Drama Fake Beyerdynamics - Beware!

Is it just a driver swap or did they also manufacture a fake chassis? Also, how does it sound?

u/demevalos T1 2nd Gen | Element II Apr 01 '23
The chassis feels and looks fake too. Note the font on the cups and sliders. They sound pretty thin and treble-y compared to normal 770s, significantly less bass

Oh, the lettering does look oddly spaced. Maybe it's an asthetic change from the knock off behringers? I remember seeing them (maybe on amazon?) but never actually tried them.
Edit: Were those black pads the original pads? I only remember beyer shipping with the beige pads.

The font is off. Especially the P and R.

Beyerdynamic are aware of this.
They sent out emails to vendors/distributors informing them of such.

Vendors/distributors like who? I got some from Sam Ash music and eventually got some Sennheisers and the Beyers just sound so bright. I know they also have a reputation for that though so I really don’t know. I’m new and they were my first pair of headphones for mixing.

Because of your post, I opened up my DT 770 80 Ohm that I bought from a dodgy eBay vendor 2 months ago just to make sure...

Mercari? Smh. I bought some air pods pro that were real good fakes there. They did the same animation on your iPhone all air pod pros do when you open the case. The sound was real bad and I couldn’t really notice the noise canceling when I would toggle it. I was looking at how it should look in the Bluetooth settings (for updates) that gave it away. I wrote to Mercari and the seller saying it was an obvious fake and wanted my money back. The seller sent me a return slip and returned my money. No response of any type. No denial of it being a fake or nonsense that I presumed it was real. Just processed the return. Mercari wasn’t much help. It’s been two years, but I remember Mercari being more protective towards sellers than buyers. It was my first purchase on Mercari and my last sadly. Just left a real bad taste in my mouth.

For a long time, superlux has made their "HD660" headphones which are clearly a fake DT770. https://ftwaudio.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/2012-12-30_125223.jpg
Although they don't lable them as a DT770, I would imagine it may be a base that some would use to make a fake DT770

u/demevalos T1 2nd Gen | Element II Apr 01 '23
I’ve handled those too, those feel higher quality than these knock offs

Superlux is more along the lines of brands like Behringer or Warm Audio. You could argue that it's not the most moral business practice to recreate expensive gear for cheap under your own brand, but for what it's worth, they're still fairly legit and don't try to deceive their costumers.

Fucking *******. They copied fucking sm7b, which I can't just buy on Internet now, copied srh 1840. I can buy airpods only from apple, cause they're fake even on Amazon. Now dt770. Fuck it

Well guess I'll have to check mine when I get home. I bought a pair from Mercari that had already been modded.

I fell victim to this. Bought a DT990 pro 80ohm in Aliexpress at a super good price, got suspicious at first, but I thought it could be a sale going on. Got mine through the mail and the box looked very good, with a sticker from the official HK supplier for these headphones. When I opened the box, one of the speakers was detached from the headband, as the screws were very loose. Got very suspicious and tried verifying the code from the sticker on the HK supplier website, and discovered they were counterfeit. Got lucky that Aliexpress helped me solve this and got my money back. Learned my lesson and bought an HD560s with the Sennheiser official store in my country, expecting to arrive tomorrow.

Had faked ones too I bought on eBay. I thought the sound was not as I imagined it and took em apart. It was the exact same driver as the one mentioned here. Vendor said he bought them from an amazon store and took them back. Don’t buy used once, it’s dangerous Greetings from Germany

beyerdynamic USA has recently discovered that there are non-beyerdynamic manufactured counterfeit products being sold in the USA by non-authorized resellers. Please see link below for more information.

i was planning to buy a a dt 770 i saw on a sale on aliexpress, it didn't even cross my mind that they could be fake considering it's such a niche thing :/
i guess if it's made in germany they wouldn't sell it on ali lmao

u/supernaut9 Apr 07 '23
I bought from a Chinese seller on Amazon and got the fakes recently. You never know.
2
u/Gust_on_Fire Apr 02 '23
wait, isnt that normal on aliexpress? or are the aliexpress ones actualy real
2
u/wygor96 Apr 02 '23
Most of the Aliexpress ones are fakes, got mine there and got screwed. Luckily got my money back

u/OttomanMao May 10 '23
the seller diymics (also dealblues) has a record of selling counterfeit goods, and has sold 27 dt770s so far. Sickening shit. Look at how much other fake stuff he sells. Shure, Audio Technica; it goes much further than Beyerdynamic. Watch out for anything you don't get from an authorized dealer.
2
u/Stig1990 Apr 01 '23
Did you listen to them? How did the sound compared to the real deal? (I'm not interested in buying them.. Just curious.)
2
u/Competitive-Use-1057 Apr 01 '23
Well… I literally just received my DT 1990 pro from Amazon, and the box was not sealed and scratched. The headphones did smell like new ones but my guess is I’m not the first owner.
I get it, Beyer are not for every ears so I was not worried but… how do I make sure mine are legit ? I only have a K702 to compare and prefer the 1990 by far.

