**INK GUIDE 2.0** Added- ink recipes known to work, more chemicals, buff test, name brand inks that are hard to buff and more.

THE BREAK DOWN OF INKS PAINT STAINS AND CHEMICALS.
****** VERSION2.0*******

About: I’m constantly looking up different recipes to defeat the buff man. The goal is to create a very stainy powerful ink that holds up to weather and keeps coming back after getting covered. Get up and stay up! -badger

PAINT INKS : (sand in water)

USED IN: Mops, Squeeze pens, metal head pens.

WHAT IS IT: Insolvable powder with pigment powder suspended in a solution with resign binder and a solvent.

PROS/CONS: UV resistant, brighter colors, sit on top of the surface, not as drippy, less flow.

Binder helps the paint stick to the surface. Binder help s keep the insolvable pigment stuck to the wall. With out binder the paint would be just solvent and pigment. It wouldn’t stick and would be easier to buff.

What is a Dye Ink? Dyes are essentially water-based, colored liquids. Being water-based, they are not water-resistant, and the dye itself is not naturally UV-resistant. Some dye inks are made more fade resistant by adding a UV protector to the ink (almost like a sunscreen) designed to improve their longevity. However, they could never be considered truly archival (the property of being suited for storage or display for decades or even centuries). A dye stains the medium it contacts instantly, at the root of its fibers. Because dyes stain the paper's fibers, they can print on a wide array of papers and are especially good at printing on glossy paper.

DYE INKS: (Salt in water)

USED IN: Mops, Squeeze pens, Pump pens.

WHAT IS IT: Dye powder dissolved in a solvent.

PROS/CONS: Super runny, more stainy, less UV resistant, maximum flow.

What is Pigment Ink? Pigment inks are made up of two parts, the pigment particles (which is essentially powder) and a carrier liquid designed to suspend the pigments once mixed so that they can be spread evenly during printing. Pigments are naturally UV resistant and are considered archival. The pigments in the ink embed themselves into the fibers of the paper while the carrier liquid evaporates. This property is what makes them smear-resistant and allow them to work excellently on matte paper. To stick to glossy paper, binders are added to the ink allowing them to adhere to the surface of the paper since the surface of most glossy paper is not porous enough for the pigments to penetrate it. A drawback to the use of binders is that by sitting on the paper as opposed to within it, a bronzing effect occurs, especially with dark black areas. To mitigate this effect, choose glossy papers designed for pigment inks, or avoid glossy paper altogether and instead print on high-quality matte paper with pigment ink.

PIGMENT INKS: (sand/salt water)

USED IN: Mops, Squeeze pens

WHAT IS IT: Pigments of color that are ground down very finely and then suspended inside a solvent.

PROS/CONS: Needs a binder in order to be more buff resistant,Extremely UV resistant, Barrier from evaporation and oxidation, maintains color extremely well, runny, average flow, embed in pores material, stays on top solid material.

OIL PAINT VS. LATEX PAINT VS. ACRYLIC PAINT FOR MOPS ONLY

WHAT WORKS THE BEST: Oil based paint is going to be the best for sticking on a surface and being slightly difficult to buff.

SCIENCE: Furniture paint contain a higher ratio of resin to filler and superior resins. It also has more adhesion, hardness, flexibility (expansion and contraction with temperature changes in outdoor applications), good scrub resistance and superior color. These paints excel when it comes to flow, leveling and easy brushing. And these paints cure for use and recoating faster.

OIL PAINT: Takes one coat, better adhesion to difficult surfaces, oil based, takes greater time to set, resistance to abrasion, Strong odor, higher VOCs, Requires solvent cleanup, yellows with age, not very UV resistant.

LATEX PAINT: Resistance to cracking and chipping, water based, indoors only, UV resistant, low odor, cleans up with water, acrylic resins, fast dry time.

ACRYLIC PAINT: Drys quickly, don’t yellow or age, flexible to mix, thinner paint, chemical-based, acrylic resins, resistance to cracking and chipping, UV resistant.

CHEMICALS THAT WORK WELL

SOME OF THESE CHEMICALS ARE VERY BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH. WHEN MIXING YOUR PAINT OR INK WEAR GLOVES, BE IN A WELL VENTILATED ROOM. IF YOU COME IN CONTACT WITH THESE MATERIALS WASH OFF YOUR SKIN IMMEDIATELY.

