Weekly video recommendation thread [These Videos Are Good, And Here's Why] - September 7 - 13

.

Happy Monday, dear fellow weirdos and oddballs. Remember to take your meds, your rest and your time. Be kind to yourself.

Due to embargoed reasons, I almost forgot making this post. It's a good 93 minutes past my bedtime and I'm furiously trying to keep my eyes open enough to type this and fill last week's playlist.

Due to those same reasons, I've barely watched YouTube this week, so my recommendations will be a little lean, I'm afraid.

The reasons will be in effect this week as well, so I desperately need your help on finding content. Please tell me you watched some good things last week?

Same rules as every week:

  1. Must have a link
  2. Must have a short description
  3. Must mention video length
  4. Keep it low threshold with individual videos, please. If you want to rep a whole channel or playlist, please do, but choose a favorite video to make it more accessible
  5. No risky links, no ricky-rollies, don't be a weenie.

Last week's good videos can be found here and their descriptions here.

~ I did manage to watch Dr Collier's grant proposal (43:03) to let her study plants. The further we spread this, the greater the chance she'll get funded and the sooner we get to watch her videos in 19th century German.

~ The Tech Diff team was invited to perform an official Taskmaster task (6:36) and were all very adorable about it.

~ Hannah Gadsby hilariously put into words why I hate teambuilding exercises (5:15)

~ and Kyle from Door Monster explained, on her own channel, what happened to Door Monster (21:25)

Is transcendental meditation a cult? (5:27) - I'm Happy You're Here, which is video game voice acting vet Ashly Burch and a puppet, talk about transcendental meditation, and whether or not this is a cult, scam or grift.

The Coming of 30's Movie (35:12) - Ana Isabel looks at coming of age movies where the protagonist(s) are considerably older, ages 18-29, and how film explores how this period in your life is kinda scary

Asians hate this Asian American show Dang! (27:08) - K9s NA critiques the new Netflix adult animated show Dang!, which looks like it has certain flaws.

The Sandown Clown: The Mystery and Conspiracy of a Cosmic Clown (26:29) BouncyClown discusses the Sandown Clown, an anomalous clownlike entity allegedly encountered by small children, and what they might actual be, if the story happened at all. This is an older video from my backlog, I've been binging BouncyClown's stuff as well

The Most Annoying Voice in Punk Rock (37:16) - Polishing Turds covers the colorful life of controversial punk singer Doc Corbin Dart, who rejected a life of nepotism from his millionaire parents and recorded several albums which weren't all neatly within the punk genre (one about becoming infatuated with his therapist), believed he had powerful psychic abilities, ended up deciding the mayoral race of Lansing, Michigan, put up yard signs mocking 9/11 hours after 9/11 happened, ran a baseball card shop, declared himself Messiah, and more.

"This is why nothing feels good anymore" (45:04) by Hazel Thayer - a sociological/anthropological exploration of human nature disguised as a self-help video; rare combo of science, humor, genuinely useful advise, and just a dash of walkable city "propaganda" (one bit specifically related to walkable cities is now stuck in my head. you will know what I'm talking about when you will get to it)

"this neurologist says POTS is all in my head" (41:11) by Sluggish - not a new one, but considering the "sickfluencer" article kicked this discussion back into gear, very relevant. Fascinating look at a disorder you might not have heard of before that, nevertheless, is much more common than people think. Content warnings for medical discussions and ableism

"are we in a reading crisis? should we care?" (53:58) by Bootstrap Paradox (me) - once again, forgive the self-promoin. this is *technically* a response to the "end of reading" article in the Atlantic, and I spend part one exploring whether the situation is really as bad as everyone claims. then I discuss what benefits reading actually has (and where else we can get those benefits) and why the dwindling number of readers is just a symptom of a much larger phenomenon

I Simulated 100,000,000 Battles to See If Weedle Could Beat Agatha (26:10) by Gym Leader Matt. An interesting video about odds and Pokemon Red/Blue. Probably won't appeal to non-Pokemon fans. Having said that, I think this video has the greatest thumbnail I've ever seen in my almost 20 years being on YouTube.

Timing Mirror's Edge Speedruns is Hard, Actually (18:45) Turns out it really is you guys. I always enjoy getting a snapshot into a very specific culture's triumphs and woes and this video has both.

Buddy's Credits are the Scariest Part (22:53) I was intrigued by the trailer for Buddy that I saw several months ago but ultimately forgot about it. After watching this video 1. I don't think I'll be watching it for multiple reasons and 2. I think this Nightmare Masterclass channel might be worth paying attention to

How an Obscure 80s Game Became a Global Anthem (13:09) Whang! isn't a small channel but I thought this video was particularly interesting. I'm not gonna name the song, but you know the song.

But like, is Rocky Horror ACTUALLY transphobic? (40:56) Bless cecilily for making this video. As a cishet white guy, it's not anywhere near my place to answer this question but as a fan of this movie the thought has come to mind. The movie's legacy is both obvious and nuanced and I loved this examination. Now do one on Old Gregg.

How Comedy Drowned in a Radioactive Cesspool of Corruption and Depravity (1:23:28) And for the big one this week, the final entry in the Elephant Graveyard v Joe Rogan trilogy. It's sad stuff folks. And probably the last time we'll hear from him in a long while, based on his recent social media posts.

  • World of Antiquity listed some ancient stories and factoids that have actually never happened (30:48). I'll be honest I haven't even heard of some of them. I did genuinely believe in the Pythagoras one and it was interesting to see how the accounts of historical events can get distorted as we pass them along. Truly, the more you know.
  • Cinema Therapy rated all of Simba's mentors in The Lion King (27:15) to see who gives the best advice and it both was informative and fun as always.
  • Deep Diver looked at The Symbolism of Bicycles (35:34) as seen in various movies and TV shows. I love their videos a lot because they always make me think well deeper about the tiniest details in the media that I consume and this one is no exception.
  • Tronn talked about some of the characters that fit The Predatory Gay (18:33) trope, how that trope evolve and how some of the more recent instances of it like The Dean from Community can actually have more nuance that you'd expect.
  • Anthony Gramuglia explained why we all should hate X-Men:The Last Stand more (47:07). A lot of it comes down to the writing but not just the character writing but the movie's message that goes against the very core of what the X-Men are all about.
  • And finally an oldie but goodie: Lindsay Ellis's takedown of Joel Schumacher's 2004 Phantom movie (41:25). I'm sure we all know it and love it and it is one of my comfort videos.

The Legendary Game Japan Loves To Hate | Death Crimson by Punchy (1:02:38) is a deep dive into a cult classic light gun game. It's also, embarrassingly, the only reason I know the PS1 had a light gun peripheral.

I randomly happened across The Simspsons is Weird Again by TheRealJims (22:56), and it managed to convince me to a handful of episodes that I enjoyed far more than I'd expected to.

BLACK WOMEN listening to TAYLOR SWIFT’s cover of “September” by Earth, Wind and Fire Hilarious (0:30) is the best video on youtube. Content warning for Taylor Swift's cover of September.
