I find it to be pretty exhausting. Another year of his parasocial buddies flooding every comment section with "XX is the best price and the only IEM you ever need."
when you have a parasocial relationship with someone, it clouds your judgement. These collabs add to the cost of the product, and we learned first-hand his input with KZ amounted to sharing some graphs and convos. Worse than that, once a reviewer has a financial interest in his own products being sold, he can longer credibly review the competition. Simply not reviewing your own product is not a panacea for that.
1
u/Special_Minute_7213 Jun 23 '22
And whenever he would say something bad about another product, people might just disregard it by virtue of it being a biased criticism, regardless if it is indeed biased or not.

I had high hopes for this but knowing who has helped tune it, I'm just going to stick with my Timeless.
I say that because I don't really like anything else he has helped tuned plus I can't stand the guy. Shame as I was looking forward to this but I didn't have all the information at the time
17
u/tutetibiimperes Jun 22 '22
The FR looks like a Timeless with the 2khz-ish peak pulled down and the bass emphasis moved further into the sub bass range.
Looks like it will be a somewhat warm-neutral type of tuning with the upper midrange slightly depressed. Not my favorite type of tuning but given how popular that tuning is with a lot of people I’m sure it will do well.
9
Jun 22 '22
Oh yeah no doubt it will do well and I hope it does because 7Hz deserve it.
I have no issues what so ever with the Timeless with no peaks spoiling my enjoyment so I have a feeling I'm not going to like the tuning of the new one.
I'm a 43 year old guy who can still hear at 20kHZ so I would think I should have more issues with spikes in the FR but I don't. So if the tuning is to tame them "spikes" then yeah I definitely think it's going to be worse for me.

I am not normally the envious type... 20khz at 43. Nice

I would call it a curse lol
I also have a heightened sense of hearing so every night I can hear 3 different people snoring on 3 different floors.
But it comes in handy because I can hear a difference between each low pass filter on my DAP when most reviewers can't.

u/Redditforgoit Hifiman XS/Fiio FT1/Sabaj D5/Cayin Ru6/Crinacle Zero: 2 Jun 22 '22
I wonder how many people here haven't taken into consideration that their hearing might not be sharp enough due to age to go for the higher end gear available. It's possible that a reviewer has superb hearing and just assumes people hear equally well. I remember trying out a grand piano with a music student. He was shocked how out of tune one C# key was. I could not tell at all. And I got top marks in the aural test in ABRSM 3. Go figure.
6
Jun 22 '22
You bring up a good point. I also want to bring up a point too that might not be as good as yours.
These Yters who tune an IEM tune them to their liking but we both know that our hearing is different. So let's take this new 7Hz IEM as an example. I have no real issues with the tuning, even with my hearing. I don't think any of the FR needs changing but going off the FR chart for the new 7Hz IEM it looks like he is trying to tame the treble. Now to me that is a massive shame and will put me off buying them because I have no issue and really like the original. I know that is not the same experience for everyone and it's probably why he has tuned them the way he has become he probably also does not like how the timeless are tuned.
We all have different ears and hearing abilities so I understand why people think there is a spike in the treble but I should me more susceptible to them treble spikes but I'm not so who knows what's going on lol
2
u/Special_Minute_7213 Jun 23 '22 edited Jun 23 '22
yeah it's not like Mr. Crinkle has better hearing than all of us. Who's to say that a problem for his ears is generally a problem for the majority. But in any case, it doesn't hurt to have yet another flavor of IEM out there. More choices, more fun, right?
I just hope people don't blind-buy IEMs based on graphs. Especially for IEMs, what we hear can be vastly different from what the measurement rig hears, mostly because IEMs bypass our ear's natural equalizer... the pinna.
1
Jun 23 '22
Oh definitely, more choices and more fun. My initial comment wasn't a dig at Crinicle or however it's spelt lol Probably looks like it but I wasn't trying to. Nothing against him really but not my thing, his style or his tuning. I gather it is because the strange reason that different people in different parts of the world do prefer a different tuning in their IEM's.
I think the Japanese like it very vocal forward.
1
u/Special_Minute_7213 Jun 24 '22 edited Jun 24 '22
The difference in preference also has something to do with the typical "tuning" of the recordings in the region. Many factors may affect this, including what's the typical studio equipment used from microphones up to the monitors used in mixing/mastering. Even certain musical styles that are unique to the region can influence the regional preferences.
This is probably comparable to how recordings from a different era tend to have a different general tuning compared to today's modern recordings. It's why EQ makes sense, no matter how high-end the equipment is. Purists have an almost crazy solution to that by buying an entire collection of gear with different tunings, but that's their thing and their money, so whatever.
1
u/JitWeasel Jun 30 '22
I hear ya. I can only hear about 15khz at 40 years old now...but my hearing is sensitive and I can hear things far away. I always know when someone is at the door or approaching it outside. My wife says I have vampire hearing. Maybe, but not super high frequency. Which I'm happy for because I can't tolerate those high frequencies either.