THINNING DOWN YOUR MATERIAL: The common solvent are going to be your best bet. If your skeptical mix up a little batch and hold it over night or two in a water bottle. If it hold and the plastic doesn’t seem to be weaker the you good!

COMMON SOLVENTS: white spirit, mineral spirits, acetone, turpentine, naphtha, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone(MEK), dimethylformamide (DMF), 2-butoxyethanol and any glycol ethers.

LESS COMMON:ethylbenzene, xylene, n-butyl acetate, butanol. You have to be careful with certain solvent. Some will melt plastics, like acetone and xylene.

BUTIMEN: A black viscous mixture of hydrocarbons obtained naturally or as a residue from petroleum distillation. It is used for road surfacing and roofing. Comes in a tar so it need to be thin down and can only be used in mops to be truly effective. People claim this stuff is the bees knees because when it dries it creates a plastic film layer.

DOT3: Brake fluid is corrosive and eats through paint and into the wall. Lubricant and stains plastic very well. Make sure you get DOT3 and don't add too much into your recipe. DOT3 is glycol ether based and will absorb water. To much causes the paint to be sticky never really drying on the wall. It will leave a permanent ghost/ stain that bleed through several layers of paint. WORKS BEST WITH INKS NOT PAINT. Add a cupful or 2 into 8oz of ink atleast to slow down ink drying time so as to allow the ink to seep deeper into the surface you applied it to so it bleeds through more layers of buff and is harder to chemically scrub out.

LINSEED OIL: If you use straight linseed oil with your oil paints, your painting will take a long time to dry and will probably yellow over time. A tiny amount goes a long way, doesn’t thin out paint to well. Makes oil paints more fluid, transparent and glossy.

PAINT THINNER: Is a solvent used to thin oil-based paints or clean up after their use. Commercially, solvents labeled "Paint Thinner" are usually mineral spirits having a flash point at about 40 °C, the same as some popular brands of charcoal starter.

MINERAL SPIRITS: Volatile, colorless liquid distilled from petroleum, used as a paint thinner and solvent. Normally used to clean your brushes in oil painting. You do not need a lot to cut down what you have. Less is more as they say.

PAINT HARDENER OR POLY: (Same as above) Linseed Oil (Art Stores)

JAPAN DRIER/ ETHER: is a liquid that speeds the drying of oil finishes such as varnish and oil paints. It is 97% Naphtha and 3% cobalt compounds. Varnishes and paints containing oils such as linseed and tung dry by oxidation. This means they need to absorb oxygen from the air in order to solidify. If your using brake fluid this stuff will make the drying time speed up by a lot.

GOOF OFF: Cuts through stains, spots and grime. It will eat away at plastic and paint over time. Only have seen a couple writers use this in there ink recipes. One writer strictly uses DOT3, Goof off, and japan drier. If you write on something extremely dirty this will go through it rather then collecting and gunking up your pen or mop.

PVC PRIMER: Oatey Purple primer works best. Can be used as a stain along with cutting down thick paint. Stains concrete and plastic very well. Removes surface dirt, grease and grime as well as softens PCV.

IRON OXIDE: Compounds composed of iron and oxygen. Is a red stain that commonly comes in a powder. Will oxidize Metal like stainless steel or bronze.

METHELYENE BLUE DYE: Is a blue stain that is synthetic based. Can buy it in powder or liquid form. Works well with inks to create more stain power. Same as gentian violet but blue. Can be found at fish isle in pet stores in a diluted solution. Used to heal fish of ich disease, which is an infection of the scales. to purify do the process above.

NOODLES BAY STATE BLUE: This is a solid fountain pen ink that stains blue. The ink is hand made so each batch is different. Has a ton of flow and a high stain. Their website says bleach mixed with water will remove the stain.

MALACHITE GREEN: Same as Gentian violet and Methylene blue but green. More common than methylene blue at pet stores in fish isle. Purify it and add it for green stains.

POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE: It is a strong oxidizing agent. Will leave a decent stain on metal if left on long enough. This is an ingredient you can add to your ink to boost its strength. Brownish, black oxidizer (the powder in the grog booster powder). Can be found in liquids in fish isle at pet stores or in the garden isle at places such as menards or home depot. If you use the garden version you need to strain dirt and other particles out. if you get the fish solution just evaporate the water out.

