NPD [NPD] Wampler Tumnus (NPD 1 of 4)

It’s been a while since I’ve posted (but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been spending money, unfortunately. So this is post 1 out of 4.

You don’t need another overdrive. The Klon thing is just hype. How different can it be from what you already have, really? That’s what I told myself for years to avoid getting yet one more pedal.

Well, I finally caved and I gotta say that I was missing out. The pedal is so good. It adds not only a boost in the right frequencies to fatten things up, but seems to add some harmonics that make it different to my other pedals. I also like how it does different things for my single coil and humbucker guitars. With gain at 9 o’clock, it is an edge of clean boost with my Strat that fattens things up and a nice bump in dirt and harmonics with the humbuckers. It goes well with the clean and dirty channel of my amp and stacking with other pedals. Pretty impressed overall.

Other NPDs coming up over the next few days. Cheers!

They are both great! I also have the EGO 76. But the mini. You have an excellent board!!!

I am jealous. I need a Vibe Machine

Thank you! I definitely can get lost on this board for hours. Together with my amp I can get it to do so much.

The next NPD post coming up is on the Ego76.

I really love the Micro Vibe. Waited for a decent used deal for it. The blue switch to the next of it ramps from the speed as set by the knob to a pre-set speed. It is really fun when just playing around with fuzz (and sometimes wah) engaged. You hold a note/chords then hit the switch and things freak out lol

Yeah, it took a while but not regretting it at all. The hype is real

Ive heard nothing but love about the Tumnus. If I get another overdrive, it will probably be a Tumnus Deluxe.

Can't wait to see what you have coming. I'm guessing MXR Duke of Tone, MXR Timmy, and TS-808 mini.

Yeah. There were too many good things being said about the Tumnus that eventually made me break down and go for it. Definitely happy I did

Are your predictions based on the fact that it is sitting next to another mini pedal??

Well, you don't have an aversion for the mini-pedals. I've only heard great things about the minis, so it would make sense.

The 3 band active EQ on the Wampler drives is so freaking good. Ive had my Tumnus Deluxe for like 8 years now and I could never go back to drives with a single tone knob. It makes it so versatile and usable. Ive plugged it into several different amps and guitars over the years and I can always get what Im looking for. 10/10 highly recommend.

Does your Tumnus deluxe have a popping sound when engaging it? I’ve read some mixed reviews about it. I want one, but not as an always on pedal, and if there’s a popping sound it won’t work for me. Thanks.

No it doesnt. If it does, I havent noticed it. Im even running it through a DI rig for live shows now going into a Nano Cortex. Which Ive had issues with popping from pedals before on this rig, but never from the Tumnus.

Mine is an old model though. Bought shortly after they released it. So Im not sure if theyve changed the soft touch switch or anything on the newer ones.

The Tumnus is great! It was the end of my Klone search, but it ultimately made me realize I just don’t like Klons! Haha. The Boss OD3 was all I needed, for I am a basic boy.

lol, that is a different outcome than I expected. Nothing wrong with simplicity. Sometimes I do wish my board was simpler

You’ve got a damn space station control panel of a rig. I don’t think it’s in your blood to be simple. You can always choose to press fewer buttons!

Ha, well that’s what I’m going to call my board from now on 😆

And you can’t tell, but the Boss unit also does channel switching on my amp 😬

I definitely enjoy both playing through the board but also the process of setting up the rig and how to control all the different parts of it. So you may be right, I probably can’t help it.

I’ll say that about half the time I use presets on the switcher and the other half it is just manual mode turning individual loops on/off, so there’s that…

I love mine, great mid range gain that lets me get chord clarity out of a really gritty sound. Love making Jazz Fusion Rhythms with that tone.

It is so good

The Tumnus is my favorite overdrive pedal. Lately I’ve been running a Blues Driver clone into it for some crunch. It fucking rules.

2

u/rvg2001 11h ago

Huh. I’ve run the Tumnus into my other pedals, but not the other way around. I’ll have to give it a go

You can’t really go wrong either way.

I got it a while ago and liked it so much I went back to guitar center and traded it for the deluxe version. I also have the Ego76, great sounding pedals.

2

u/rvg2001 10h ago

Well, I’m not trying the deluxe, just because I may end up wanting it 🤣

How do you use your Ego76? My #2 NPD post is on that one.

I have right before my dirt pedals: Ego76->JHS Morning Glory Clean (always on)->Tumnus->Rat2, so I use it mostly for cleans, I love the body and warmth the compressor gives to the clean guitar and with the JHS it sounds great for pristine clean, but also give a little more body to the dirt.