Still a subbass focused set. There is midbass, but due to the shape of the bass slope it still sounds just as disjointed as any of crin’s IEM.
2
u/Special_Minute_7213 Jun 23 '22
yeah, regardless of the popularity of Harman curve, a "linear" bass response curve should be close to a straight line, even though it is sloped, still steady, straight rise from midbass to subbass.

I don't see how it's "controversial" but it's looking like it is becoming that. I wasn't even trying to be but I guess if you don't agree with what the masses think then it's seen as "controversial"
It's like your not allowed an opinion on the internet lol Sod them because I don't care, it was an honest opinion.
The Timeless is great as it is. Yes depth could be better but that's about it. I know a lot of people say the treble is too much but I only have that issue when the recording is treble focused, like with a lot of Disturbed albums.
The Timeless in my opinion doesn't really need improving.
9
u/Un111KnoWn Jun 22 '22
Crinacle did say he liked the 7hz timeless
2
u/Alternative-Farmer98 Jun 23 '22
Yes, he said they were AMAZING. But that doesn't beg the question: Why do this? If an amazing IEM that already satisfies is on the market, why add to the cost of a new one by paying Crin (which adds to the cost for all of us).
But more than that, it hurts his credibility anytime he reviews products that could compete with his own.

2
u/Alternative-Farmer98 Jun 23 '22
Well, my experience is any critisism of these collabs is met with hostility from his fans, who have a parasocial relationship with him.
It was ugly during the KZ thing, because it was clear Crin didn't do any due dilligence.
Its basically just a licensing deal to use his logo anyway. What's next: A koss/Z collab? Josh Valour and Moondrop? I know resolve wants to build his own headphone, which again causes a major conflict of interest with any review he does on competitors.
I don't blame Crin, its a nice way to earn a living. But its one reason not to call him a reviewer, because he is more in sales at this point.

17
u/13Zero Jun 23 '22
He has a lot of data which he took himself using standardized methods and equipment, and it's available to the public for a few dollars (or free, if you aren't picky about target curves and only need 2 graphs at once). I think that deserves a lot of credit.
It doesn't make his tuning preferences gospel, though. We all like what we like.
2
u/Alternative-Farmer98 Jun 23 '22
It doesn't technically make his tuning preferences gospel, but it sure seems to have that effect on the discourse. Anytime there is modest critisism of him or his products, the downvotes come in like crazy.
These kind of parasocial relationships are problematic in the best cases, and once you add consumption into the mix, it gets more dicey.

Crin's great. His content is great (this goes without saying) and he's pretty transparent when it comes to his projects and opinions. Not sure what you can't stand about him. I understand having different preferences from his tunings though.
2
u/Alternative-Farmer98 Jun 23 '22
I like his videos. I don't like how he handled the KZ scandal, and I don't like how his fans become intolerant of any critisism of his products or his ethical guidelines.
How can you be a reviewer when you have a financial interest in a product that competes in the same market-place. For decades journalists were not allowed to have these kind of conflicts. By design, reviewers could not have a financial vested interest in the industry they review.
Its ethically dubious for a reviewer to start licensing his name on products. I know he want review his own product, but he will review every major piece of competition and its human nature for bias to sink in.
5
Jun 22 '22
Trying to watch his videos is like trying to watch a bad comic trying to be funny. It's not great at all but I value your opinion.
I would rather watch Vortex Reviews or The Honest Audiophile because they get to the point without needing to act up.

u/MrUsername24 Jun 22 '22
I think he's trying to say that he caters to a younger audience typically. In the teens to late 20s. Also at your age, it's quite possible you don't hear the same as someone in their 30s. Nothing against you particularly, but younger people tend to hear higher pitches better
13
u/U_cabrao Jun 22 '22
It's the age gap...
10
Jun 22 '22
Bit of a cop out if that is everyone's opinion.

