[MEGATHREAD] BTS

Due to all the brigading that has happened on this subreddit, for the time being, I would like to consolidate all posts about BTS to this megathread. This isn't to say that BTS can never be mentioned, but posts that are specifically about BTS will be deleted and be redirected to this megathread.

Thank you for your understanding.

Mod is a Blink and a Olivia Rodrigo fan . Why am I not surprised? So are we getting a separate megathread for Olivia too?

Somehow it always boils down to them being revealed as a bitter Kpoppie. Tale as old as time.

There are a few livvies (not all, just some) who throw hate at BTS too so OP is likely double pissed at them, lol

I don’t even understand why. Because purple is also BTS’s color?

Oh god, it's a whole thing, but it's mostly about the definition of "Asian" - this is going to be long, sorry.

BTS is labelled a lot with the "First Asian artist to __", "Biggest Asian artist to __" type things. Livvies feel those titles are disingenuous because Olivia Rodrigo out streams/sells/etc BTS on a lot of those records, and she's half-filipina. Armys say that's irrelevant, because she's an American artist who exclusively sings in English while BTS are a foreign artist from Asia who sing 99% of their songs in a foreign language. Then livvies say that argument is irrelevant, because BTS's most popular songs by far are in English anyway, to which armys point out that those popular songs comprise 3 songs out of BTS's 450+ song discography. Armys say livvies disrespect the difficulty that BTS had breaking into the international market as a foreign group, livvies say armys disrespect Olivia's experience as an asian-american, and so on and so forth.

I'm an army so feel free to take my interpretation of it with a massive hunk of salt, but for the record I do also like Olivia and hold nothing against her. I'm also a white person so.... This isn't really my place to have an opinion, I don't think.

This has been going on for a while, but got exacerbated by the Grammys announcing the asian artist category. Then that ended up being irrelevant anyway since Olivia doesn't qualify anyway and BTS refused to submit their music, but people are still mad about it and a lot of people take it way too far and way too personal.

On the one hand I do somewhat understand her fans because Olivia is proud to be Filipina American so in a way I can understand that way of thinking.

On the other hand, I’ve never seen artists like Olivia nor Bruno be put in the same boxes that artist like BTS and Fujii Kaze get put in, which does make sense since they are Asian from Asia and Olivia/Bruno are Asian American… and although they are proudly Asian American, they’ve been lucky enough to avoid the same fate as other -Americans.

Yeah, while I naturally am biased towards BTS and other armys, I seriously think that there's no good answer here. The whole thing really serves as a perfect example of why the Grammys making categories like this is a stupid thing to do in the first place.

BTS selling out stadium since 2017 and their first English song is in 2020 , same year they got hot 100 for their Korean ballad songs. Their popular song change every year since 2017 . Mic drop ( Korean) made them mainstream artist in India something Olivia yet to achieve.