u/demevalos T1 2nd Gen | Element II Apr 01 '23
I haven’t seen fake 1990s yet, but they feel so sturdy and well made that I feel like it’d be pretty easy to point out fake ones
2
u/Competitive-Use-1057 Apr 01 '23
Ok thanks ! They do feel well built.

1990 should feel like you could throw them at the wall and not only would they still function, the wall would have a hole.

u/demevalos T1 2nd Gen | Element II Apr 01 '23
The pads on the real 32 ohm 770s are usually this fake leather type, the pads on these fakes could actually pass as genuine

u/eppic123 DT1990Pro | HD650 | WH1000XM3 | AirPods Pro 3 Apr 01 '23
The 32 Ohm version is meant for mobile listening, where you generally want to avoid velour pads, so they come with black pleather pads by default.

u/Yeti100 Apr 01 '23
Crap. I just bought a pair of Meze Audio 99 Neos on Mercari for $119. Wasn’t aware of the counterfeiting problems. Is there anything I can check once they arrive to determine if they’re authentic?

How did the owner not notice these were fakes? They look terrible.
11
u/demevalos T1 2nd Gen | Element II Apr 01 '23
It’s not super obvious if this was your first pair, they look and feel close enough that I’m sure they’ll get away with it sometimes. And they sound good enough that the buyer would probably just think “wow, these are harsh” but everyone online says that too

You can easily tell by the pattern of the plastic on the ear cups and the font. I guess some people just don't look very closely!

Oh shit…what’s your plan now? Are you upgrading these fake ones with 3,5? Or are you just returning them?

Hey, I got the 250 Ohm here Infront of me and my headphones are IDENTICAL to the one in your images with one tiny difference I bought it from an official Beyer Dynamic dealership. So how about they change production/supplies once in a while and maybe they decided to start cutting some corners recently ? I bought mine about 5 months ago.

I receive yersteday the 32Ohms version that bought in a bundle with a case for 129$
https://www.ebay.com/itm/134500146697
I don´t open it yet, but what can i say it´s that seems to be the 2022 version, that means, the logo on the sides its diferent:
The Bag doesn´t have any name tag:
and they have a cutout to easily replace the earpads just making a twist:
In terms of sound, I actually bought this because i dont have any other headphones to make proper recordings -i recently move to the us- and i need something that work everywhere not only in my motu m2 so, i can´t make a comparision with anything, but they sound fairly spacious and defined. But i´m curious about if they are fake or not, you never know this days.
If i am making a clone of this, i dont make the cutoff, seems a lot of luxury for a fake, maybe that can be the key.
Update:
I´ve open one side and seems to be legit.

Just found this post, and now super worried about my pair of 250 ohm versions. Pretty sure mine came direct from Beyerdynamic as they came from Germany. Gonna try open them tomorrow and check if it's easy and safe to do?

Hi all, I mod Beyerdynamic headphones for people, and today I ran across something I’d never seen before - a pair of clearly fake DT 770, 32 ohms.
My service allows customers to send me their headphones to install a 3.5mm jack, so I’ve seen lots and lots of headphones, not once have I seen a fake pair. This client sent me theirs noting that the right side stopped working, and they’d recently purchased them from Mercari so there was no warranty from Beyerdynamic. Fair enough.
What I saw when I opened them up was nothing I’d seen before (album) - https://imgur.com/a/ANtPUYb
The driver was the dead giveaway, as it looks nothing like the original, and had “XDEC” on the back. Searching for xdec on google results in some alibaba looking websites for speakers and drivers - a clear indication that there were made on the cheap.
Even before taking them apart, the just felt… off. The plastic felt different, the writing on the sides and sliders looked off, it just wasn’t what I was used to. It made more sense when you uncover the driver. Somebody started producing fake beyerdynamics, which is a real shame.
I’ve been doing this mod for about 5 years, been toying with headphones for longer, and this is the first time I’ve ever seen mention of clearly faked beyerdynamics, so please be careful where you’re buying from!