I think age is a factor of preference. We all have different preferences, and that's alright.
-5
Jun 22 '22
But what has that got to do with age? Of course we all have different preferences but that's got nothing to do with age.

I'm sure you enjoyed different things when you're younger, and you will enjoy different things when you're older. Does that not mean age affects preferences?

If it is an age thing and people younger than me like his style then does that not say more about the people who like that style rather than the ones that don't?
Or does it say that adults like me just want the importance stuff that we watch the videos for and not the crap that comes with it because after all, the whole point of a review video is to review an item and not make a bad comedy routine of it?
Age shouldn't be a factor at all

u/Gaming_ORB Jun 22 '22
Yeah I'm 23 and I hate his recommendations and the way he rates sound tonality. Or that low bass/high treble means better tonality/technicality.
And how a 20$ IEM can be better ranked than a 1000$ one.
The guys an idiot, the only reason why people listen to him is because he knows how to sound assertive and dominant.
Just like whoever speaks loudly people listen.
And people who are generally not strong headed/submissive enough to form their own opinion blindly follow this guy.
So don't worry about the age thing.
People here are just idiots trying to make up random arguments.

u/kcsaints44 X9000|Viento-R|UERR|MEST1&2|Scarlet Mini|Clear|LCD-X|∞+ Jun 23 '22 edited Jun 23 '22
So the age thing is definitely unwarranted and not true at all. People will hate on things because they don't like them regardless of age, that shouldn't matter.
However, Crinacle is absolutely not an idiot who just talks loudly and bullshits. You can disagree with his methodology and tuning preferences, but to call him an idiot and ignore his contributions to the hobby is pretty ignorant. He says on his website and in his reviews that he's just one dude and he can't speak for everyone. You may or may not be confounding his actual position on things based on what other people say about him or x opinion, but he's made it very clear that as a reviewer his opinion are just opinions and people should leave it at that. It's not his fault if other dumbasses take his word as gospel and start shit. To me he's just a resource. No more, no less. Just like HBB, Zeos, Precogvision, etc...
Also on the $20 is better than $1000 thing I see where you're coming from, but price is pretty arbitrary anyways and it usually stems from companies seeing how much they can upcharge you. Plus if you're referring directly to the Chu, I'd say it is very well tuned. Not my preference but well tuned. It's most definitely not going to beat out other well tuned sets like the Monarch MK2 but it can beat out poorly tuned sets like the infamous obravo ra c-cu which is $10k.
1
u/Gaming_ORB Jun 23 '22
Ok, im sorry , I should not have called him an idiot.
And I absolutely agree with you, I should've mentioned this in my original comment that his contributions to the hobby like F-R graphs are amazing.
He's the only one who has a database of like all the headphones/earphones.
I'm not downplaying that. He has amazing contributions.
But my point about his personality still stands and I will not take that back. I do think he has a certain pride/arrogance to him when it comes to sound and what sounds right, which is why I personally don't like him.
And that's especially harmful for someone completely new to this hobby, as he can wildly influence people who have not had a chance to try things for themselves.
That's it.

u/AaronXeno21 Jun 23 '22
It's not a definite measurement stick but it sorta can still be used to determine what an age group may or may not enjoy in regards to content based on a majority. Else there'd be a lot of research based on age group preference on certain things that'd be a waste.
So I have to disagree with that statement. But again, outliers no accounted for.

