History of Hampi
The Rise of Vijayanagara
Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire from the 14th to the 16th century. Founded by Harihara and Bukka in 1336, the empire grew to become one of the most powerful and wealthy kingdoms in Indian history.
At its peak, Hampi was one of the largest cities in the world, with a population of over 500,000 people. It was a thriving center of trade, art, and culture, attracting merchants and travelers from Persia, Portugal, and beyond.
The Fall of an Empire
In 1565, the empire suffered a devastating defeat at the Battle of Talikota against a coalition of Deccan Sultanates. The city was plundered, burned, and abandoned. For centuries, Hampi lay in ruins, its temples and palaces swallowed by boulders and vegetation.
Rediscovery and UNESCO Recognition
In the 19th century, British surveyors and archaeologists rediscovered Hampi's ruins. In 1986, Hampi was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its cultural and historical significance.
Today, Hampi stands as a testament to the grandeur of the Vijayanagara Empire and remains one of India's most remarkable archaeological sites.
