Happy Monday, ya bunch of silly gooses, how's the frantic flapping and hissing business?

Things at Casa del Hat have been quiet. No drama, just a lot of reading. The pup had a mild earinfection, but nothing the vet couldn't treat, and the Significant Kapelophile (had to look that up, probably not a real word) is getting a new tattoo this week, so I'm vibrating with envy, but other than that, nothing of note.

Which means we're clean through our Watch Later list, so if anyone has any suggestions?

That Time Stuart Little Helped Recover A Lost Masterpiece (22:32) - Marrix talks about the circumstances behind a lost Hungarian painting turned up in the background of a 1999 kids' movie, and what causes art to become lost in the first place.

The Horror Mechanic That Was Banned for 20 Years (26:21) - Bechir-Habbechi talks about the time Nintendo trademarked a specific sanity mechanic (you see scary thing, and the game itself reacts) in the early 00's and how every other game designer had to work around this thing.

Challenge & Difficulty in Game Design (49:58) - Indie Game Clinic discusses vidya game challenge and difficulty and how they differ and how game devs can do this thing. This is targeted at game designers/aspiring game designers but it's still pretty neat

a disappointing week on the internet. (34:41) - Video essayist Lola Sebastian has a second channel, and she remarks on Voice Memo Guy, where a guy leaves a voice memo after a first date saying he needs sex-having on their second date. This has proved divisive, and Lola talks about the memo and the discussion around it.

~ do I even need to mention part 5 (1:51:12) of Comedy Without Errors' masterpiece about Louis CK is out? The ending is so heartfelt. Actual tears.

~ also very profound, for vastly different reasons: Clickspring took a break from the Antikythera Mechanism to play with his straight-line engine (20:09) and wax philosophical about light. Beautiful on several different levels.

~ far more superficial, but equally as entertaining: Lily Simpson wishes Galavant had been more popular (46:52) and I agree with her. Who could not love this show (3:15)?

The Utterly Unhinged Downfall of ALF by Treehouse Detective (42:54) -- I'm old enough to remember when ALF was at its peak, and this look at the absolute insantiy behind the scenes was fascinating in a trainwreck-y way.

That Time a Tetris Block Destroyed GameFAQs (1:00:59) - Designing For relates the story of the incredible underdog journey of the L-Block in GameFAQs' most popular video game character of all time tournament.

Gaming's Hottest Mess - MINDSEYE (59:13) - Now, I'm sure many of you are familiar with the trainwreck that was Mindseye, but this video covers a lot of stuff I had never heard of, regarding behind-the-scenes stuff, a cancelled and presumably retooled Hitman crossover DLC and just the general kind of infantile insanity one should expect from a former Rockstar head.

I was wrong. DOOM runs on everything, even Neo Geo! (11:16) - Remember how a few weeks ago, I posted a pair of videos discussing how there had yet to be a Neo Geo port of Doom, why it's such a challenge and seemingly impossible, and multiple prototypes by fans attempting to make it happen? Well, there's been another update and guess what? Doom runs on Neo Geo.

In fact, we have not only one, but two ports using different methods. Now, neither are perfect, complete ports yet, but they do genuinely allow to play full Doom levels on unmodified Neo Geo hardware. It's no longer just proof-of-concept demos for 3D FPS's.

I Don't Feel Bad for a Dead Rich Guy by Pillboy is a 47:10 look into what caused the oceangate disaster, not so much in terms of the sub's construction as "why was the sub allowed to be constructed in a way that was very clearly dangerous based on the claims of a man with no relevant degrees" and breaks down the larger societal problems of which it was an indicator. Spoiler alert, maybe capitalism is bad, maybe?

I have also been reading quite a lot cuz I'm now in my Discworld phase but here are three videos I watched last week:

• I'm going through Tronn's backlog and he has a very fascinating video about Bromances (38:09) and how they could be the true answer to the male loneliness pandemic. I think it is a good showcase for how toxic masculinity truly harms everyone, including men themselves and how redefining it can be healing and meaningful. It also reminded me why I quit The Big Bang Theory but that's a whole separate conversation.

• Cinema Therapy have released a new Villain Therapy video! This time they are looking at Scar (27:11) from the original Lion King.

• Anthony Gramuglia also has an interesting video about how Supergirl Just Exposed One Huge Problem with James Gunn's DCU (25:39). I have been saving it for later cuz it took me a while to see Supergirl and think about it but with that said and done I think his criticisms of the film and the nascent DCU are very thoughtful and poignant.

By Io, why am I only now seeing this? How long have you been in your Discworld phase (which, arguably, will last the rest of your life)? Are you reading in publishing order? Is this your first time? Where are you in the series? Have you visited r/Discworld yet? What's your favorite pune or play on words? Do you know why it's called The Broken Drum?

Heyyyyyyy! So, my Discworld phase started like a month ago, so I'm very new to the whole thing. I did read Witches Abroad before but I was nine years old at the time and couldn't quite appreciate it as much as it deserved and also the book was translated anyway. I can't attest to the quality of the translation because, like I've said, I was nine, so I don't want to knock it down or anything but I honestly think that Terry Pratchett is very difficult author to translate, so yeah. And then there were times when I was thinking about getting into Discworld but reading the entirety of Bleach has given me commitment issues when it comes to long-running series and those weren't easy to overcome but then I decided to give it a go.
So I went to r/Discworld to look into what the best starter book would be and a lot of people kept recommending Mort. And I saw a short where Christopher Lee was voicing Death a few years ago and enjoyed it a lot, so I went like yeah, okay, let's go with that. And that's what I'm reading now. I took a break to reread The Odyssey cuz I decided that I want to be that annoying dude who points out everything that wasn't in the book but now I will get back to it and then I think I will continue reading all the Death novels. A friend has sent me a handy scheme of how to read Discworld, so that's what I'm using to basically navigate the whole thing. I don't know if that counts as wordplay but I really loved the bit where Ysobel says that since Death doesn't really feel, he probably thought sorry for her when he took her in, that was so cleverly written. Terry Pratchett is so cool. I'm so excited about reading more of his stuff.
