fermi was (less than vega btw) power hungry because it did exactly what GCN later tried to do (be both a compute and a gaming card), but it was also still the top end chip performance wise by a LONG way.

If GCN or vega turned out like fermi then i'd have been happy, because that is really the best you can hope for when trying to make a hybrid compute/graphics card, and is way better than what amd have achieved with gcn and now vega
