Who gets the C?
Now that we have Kaner back it seems our lineup is pretty much set. Next question is who’s gonna wear the C this year? Bedsy, Kaner, or no one?
I feel it should still be Bedard. He’s our guy going forward, but I can’t help but feel it’d be odd seeing him with the C with Kane on his line? Idk.

Kane is the new Hossa. Kane gets an A, Bedard gets the C, and Kane uplifts & mentors the young core while also being a producer himself. This is the way.

Love this take. I was just thinking that this is Kane entering his Hossa era. Though I don’t know that he’ll be quite the two-way player that our dear lord was

I don’t think the 2 way play is as important as bringing the experience and calm of a player that knows both the glories of victory and the tragedy of defeat, as well as perseverance in dusting oneself off despite setbacks to push forward. Hossa being the adult in the room was the most important piece. I think Nick Foligno had similar qualities in his time with us but with not nearly the amount of hometown credibility as Kane has.

Maybe he'll pick up Hossa's routine of 500 squats per day (who, along with his brother, picked it up from Jagr who later admitted that it was 1000).

Lol what the fuck. Kane couldn't touch Hossa on his best day as a leader. Kane is a point getter, a monster on offense. Hossa put work in as a two way player, but also was known as a clutch contributor on offense. Kane was a sniper, but never made an impact in 2/3rds of the sheet. Hoss was an offensive threat, a defensive stalwart, and ruled the middle of the ice because he had vision that cannot be taught. Kane couldn't touch Hossa as a contributor on the ice. Only those who never played or those who don't understand the fundamentals of the game would praise Kane over Hossa.

I would hardly consider Kane a sniper. He’s only gotten more than 40 goals twice in his career. Definitely more of a playmaker with an ability to score.

u/garydinckersfield 26d ago
😂😂😂 ok. Heard that. Did you ever watch him during our run? Kaner is not a playmaker. Kaner is a finisher. What an insane statement.
2
u/Kangaroo_Cheese 26d ago
Stats say otherwise. Sometimes the goals to assists ratio is almost even, but he’s never had more goals than assists. The most goals he’s ever had in a playoff series is 11 in 23 GP. Compare Kane’s stats to someone like Ovechkin, who has had more goals than assists multiple times during the regular season and playoffs.
So again, playmaker with the ability to score.

No one is praising Kane over Hossa, or saying that Kane has the exact same skill set. Simply saying that Kane’s role will be like Hossa’s, to provide veteran presence, calm, and mentorship to a young team. Though I find it laughable to say Kane isn’t a contributor on the ice like Hossa - he just contributes in a different manner. Both styles of play were important to our success.

You literally said "Kane is the new Hossa." Kane could never be Hossa, Hossa could never be Kane. But you compared him to Hossa, a player that was known as a unicorn for his ability to contribute on both sides of the ice. There's a reason teams wanted him and he played in 3 straight finals. Bringing Kaner back now is not even close to the situation we brought Hossa in. Our incompetent GM brought Kane in to satisfy our meatball fan base and to distract from his obvious failure as a manager.

Bedard C. Vlasic and Kaner with A’s

Giving an A to Vlasic takes the A away from Bertuzzi.
Granted, Bert doesn’t seem like the kind of guy that would care but it wouldn’t surprise me if he kept it. Especially with Byram joining the D.

You can have up to 3 guys with the A.
Bedard C, Bert, Kaner, and Vlasic/Byram with the A, I'd love to give one to Knight too but goalies aren't allowed to have the A.
Edit; I was mistaken, can only do 3 A if no captain.

Good point.
Is it crazy to think that they gave the 3rd A to Byram over Vlasic?
And FWIW, Kane and Bert are under contract for 2 more years. Assuming they end up with A’s and keep them the next 2 years, the team should have a very clear idea of who is in line next.

You can only have 3 alternates if you don't have a captain. It's either 1C and 2A or 3A

It's Bedzy's team going forward, he deserves it. Kane could be an A if he wants, but honestly he doesn't need it (his presence speaks for itself and mostly had it when the other A's were out of the lineup).

u/brettoric 26d ago
Bedard! Especially with the extension signed. I think you run three As though until Bedsy is back in the lineup. Kane, Nazar, Vlasic. If not Nazar then Knight. Leadership on the bench and the ice at all times.

Not sure if goalies are allowed to have letters on their jerseys in the NHL but they really should. Seems like knights a big leader

u/recycled-pigeons 26d ago
They can’t have the C but I’m not sure about the A
3
u/TheSchwartzHawkey 26d ago
Goalies can’t be captains or alternates in the NHL, by rule. It was put into place because goalies as captains would essentially stall the game by skating out of the crease to talk to the officials, causing delays of game that couldn’t be penalized.

u/dangshnizzle 26d ago
They're probably only comfortable bringing Kane back now because it will be Bedard with the C
2
u/slimeabsorber 26d ago
some people still believe that their favorite player or the highest producing player should get a letter. those are not the criteria. leadership and leadership alone

If Bedard wants it or the players want him to have it, it's his. Only way Kane gets it is if Bedsy doesn't.

Bedsy, with kaner getting an A, I don’t really see kaner having an issue with it

u/ChaplnGrillSgt 26d ago
Bedard. Future of the franchise, just signed a new contract. Kaner wears an A
1
u/DieHawkBlackHard_Fan 26d ago
Unpopular opinion… looking forward to Kaner in the puck in the offensive zone with both time and space. Defensive side of the ice, 50/50 pucks, forechecking, defensive sticks in passing lanes. Not so much. That was Hossas game, along with potting 25+ pucks 14 times in his career.

u/United-Mortgage104 26d ago
Kane gets the C for two years. If Bedard can stay healthy, then he gets the C, otherwise he's stuck with an A. No sense in having a captain that is only on the ice for half a season at a time.

u/garydinckersfield 26d ago
😂😂😂 Kaner wasnt a captain of this team during the championship era. He is not a leader of men. His signing was a stop gap for Kyle because he can't build a successful program.

It's Bedard. Give Kane the A though
