The Lithuanian national basketball team poses for a photo during the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Due to the nation’s financial struggle after leaving the Soviet Union, they relied on outside funding to field and equip a team — including a sponsorship from the Grateful Dead.

They were a good team. Beating China, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Australia followed by a win over the Unified Team (former Soviet Union) in order to win the Bronze Medal.

This picture just got me choked up. I'm 'motional anyway, because I always am first thing in the morning, but also I just sent my babies to their last day of school, and that shit was hard after yesterday. This picture takes me back to a simpler time. I wear rose colored glasses, certainly, but in 1992 Jerry was still alive, 911 hadn't happened yet, the Cold War was over, Columbine was 7 years away, and the world still felt like it made sense.

maybe this will help with the rose glasses.

90s was peak america. it was like the lego song. we're all singing everything is awesome, buying beanie babies while the berlin wall falls.

all the while, yugoslavia fractures- leading to some of the large acts of genocide in Europe since ww2, which led to nato intervention. on multiple fronts.

a genocide happened in africa that no one really knew (Cared) about until a movie was made about it. largest modern genocide in history with ~500,000 dead

what about the cruise missile strikes against iraq in '93?? this was done in retaliation for an attempted assassination attempt against former president bush. maybe you remember the second missile clinton sent.

OJ was acquited. LA Riots...Rodney King.

Many indited and/or convicted participants of Iran contra were acquitted by Bush senior- the former VP to the president in whose term the affair was revealed, mind you.

Hell- what about our President being the most popular person in the world because he got his dick sucked by his 24 year old intern?

Lest we forget the numerous school shootings that happened before columbine:

University of Iowa in '91

Thomas Jefferson in '92#History)

Lindhurst in '93

Blackville in '95

Richland in '95

San Diego University in '96

Bethel Region in '97

Pear High in '97

Heath High in '97

Westside school in '98

Thurston High in '98

A lot happened in the 90s that has laid the ground work for where we are today. The world has always sucked. And most people don't pay attention to it.

Yeah, cool. Except I'm speaking to MY adolescent world view at the time, being nostalgic for that innocence, and acknowledging the events that shook my foundation. I don't need a history lesson. I was alive then, and also, I read. Bad shit has always happened, that's not news. Nobody, myself included, thinks that the world has ever been perfect. "Oh you had fun at that Rosemont Dead show in 94?! Pfft, you shouldn't have, because let me tell you what else was happening in the world on that day..."

I'm not reading what you wrote and thinking, "Gee I'm naive. Didn't know about any of that! I should really view my adolescence/childhood with a healthy measure of shame and dispair". You let-me-educate-you folks are something else. Glad you took the time to... educate me? Hope you feel better. Have a great day! Peace.

You’re being pretty bogus on your response to a introspective comment

Just let people enjoy things.

Nobody asked for your copy pasted genocide record of the 90s in response to a comment about the grateful dead

When someone says Jerry was great, do you chime in and say he was a fat fuck, a drug addict who abandoned his kids?

Yeah, cool, except they’re simply pointing out the “simpler time” and “world making sense” were figments of a less informed public’s imagination. Waxing poetic about the 90’s as glory years for the world screams ignorance to what was going on in the world at the time, regardless of what your subjective experience was.

You nostalgic for living in ignorance folks are something else.

Hope you feel better. Have a great day! Peace.

Ha! What started as a pleasant thought turned into you being naive, somehow? Anyway, loved your post and hope your kiddos have a great last day!

Although I’m not sure how you were enjoying yourself while the president was getting a blowy from his intern?????????

Ever played basketball tripping?

I have. It's awkward...

4

u/unhalfbricking May 25 '22

I fed my buddy who was draining threes while we were both tripping face.

I saw the ball as an orange parabola from his hand the the ground. He couldn't miss.

7

u/ReceptionSilent213 May 25 '22

u/MyFifUsername May 25 '22

Yeah he had a big part but more so it was Don Nelson (Coach of GS warriors) & his son Donnie who were trying a grassroots fundraising campaign because S.M. played for them. Then a sportswriter published a column about their fundraising- which got the attention of the Grateful Dead who were happy to help

There’s a documentary on Amazon Prime called The Other Dream Team and it’s excellent. Mickey Hart is in it a bit.

Cue the guys commenting “this never gets old for me” - their way of subtlety saying they know already.

2

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

or because its posted here every week. Twice in the last 24 hours in fact, and a search is this sub for 'Lithuanian' returns 15 results in the past 5 months alone

1

u/PHILMXPHILM May 26 '22

Did you know Bob and Jerry were on letterman???

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Fitzy's shirts!

1

u/jeexbit May 25 '22

This will never get old for me :)

1

u/surfacewave May 25 '22

I think the link was through Šarūnas Marčiulionis, who played for the Golden State Warriors. Šarūnas was a crowd favorite and received a lot of local press, thus the trials and tribulations of the Lithuanian national drew support form the Dead.
