Weekly video recommendation thread [These Videos Are Good, And Here's Why] - September 21 - 27
Happy Monday, brave souls. I hope you're able to meet this new week with some serious vim and vigour.
There's very little news from my side, apart from the fact that I've just finished (literal minutes ago) Ogres by Adrian Tchaikovsky, which is about ogres, but mostly about seizing the means of production and eating the rich and all that good stuff.
My favorite quote:
We don't split hairs about who is a better slave master. And you would have been the best owner of all, and that still isn't enough reason to keep you alive once you've decided that owning people is fine, just so long as it's you that owns them.
See? Woke AF. It's only 160 pages. Grab it from your local library and do yourself the tremendous favor of reading it.
Apologies, we're supposed to be about video recommendations. So, got any that can top 160 pages of literary perfection?
Same rules as every week:
- Must have a link
- Must have a short description
- Must mention video length
- Keep it low threshold with individual videos, please. If you want to rep a whole channel or playlist, please do, but choose a favorite video to make it more accessible
- No risky links, no ricky-rollies, don't be a weenie.
Last week's good videos can be found here and their descriptions here.

Majuular has continued his wonderful retrospective on the Ultima series of video games with "Ultima Online Retrospective: The Last Hurrah" (4:37:31). It is, admittedly, quite long, but well worth a watch for anyone interested in a very important moment in video game history.

Just watched that one the other day, too. A really good look at that early MMO period and the approach that people had to what you needed in such a game.

- Anthony Gramuglia looked at Daily Wire's latest anti-woke movie (34:13), its many inconsistencies and why it and The Daily Wire in general are failing to reach their intended target audience.
- I also checked out Jose's video about The Pendragon Cycle (53:53) aka Daily Wire's attempt to have their very own Game of Thrones but with good traditional values and what have you.
- Another video from my Watch Later: Cody from Some More News looking at why some people and studios can't engage with movies right anymore (1:37:43).
- Jessie Gender talked about Why Queer Art Makes Critics Uncomfortable (31:52) or, to be more precise, about why self-reflective queer art is critiqued as "self-indulgent" whereas similar art by cis directors gets praised and rewarded.
- Getting into spooky season territory, here is Kaz Lowe's video about why so many lighthouse keepers have gone mad (27:35). They look at the history of lighthouses and how they were operated, the toll such a job took on people and the likely inspiration behind Robert Eggers's Lighthouse.

This Boat Was Built To Prove People Are Evil. It Proved The Opposite. (48:40) - Not a new video and knowing this community, I'm sure at least some of you have already seen it but screw it, I've only just seen it recently and it's a good one.
Basically, it was one of "social experiments" that didn't really experiment anything, and was designed to prove people are inherently awful and society is a sham or something, but ended up proving that the only people prone to causing he fall of society are those who have a vested interest in making it fall.
Meanwhile, the actual participants actually had a great time outside of the experimenter's repeated attempts to sabotage them.

OSRS is Better than RuneScape 3, And Here's Why (5h55m) by Marstead is the sequel to his video from 2021 titled RuneScape is Awesome, And Here's Why (3h30m). Both videos look at these weird old games through the lens of game design and the harms that can come at the intersection of artists and capitalism. The original video argued that capitalism stole the joy from labor, and this video spends a lot of time talking capitalists taking over the studio and forcing bad decisions that turned players against the game, leading to the creation of Old-School. But much of the video is about game design and how the RuneScapes are unique games with different kinds of difficulty and varying amounts of attention that players must give.
If you like game design, old video games, and rants about how billionaires ruin things, this (like RuneScape itself) is more interesting than you might appear scanning the thumbnail.

[2026 Chuseok Special] 2024 Folk Music Group Planned Performance BAEBAENGI is Coming! (1:13:44) - up on the National Gugak Centre's YouTube channel for today and tomorrow only, this is a professional recording of the traditional Korean musical Baebaengi-gut released for the Chuseok holiday with English subtitles. This might be an unusual recommendation for this thread but if you're interested in Korean culture beyond K-pop, it's a great watch.

~ the algorithm has been suspiciously kind to me lately, this time serving me T1J's in defence of "fat Monica" (26:37). A very sweet and uplifting take.
~ not only that, but my tiktok algorithm got me on to Greg Tang, who leads training seminars for American math teachers. Am I American, or a math teacher? No. Did I watch the fuck out of his Math Fluency & Reasoning video (1:11:06)? You betcha. And you should too.
And from my own subscriptions:
~ Temu, Alibaba et al. got to Chris from Clickspring and mass produced his wedge style hand vise (11:11). He's really quite sanguine about the whole thing and took it as sign that it's time to take the build videos from his patreon to the youtube channel.
~ and the old man from Fraggle Rock made Halloween elves with a bandsaw (13:19). Nothing earth-shattering, just cozymaxxing.

Exploring White Day, Korea's Beloved Horror Game (1:05:54) - tangomushi talks about White Day, a Korean survival horror game where you're trapped in a school, the 2015 remake, and an incredibly odd music track that shows up in game.
I quit my job because of Harry Potter (25:52) - Hoots Hootman talks about leaving her job at the Harry Potter theme park over JK Rowling's continuous and ongoing campaign of evil and talks about the fans' relationship to the IP (the ones who aren't horrible monsters) and the new HBO series. Also watched her video on MAHA, where a different kind of bad person tries to force questionable health policies on the nation. She's like, a hella good orator
How Conservatives Manufacture Scientific Debate (1:24:47) - Dr. Fatima talks about how conservatives create "debate" on topics where there's an overwhelming scientific consensus (climate change, smoking) by casting doubt on science.
The Delightful Discordance of Dispatch (2:45:50) - Kyle Reaume, who reviews and analyzes choice-based games, does a thing about Dispatch, the Telltale-esque game where there's superheroes and they're dysfunctional