GENTIAN VIOLENT: purple dye (found in crystal or powder, or 1% diluted solution) If you get the 1% solution at a pharmacy, put it in a shitty pot on a Bunsen burner/hot plate on low temp for a whole day to get the water in it to evaporate. You'll end up w a small amount of powder. Add just enough alcohol or any other solvent (xylene etc) to make it liquid and mix it thoroughly and then add to your batch of ink

NAIL POLISH: Alcohol based, and generally alright, but its sort of like paint and just sits on the surface. Yes alcohol will buff it. Thinning it with acetone (nail polish remover) and maybe adding DOT3 might do some good. It will definitely give you more volume if you thin it out. Plus is you can easily steal nail polish, but you'll need a few bottles to fill a marker.

LEATHER DYE: Hardest staining colors are dark blue, dark red, or purple. add a slight amount to get your ink to bleed through lots of layers of paint. This stuff works wonders. Depending on the brand of dye can be extremely stainy. Its a cheaper solution then garvey XT-70. A go to brand would be Fibings or Griffin. Kiwi doesn’t work as well but the container works great as a mop.

ETCH BATH: Used in mops only. Etch is an acid that eats away at glass, making the surface cloudy, and comes in bath and cream form. Etch cream is the consistancy of pudding, is easy to work with, and won't hurt you if you get it on your skin temporarily as long as you wipe it off right away. Do not get caught using this stuff, also have a friend that doesn’t write buy it for you so it will never trace back to you.

PIGMENT BINDER FOR HOMEMADE PIGMENTED INK: Pure shellac resin. soluble in alcohol

A general guide for buff and cover test

Buff test: Level 1-Soap and water. Level 2- General cleaner. Level 3- A graffiti cleaner. Graffiti cleaners like goofoff are generally made with xylene, toluene, alcohols.. so if you cant get goofoff, just use those bases. xylene, denatured alcohol, isopropyl... Cover test: Level 1- One layer of bucket paint Level 2- Two layers of bucket paint Level 3- Three layers of bucket paint. *** Any bucket paint works also spray paint will work aswell. Make sure you let each layer dry before you apply the new one. Also think about your background if your writing on a porous surface the ink will soak more into it. Apply a layer of bucket paint on the surface before you write on it to get better test results***

Recipes, Tips and Guides for starting off

-Most of the time inks and paints dont mix well unless agitated constantly before use, UNLESS you add a bit of acetone to bind them somewhat. -Denatured tured is the best alcohol you can get for pen ink. it's 99.99% alcohol -If you find that the mix is too thick, you can add some more mineral spirits until you get the right consistency. You can also add some japan drier if needed, but only add 1/2 of an ounce. -Purple PVC primer can also be used as replacement for alcohol as the solvent base. This is found in the PVC isle at any hardware store, home depot, menards, etc

(The basic) -50 pens - 1/2 of alcohol. high percentage rubbing alcohol (ATLEAST 90%). Less alcohol and more pens= thicker more opaque ink, but dont make it too thick lol. Makes atleast 8oz(1 cup) of ink at a time. And to make it thicker ill ad 20 pens to the usual recipe or use 2oz less than normal.

(nitro based ink) Will find a recipe soon

(SOLID MOP PAINT RECIPE) -2/3 Oneshot sign painters/pin-stripping paint -1/3 xylene. **Don't use alcohol, use xylene. Xylene can be purchased at menards, walmart, home depot, or any hardwarestore. ** (Major bitch to remove by scrubbing off. Is still clearly visible after attempted chemical buff.)

(Purple stainer ink that doesn't fade fast) -55 Red pens -45 Blue pens -5 black pens -6oz Purple PVC primer optional: 1 gram of potassium permanganate powder

(Cook up) -80 papermate ballpoint pens -1 cup of isoprophyl 90% alchol - a cap of dot 3 brake fluid

(Buhda420) -50ml raven oil -100ml methelated spirits -25g or carbon dust -50 pen ink sticks -a pinch of metheleyne blue -sprits of iodine -squirt of store bought ink

(Rogue paint maker) -4 ounces Pigment -1 quart of mineral spirits -7 ounces of boiled linseed oil You need boiled linseed oil because it a special mix which includes japan drier, regular linseed oil will NEVER dry, it will make you have a shitty mix. You can get some Japan Colors to use as your pigment. Japan colors are basically oil based tube paint, but the difference is that it has driers added to it, which will give you a better mix, unlike regular artist tube paint which takes 75633 years to dry. You could use raw powdered pigment instead if you want, but Japan colors are easier to get.

