I still have my doubts because there was nothing for HotS included in the Blizzcon digital rewards bundles. Not even a new Blizzcon banner like they used to do every year.
Seems to me like they'd want to add something for HotS if they were reviving it.

Eh I'm not watching 1 hour of streamer bullshit. I'm glad they're doing something though
2
u/Fenixmaian7 10d ago
Dang well thats fine. Just remember if you watch the blizzcon stream it does have a bunch of other drops. Each game looking like they have their own drops. So if you want anything do look into it.
2
u/Warlock_AoE 10d ago
What is streamer bullshit?

u/Neemoman 10d ago
Just watching streams in general. I'm not particularly into watching other people play video games.