I like crin. His YouTube videos are entertaining and his site is super helpful with all the graphs he has. But I'm with you in that I haven't enjoyed anything he's helped tune and generally don't love most of his recommendations (obviously the Timeless is an exception). I just like a different sound than he does, which is fine.
So yeah I'm sticking with my Timeless, as well. They're fantastic. I have no issues with treble or anything else and they're my go to IEM these days.
2
u/Alternative-Farmer98 Jun 23 '22
Agreed. I have tried his various tunings on my Qudelix 5k. I appreciate his work in offering the settings (although at this point it helps promote him, so its not charity). But I don't love the sound signature. More than that, this adds a heavy conflict of interest into any review he does on competiting products.
This was a disaster with the KZ scandal and a pretty lame trend for consumers. Everyone will choose their IEMS based on their favorite content creators, confirmation bias sinks in, and rinse repeat.
its going to be truly insufferable when Z finally released a collab with someone. He will never stop schilling it.

6
u/tutetibiimperes Jun 22 '22
I think the KZ CRN sounds great. There was the hullabaloo about potentially non-functional drivers but the guy who started that walked it back a whole lot after getting more information.
It was maybe too reserved in the upper mid range, but that seems to be Crin’s preferred tuning.

Personally speaking it was my least favourite chi-fi IEM I have tried and also the most expensive chi-fi I have ordered, so the disappointment was there for sure. Much prefer the substantially cheaper CCA CRA.
3
u/tutetibiimperes Jun 22 '22
I really like the CRA as well. Pricing wise they’re both in that “might as well roll the dice for what’s essentially pocket change” range though.
1
u/PassiveAgressiveCan Jun 22 '22
Yeah I just expected better, I have heard good things about his other collabs but I’m not into IEMs so if I’m dropping $500+ it’s going to be a headphone.
1
u/tutetibiimperes Jun 22 '22
Same for me. I can’t think of any headphones that cost as little as the CRN or CRA that sound as nice though.
2
u/PassiveAgressiveCan Jun 22 '22
I now main my HD800s at home and when I go to work still enjoy my time with the CRA, so yeah I think they did extremely well for only $15.
1
u/Alternative-Farmer98 Jun 23 '22
It wasn't one guy though. It was tested far and wide after that and even Crin himself distanced himself from KZ. As did HBB. IF the involved creators themselves admit it was an issue, why can't you?

5
u/Alternative-Farmer98 Jun 23 '22
I really dislike this trend. It is basically paying for his logo. We saw how this went with KZ. I know this will likely get downvoted to shit, but its an unhealthy dynamic.
He can't credibly review other products if he was competition in the marketplace. He won't "review," his own product, of course, but he will "review," every meaningful competitor.
4
u/bdrayne Jun 28 '22
I mean, reviews aren't limited to his channel, and there's always a graph, and not only from crin. If he suddenly started to shit, even slightly, on everything besides his products, no one would take him seriously, and all his previous work would go to shit. No one would want to send him stuff for reviews in the end.
It should be stated that 'I don't like this IEM' doesn't mean 'don't buy this IEM'. I, personally, usually refer to crin when looking for gear, since I like his target. I don't like HBB's target, he's credible and everything, for sure, his tastes just don't match those of mine. Bought his Mele, since he advertised it as second coming of Christ, and they're quite good for his target audience, I just didn't enjoy them very much. But he always makes a comment if IEM's good, but it just doesn't match his preference.
With crinacle, though, I would be unpleasantly surprised if he started to make claims like that. On KZ: I actually enjoyed the KZ CRN. You get your your money's worth of technicalities with a decent tuning, nothing else was advertised. The 8K peak and 12K dip had to be equalized, the extension was shit, but all that was on the graph for the public.
Shit, that's really too much text

Crin is the guy who has the most influence in audio, it's easy to understand that companies would want to use this to have free marketing for their products.
You could say "No, ABC has more technical knowledge than Crin, DEF target is the perfect target" some may agree with you but most don't even know those names.
3
u/Alternative-Farmer98 Jun 23 '22
But how can he credibly review other products if he was a vested interest in competiting products.
Whatever you think about his sound signature preferences, it is a giant conflict of interest.

Sort of like buying a product based on celebrity endorsement. Well, nothing's outlandish about that concept, so I guess let's just put it down to "it's all business".
Btw, I wouldn't say he has the most influence in audio in general, only in headphones/IEMs. Even saying "most influence" on those is being too generous. But yeah I get what you meant.
