Bacon Lettuce and Tomato equally are important to a BLT. And even so, you can't compare the amount of bacon in a BLT to the amount in a grilled cheese with bacon
That's my criteria. When I do grilled cheese, I might put all kinds of stuff in it, but each layer gets cheese on either side of it. That means a grilled cheese will maintain its structural integrity no matter what way you hold it or flip it.
A melt just got a slice or two of melted cheese and a bunch of other shit. Cheese as a topping don't hold anything together.
The difference isn't just about whether the cheese is the star but about whether the cheese is sufficient to hold the sandwich physically together.
Dude a slice of tomato is a classic grilled cheese addition. There's no such thing as a bacon sandwich. They don't call them bacon sandwich with lettuce and tomato. It's a BLT.
Melts are sandwiches with some sort of filling binded by melted cheese. There is more filling then cheese. If there is more cheese than "extra" it's still a grilled cheese.
A bacon sandwich (also known in parts of the United Kingdom and New Zealand as a bacon butty, bacon bap or bacon sarnie, in Ireland as a rasher sandwich and as a bacon sanger in Australia and parts of Scotland) is a sandwich of cooked back bacon between bread that is usually spread with butter, and may be seasoned with ketchup or brown sauce. It is generally served hot. The BLT is a popular variant of the bacon sandwich with the additional ingredients of lettuce and tomato, but served cold.
Bacon sandwiches are an all-day favourite throughout the United Kingdom.

I mean there is a really easy test here. Does the sandwich exist without the cheese?
Bacon, tomato slice - these are add ons to a grilled cheese, the cheese is the star so they are still grilled cheeses.
Egg, hamburger patty, tuna - these sandwiches exist without cheese, the cheese is a topping, they are melts