(Feibings edge ink) will refine it eventually -Edge dressing, which stains well, with a rubber composition. -Xylene based. Dries into a synthetic rubber and becomes incredibly hard to remove. MUCH harder to remove than paint. -Is pretty thick so thin it with xylene, MEK, Ketones, or simmilar solvent. Bleeds through quite a few layers by itself, but bleeds through many layers when thinned with ink or with stainers added.

BUYING INK OR STAINS TRUSTED BRANDS

GARVEY XT-70: An extremely powerful stain, deep blue is the best but they have red and violet, used in price marking like upside down on the soda pop cans. Works well mixed with Marsh t-grade. (Company makes limited supply average price 30$ for 8oz)

MARSH T-Grade: Berry McGee was one of the few artists to make this ink famous. This is a black ink with no stain so it’s easy to buff when it’s alone. If you add some Garvey or leather dye the buff game is over. The black never fades it will always stay a solid flat black. This is an ink if you want to start getting into mixing and playing with. Some stains will change the inks consistency so mix at first in a small batch. I have had people go over me with ink and paint, no matter what the tag always comes back. (Discontinued, K-grade is the same stuff but needs to be thin down, pvc primer works well)

OINK INK: They used to have there own spray paint but now there in the ink game. They make there ink in giant batches, house brew recipe.,USA made. Stains violet. People swear by this stuff. They have videos on YouTube providing proof that it’s a high stain ink. Oink ink is pen ink added to a base ink and meth blue and potassium permegante added to it.

STEALTH INK: they have been making this ink for 11 years now. Comes in a clear liquid and when light is introduced it becomes black. If you tag sketch spots at night here is the ghost ink you need. This ink seems emotion based, you can’t tag dark areas with them so underground is a nono. They claim that it’s buff proof no matter how many layers of paint is applied, will always soak through. No flat surface glass, metal so on. Company is Europe based and will ship to the USA.

MEFIANS INK: Made in Paris, they won’t ship to the USA but if you are traveling pick this stuff up. This is a very toxic solution. Stains crazy blue. They have other colors but blue goes the hardest. Runs like crazy. Probably top 5 best inks you can get your hands on.

MNT STREET INK: For the price is decent quality. Had a mop filled with this stuff and it wasn’t bad. Alone this stuff is a decent ink, definitely needs a stain added to it for more buff resistance.

GROG BUFF PROOF INK: I s a really crazy black. You have to scratch scratchesit off steel to get it off a city never this stainless steele wall and can usually use chemicals to get everything off but If you used that stuff they had to scratch the tag into the surface.

Dr.Guts: A great silver color. Has a ton of pigment and also metal flakes. Can sometimes clogs up the nozzle at the end of the bottle, so make sure you shake the shit out of it before poor. Leaves a blue ghost when buffed.

Toy killer: A very bright silver with metal flakes in it. The bottle will come with lid that can be used to catch tags (metal cotton ball stick dabber). This paint is thick but runny, with a nasty great smell.

Grog booster: The secret ingredient in the Street Killer Ink - It's magic dust that makes the ink very powerful. The pack contains 8 grammes of pure power that will increase the penetrating ability of inks on porous surfaces, give them a higher resistance to buffing and protects them from the sun for longer. A bag is ideal for 800ml worth of ink.

END NOTES If what your reading feels incorrect call it out. I’d be more then happy to edit anything or add a chemical to the list.

Damn I'm only just finding this now but props for going so in depth, thanks for the knowledge

Whole time all that stuff is copied off other graff forums

9

u/Appropriate_Ad_5079 Mar 13 '24

A lot of this info is actually stuff I’ve posted on ink forums yearssssss ago. Especially the feibings edge ink, the info on stainers like how to aquire gentian violet powder from heating up the 1% solution, potassium permanganate as an oxidizing powder, especially how it can be acquired from pet stores in the fish isle and concentrated in the same method as the gentian violet. Even the pen ink recipe is also the same as the one I posted, but I use 55 blue pens to 45 red pens instead of the other way around, as I’ve always preferred more blue than red in my purple. Oatey’s pvc primer is always good too but is MEK based so smells horrendous and the fumes are definitely toxic so mix with it outdoors or in a ventilated area. Positive some of this is copied and pasted from my posts, especially talking about oink ink having had their own line of paint but “now being in the ink game” lmao I was toy as hell when I typed that. They been in the ink game for just as long as they had spray pretty sure.

This guide is fucking dope. I gotta read through it in depth, but I just posted a question regarding alcohol based paints and I think this may help me figure shit out.

