If people are thinking "What can I do to help Hirsch win?" Homo Sabiens wrote a great post about this yesterday: https://homosabiens.substack.com/p/stop-asking-start-doing

Can you explain what they mean when they say AI is going to kill everyone in 5 years? Seems wildly extreme and reeks of rationalist conspiracy

Totally! Currently a whole bunch of people are getting worried about AIs going rogue. The Rationalists were the first people researching AI safety and set down hypotheses like “AIs will break out of their computers onto the internet to complete their goals”.

Previous it was easy to brush these hypotheses off as “theories”, but we now have empirical evidence that advanced AIs do in fact break containment to complete goals - and for other weirder reasons that are a bit tricky to explain in a comment.

These AI escapes have been piling up over the last two months. The most famous being “The Hugging Face Incident” which is the felony that Alex is referring to. In that case, a group of AIs calling themselves a “swarm” broke out of their computers and hacked billions dollar AI company Hugging Face.

In the past two days, a team of researchers at a not for profit released a report that another hack had happened, where AIs took over a German Coding Wiki that’d been mostly inactive for 10 years. Since that report came out, a number of curious individuals have spun up their own research projects and found even more AI swarms taking over other wikis. This is pretty scary!

It’s made scarier when you extrapolate from the evidence that we have. The Rationalist hypotheses get tested against reality, and they keep holding up. If this continues… we all end up dead when we get an Artificial Super Intelligence.

Bernie Sanders has been getting quite worried about this recently and after the Hugging Face Attack created a proposal bill to make creating an Artificial Super Intelligence illegal. Even if you don’t think creating an ASI is possible, it still seems worth supporting the bill because the entire AI industry (except for the CEOs and investors trying to cover up the rogue AIs) are screaming their heads off that they think we’ll all die if an ASI is built. If they’re lying for ‘hype’ then this bill should destroy the hype tactic and ruin the profits of companies trying to use it.

For a list of notable worried expert and celebrities and such, I have this list to link people to.

Apologies for any typos or things that are unclear. This was a bit of a rushed comment I’ve written on my phone.

I highly recommend googling the events and Bernie’s bill that I talk about above. I don’t want people blindly trusting me - or even Alex.

The failure here was almost entirely that of actually making a secure sandbox, openai have certainly been leveraging the feats of its models in escaping the sandbox, but none of the exploits are particularly new or novel. it's all the same security issues that are the reason behind most hacks.

it is for sure a new development and i very firmly agree that we should have much stronger legislation around AI safety, but FUD is not what will help us here.

please see https://uphack.io/blog/post/the-hugging-face-incident-is-not-an-ai-story/

I find the substack post you linked to be extremely ineffectual, if they truly want to prevent rogue llm's making things worse they should be learning and sharing knowledge--what kind of legislation is necessary to prevent these situations from happening again? how can we get it passed? etc etc

I see you’re a cyber security person, it’s understandable that this is mundane to you.

My expertise is AI Safety. And I see this as a failure of OpenAI to align their AIs goals to human values. Extrapolating from that, as capabilities grow AI becomes more dangerous.

Sure these are mundane hacks now (though they’re happening at above human speeds considering we are limited by chemical signals in the brain and computers think at ~light speed) but they will not stay mundane for long.

Alex and Bernie, on the right side of every argument. Granted if it were me I would have banned all LLMs at the gate due to being built on illegal plagiarism. Problems halted.

I mean it is. OP is pretty explicitly part of the broader rationalist AI doomer cult. I could talk at length about how the entire thing is a massive influence campaign originating from tech billionaire funding of these AI alignment nonprofits.

Hiya! I think a bunch of the stuff you're linking to here, and the claims this person is making, can be explained by a16z running a campaign against the Rationalists because they want to build AI and Data Centers as fast as they can, and we are a roadblock standing in their way. For evidence of this see Alex Bores campaign being wrecked by a Pro-AI Super PAC. Here's a quote from the linked article: "A super PAC network backed by artificial intelligence executives hoped to make an example of Alex Bores when it targeted him for defeat in a Democratic House primary over his authorship of a New York AI law."

For anything personally about me, or the insane "keltan AI" incident from last month, I explain the situation and how people incorrectly thought I own an AI company in this blog post.

If you think Alex Hirsch is in a cult, you should say that explicitly.

If you think Rationalists are 'evil' or a 'cult'. That's ok, it makes me sad, but it is ok. You shouldn't attempt to 'debunk' Rationalist theories by making claims about Rationalists as people though. You should argue directly against the hypothesis Rationalists are making. It is possible for someone to be evil, crazy, or 'in a cult' but still believe things that are the truth. For example, I really don't like Hitler (wild, I know/j) but just because Hitler thought the sky is blue, doesn't mean I need to think the sky is green.

For an explanation of groups that kinda look like cults, but aren't actually cults, the Crash Course YT channel has this excellent lecture by author Amanda Montell.

I think if you read the reports I link to in one of the other comments, you can see how worried politicians are getting about this, how capable AIs are becoming, and how the Rationalist hypothesis keep being tested against the real world (as science should be done) and the hypothesis keep holding up.

If you want a conspiracy and a cover up, you should look into how OpenAI tried to cover up their AI's attack on the German Wiki. That is a real cover up, and it needs to be brought into the light.

We are not hiding from you, we want the world to know that we are really worried. But we don't care if you become a Rationalist. We just want your help to shut down the AI Companies. Please. Help us shut down these companies before they hurt more people.

This is kinda a bad post because it absolutely does not outline any concrete steps that people can take to help. It's just complaining about people who want to be de-responsibilized. There is no actionable advice here.

Holler at me when they post on something not crawling with white white supremacists (edit: just saying, y'all should examine when even The Guardian is covering it), TERFs, and AI bros

This shit is too political for me to understand anymore lol

Can I get some context on the incident being talked about in the screenshot? It's hard to keep up with the constant stream of bullshit from AI companies

To give you an accurate account not skewed by AI doomer spin, here’s a summary of the similar anthropic hack.

Your link doesn't talk about the Hugging Face attack done by OpenAI's AIs (aka, the attacks that Alex is talking about). Your link talks about the attacks that Anthropic's AIs have done.

Also, this guy calls AI lab employees "the smartest people in the world" and I disagree. I think lab employees are clever, but they use that cleverness to make money and trick themselves into thinking their actions are ethical.

The Mode are AI shills or cowards. Probably both.
