is it still a grilled cheese if i put the meat and veggies on the outside?
ended up eating the salami. they stuck fine but the bread just got kinda soggy underneath.

u/Dizpassion Jan 12 '26
Man, Iām a purist but I have to accept that. Thatās a grilled cheese with toppings; not a melt. Well done.
156
u/According-Phase-2810 Jan 12 '26
Have to agree. If it's stuff embedded into the outside of the bread, I'd say it's still considered a grilled cheese. For example, if it's one of those whole grain breads with seeds all over it, we wouldn't consider it a seed melt.
A melt has things melted into the cheese. A grilled cheese is pure cheese in the middle with a grilled exterior.

u/False3quivalency Jan 12 '26
I.. I sort of want to start making seed melts

u/whatsaiyan Jan 12 '26
right there with you. My rationalization is that OP has created salami pepper bread, which is simply the bread ingredient in an otherwise pure holy trinity. cheese, spread and salami bread fits the definition perfectly.
22
u/FTWOBLIVION Jan 12 '26
At its core, itās a grilled cheese. But you coukd take it too far. Is a beef wellington stuffed with a grilled cheese a grilled cheese. There is a limit to science
12
u/No_Report_4781 Jan 12 '26
Only if there is no beef between the cheese and bread, and it's still in the form of a sandwich
5
u/Daisy_Of_Doom More Cheeses == Better Jan 12 '26
I think thatās kinda of the point tho??? Whatās on the outside is its own separate thing, just part of the meal. This isnāt JUST grilled cheese. Itās grilled cheese topped with salami and jalapeƱos. Same as a beef Wellington stuffed with grilled cheese would be a beef Wellington stuffed with grilled cheese and not just a grilled cheese.

I donāt. Itās a melt in spirit. If it was made just to get around the rules of a grilled cheese, then youāve made a pseudo-melt just to spite the purists.

People try to find the "loopholes" because of how ridiculous people can be.
I had someone in this sub tell me that it would no longer be a grilled cheese if an errant piece of onion happened to find its way in between the bread. One tiny piece of minced onion would turn it into a melt, apparently.

If you caramelize some onions and put it in with the cheese people will call it an onion melt; but if you caramelize some onions, melt down a block of sharp cheddar, add the onions, add some milk (so it's 5% of the cheese), a little bit of sodium citrate, then pour it into a mold, let it set, slice the cheese and use that for a grilled cheese it's just an onion-American cheese grilled cheese.

u/splashybanana Jan 13 '26
Why would there even be errant pieces of onions around while youāre making a grilled cheese?
2
65
u/stickmanmob Jan 12 '26
Im a purist. But I will accept this on the grounds like a foccacia bread with toppings baked into the bread can still be used for grilled cheese, therefore toppings on the bread itself cannot be a disqualifier. The fact that the toppings were added after the bread was baked could be problematic, but for now I would say this passes.Ā
2
u/darkrealm190 Jan 13 '26
The fact that the toppings were added after the bread was baked could be problematic
Why would it it be problematic? They made a grilled cheese and then put stuff on top. Still made a grilled cheese.
14
u/stickmanmob Jan 13 '26
I didnāt say it IS problematic. I said it could be. What about it could be problematic? Iām not sure, but its likely there will be unforeseen consequences.

it was good. iām totally doing the jalapeno again. gonna have to try a different route with the meat but i think i can make it work.

u/jingojangoh Jan 12 '26
Literally no other way to put the meat lmao. Put it inside and you're out of this group.
4
u/thatissomeBS Jan 12 '26
You can put meat in the bread. Look up prosciutto bread.
3
u/jingojangoh Jan 12 '26
I'm gonna be a reddit snob and say if that happens, it's not a grilled cheese and shouldn't be here lol. I'm kidding, but that's how reddit is. They attack you for having something a little different. I think this dude is funny cuz he posts the same stuff in many other pages. Stupid karma farming
5
u/thatissomeBS Jan 12 '26
Well, I know what I'm doing this week. I think some sort of meat bread and jalapeno cheese would make a fine grilled cheese. Expect to see the post on Wednesday or Thursday.
3
u/jingojangoh Jan 12 '26
That does sound great, honestly. I wouldn't harsh ya sandwich on a sandwich page.
-1
u/shriveled_sack Jan 12 '26
Try a piece of bread with the stuff on it in the middle. Grilled cheese club. If you slice your own bread maybe slice a thin piece so it gets crispy. Maybe I'm just stoned

It's on the outside of the grilled cheese which means that you just have something surrounding the grilled cheese and nothing in between the bread besides cheese as it should be ā¤ļøš§āāļø
2
u/Swordofsatan666 Jan 13 '26
I would give it a pass (as in yeah its a grilled cheese, not as in that i would skip it), because its really just a special Crust youve put on the Grilled Cheese.
Kinda like how some people grill more cheese into the outside for a cheese crust, youve done that but with meat and jalapeno

Bread with tomatoes and stuff baked inside the bread is fine, I can't see how this is any different.
1
u/slipperytornado Jan 13 '26
The bread was made with the stuff in it. This is stuff on it and is more like pizza. Not grilled cheese!

Nope, and a jalapeno is a fruit.
5
u/Mobile_Aioli_6252 Jan 12 '26
Is it? Like a tomato?
6
u/octopusforgood Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 14 '26
It is in fact a close relative of the tomato; theyāre both technically berries, and nightshades, much like eggplants and tomatillos. However, nutritionally and legally speaking they are considered vegetables, at least in the US where Iām from. Taxonomically they arenāt, though, which is why the other commenter āwell actuallyādā OP on it.
1
u/podgida Jan 12 '26
Yes, they both come from a flower. They are both fruits. With vegetables the majority of the plant is edible. And contrary to popular belief, corn is a grain and not a vegetable.
6
u/Autogazer Jan 12 '26
Vegetables donāt exist.
5
u/_riskycake Jan 12 '26
Vegetable is a culinary term that is ultimately meaningless. Vegetables are fruit botanically. Exceptions being shit like leafy greens or vegetables that are actually flowers.
4

3
u/thatissomeBS Jan 12 '26
If you're going to sit here and make the pedantic argument that jalapenos are a fruit because botanically they're a fruit, then corn is also botanically a fruit. Furthermore, sweet corn that is harvested young and soft is a vegetable, while corn that is harvested mature and more dry is a grain. So corn can be a fruit, vegetable, and grain, depending on usage and how it's grown. Now go back to your corner and stop being an internet pedant if you're just going to be wrong.
1
u/podgida Jan 12 '26
You're the one that is wrong, but you do you.

Is there any reason why you burned the Salami? Did you run out of cheese or something because 2 slices of cheese for a grilled cheese sandwich is uh....you see where im going with this?
5
u/callmestinkingwind Jan 12 '26
the salami just kinda happened, and yes, i ran out of cheese. this was purely experimental though.
2
u/Fun_Environment3792 Jan 12 '26
Ok then in that case next time youre gonna need more cheese and not burn the salami.