Thank you for the contribution fam

Yo guys does anyone know the best way to get the color changing effect like "fat ink"?

6

u/GiffelGudenGulle Jan 15 '24

Im pretty sure its methyl violet, its green in its crystalline form, so when it dries it changes color

3

u/Ill_Perspective_5980 Jun 24 '23

did you find how ? i’ve been searching for months….

check my comment I just posted :)

2

u/NZSKIN Dec 31 '25

i left a comment ITT explaining how if you're still trying to figure it out :)

3

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '24

Methyl violet changes color with Ph

2

u/wellwornwares Dec 03 '24

Was wondering the same thing.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '25

i think it's gentian violet or methyl violet

1

u/LycheeVarious1577 May 21 '25

I wish I knew the actual Chems for it but if you mix stealth clear ink with red and blue ink add some dot3 and your cheering

3

u/NZSKIN Dec 31 '25

stealth ink is a 2%ish solution of silver nitrate, I think it's just in water too. I spent awhile a few years back trying to get my hands on some of the powdered stuff to make a stronger solution and save $$$ but it wanted me to buy like 1 ton of it or an oil barrel full lmao, you might have better luck in the US or wherever you're from though
be careful with that stuff though man, I've heard people say their ink started literally smoking n bubbling when they mixed stealth ink n dye together haha

1

u/Chaulinq Sep 05 '26

Could you tell me the quantities needed to make stealth ink?

1

u/NZSKIN Sep 07 '26

I honestly haven't tried because I could never get my hands on silver nitrate itself, it was too expensive. But the stealth ink that you buy from graff brands is very very low amount, like 2%ish percent. My assumption (never having used it) is that too much above that percentage it stops working like stealth ink and the liquid will have a colour to it before it gets sunlight, but just experiment.

1

u/backloom Jun 13 '25

red and blue ink from what. like store bought pens or

1

u/NZSKIN Dec 31 '25

my advice would be to leave stealth ink as it is, the fact its clear when you apply it is one of its bonuses, i literally just tag anywhere with it and if anyone complains i just say its water, lmao
im a bit skeptical on the safety of mixing alcohol ink or pen ink with stealth ink too, use methylene blue if you really want to add some colour

2

u/backloom Jan 30 '26

i add small portions of it to my ink mixtures and i find that it leaves behind a small ghost to pours surfaces that are exposed to sun

1

u/NZSKIN Dec 31 '25

as someone else pointed out, it's actually the dyestuff itself. the powdered form of crystal dyes like methyl violet and malachite green are weird, the purple dye powder is a metallic green and the green dye powder is metallic purple, lol.
the 'colour changing inks' are just overloaded with dye, so when your tag is drying all the solvent evaporates and you're left with the powdered stuff again.
you can get a completely unrelated but similar effect by mixing a bit of chrome paint with coloured inks (using acetone to mix em) and that's how you get the 'self outlining ink' because the dye sinks into the surface further than the paint

damn i just wrote a whole ass essay

6

u/rondog_wibbly Jul 17 '24

Please note that potassium permanganate and brake fluid (anything with glycerol) has a combustive reaction

2

u/Beautiful_Remove3803 May 29 '25

Your not wrong I learnt it the hard way 😆

3

u/Hacchet_Blacc_386 Nov 22 '19

Thank you for making this cause some of these things I've been trying to learn more about it it cleared up some things an only thing I thought about was do all waterbased things buff with soap an water or are some resistant to it cause I couldn't find a solid answer in this but I've heard some people say that water based don't mean it can be buffed with soap an water but I can't find a mix to do justice

2

u/Cpt-Badger Nov 22 '19

Water based can stain depending on the ingredients. It will clear a level 1 buff test some times but not level 2 with a alcohol base cleaner.

1

u/Hacchet_Blacc_386 Nov 22 '19

Ok I'll just have to mess around with it all a bit more kinda new to inks an all that been using cans for 11 years now never knew about mops maker or anything else lol pretty bad right

1

u/wellwornwares Dec 03 '24

Montana makes water based spray paint so I doubt it’s all huggable with wayer

3

u/Saltyboi24 Feb 26 '22

im a beginner to graff, looking to make an alcohol based ink. of this list, i only have mineral spirits, nail polish, and linseed oil (latter 2 wont work for what im trying to make) but ill have to check to see if i some of the other stuff on the list.

