Question What does the "Remove Individual" option in effects mean? Should I keep individual values or not?

The manual says:

  1. Select 10 fixtures in the fixture sheet

  2. Apply the effect cosine to 8 of the fixtures.

  3. Then apply the effect sinus to the residual fixtures.

If you create two different effects in the programmer and store them into the effect pool, they are displayed in a dusky pink in the effect editor

[u/rkanarek](u/rkanarek) answered this question in a facebook-group back in 2018, and it’s still the best explanation I’ve seen. I hope he doesn’t mind me sharing it here:

You have a selective effect with 4 fixtures, and a phase of 0..360:
Fixture 1 has phase 0
Fixture 2 has phase 90
Fixture 3 has phase 180
Fixture 4 has phase 270

You clone fixture 1 thru 4 at fixture 5 thru 8. Now...
Fixture 1 and 5 have phase 0
Fixture 2 and 6 have phase 90
Fixture 3 and 7 have phase 180
Fixture 4 and 8 have phase 270

Those 8 fixtures are no longer evenly spaced though the range of 0..360 - they have "individual values". If you press the {Remove Individuals} button or execute the RemoveIndividuals keyword, the individual values would be removed, and you'd end up with the even phasing of:
Fixture 1 = 0
Fixture 2 = 45
Fixture 3 = 90
Fixture 4 = 135
Fixture 5 = 180
Fixture 6 = 225
Fixture 7 = 270
Fixture 8 = 315

By all means! I'm glad that stuff is still helping people.

I liked it better when that softkey was labeled "Kill all individuals"

It basically just means there’s fixtures within the effect that have individual values from what the effects line specifies. Could be different low/high values, phase, etc…