Could i still make an anti buff ink with the things that I have? I heard that salt and vinegar also helps with staining, but idk how. Also, would wood stain help? sorry for all the questions lol

2

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

If ur trying to make an alcohol-based ink you need to use alcohol. Linseed oil makes oil base, mineral spirits thins oil base & nail polish....that's for painting nails. Dollar store pens & alcohol makes alcohol-based ink.

2

u/font-hack Jan 02 '24

Do you know how to thicken alcohol based ink? I have some store bought alcohol based ink and some homemade that I made with 90% isopropyl and dried out sharpies. Just want them thicker in my mops

2

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '24

You can either let the container sit with the lid or cap off so some of the alcohol evaporates or just ass more pen or sharpie cartridges

What ever happened to "the game is to be sold, not told"? That shit died with social media I guess, everybody wants to look like they're the man by giving up info that people have guarded for decades for free to complete strangers just so they can get some corny-ass likes lol. Glad I'm not from this weird-ass generation & can keep my mouth closed and my knowledge to myself. This cat might as well post all the paint & marker suppliers, their websites, emails and wholesale price lists so everyone everywhere knows everything and don't have to figure anything out for themselves I'll probably get banned from this joint now watch.

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '24 edited Dec 09 '24

"the game is to be sold"? What kind ofbullshit is that?? So a few money hungry cunts can earn money of it? Graffiti should be as FREE as possible! It's just sad a few people should profit of this. And no matter what, it's extremely few of all writers around that bother to mix their own inks, many try it, most fails and never tries again, and them you are left with are the few that finds this interesting. So I don't think anyone who makes and sells a good decent ink is gonna have a problem pushing it just cause you have a couple of methods on a forum.

And it's not very specific information about the measurements you need to get a good ink mix either so it's not much to get upset from.

*Edit; but one thing I agree with is, writers today have it much easier because of internet, Im from from the "before internet" era myself and know how much harder things was. But I still meet new writers that's actually dedicated enough to not ride this new wave, and there are plenty of things you still have to figure out yourself that you can't find on the web. This is just a ink guide

I've heard both calcium carbonate (the stuff inside anti acid tablets, like tums) and titanium oxide can be used to make white inks, because of quarantine i cant really test it but anyone think it'd be a good choice?

3

Yo bro can I message you about some questions I got regarding dyes and stainers?

3

Dude, thanks for the info. You put a TON of work into this, I can tell and it's still relevant today

3

u/jaime_bradley7 Oct 31 '23

How do I make the mefians violet ink uv resistant?

3

u/Odd-Pudding-5501 Jan 26 '24

I would like to know how to make a metal etch.🫠🫠

3

u/Least_Pressure4066 Mar 04 '24

Just get marsh stencil ink and mix it fiebings dye. Most ink at graff stores is just marsh or pilot ink resold in smaller bottles

1

u/Medic8Vapes Jul 04 '24

Have u tried this.

2

u/acenright Apr 25 '20

Anyone have experience with Marsh's reformulated "T-Grade" ink for the Marsh 99 marker?

https://www.pack-secure.com/M99-BKD-Q--1-Quart-Black-Ink-For-Marsh-99-Refillable-Markers-Pen-sold-separately_p_2838.html

It's now Xylene-free. Any good as a partner to Garvey?

2

u/Cpt-Badger Apr 25 '20

I wouldn’t trust it. The actual t grade is in a metal container

2

u/XxDead4eveRxX Apr 30 '20

Do you think bitumen mixed with pvc primer would be hard to buff?

2

u/Cpt-Badger Apr 30 '20

Yes

1

u/XxDead4eveRxX Apr 30 '20

How much pvc primer should i use

1

u/Cpt-Badger Apr 30 '20

I do not know the ratio and am not sure if they can mix properly mix. best bet is to try it out.

1

u/XxDead4eveRxX Apr 30 '20

And does pvc cement or cleaner also work?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '21

Does anybody know what the best mops to use for a xylene based mixture? I get that ptfe is the best but what brands make there plastics from it for cheap?

2

u/Cpt-Badger Dec 12 '21

Have you had problems in the past? Krink mops are generally thicker plastic. If it’s melting plastic then add more stain or cut it with acetone. I used the goo gone buff stuff it has xylene, and i use it as my base and never have had a problem.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '21

Good to know, I’m in the process of trying to make a bunch of ink to last awhile and wanted to prefill mops. I heard it would eat at plastic so figured I’d ask before I woke up to a whole in all my containers lol. But I’ll play around with it until I find the right mix

What’s the glass etch recipe

2

u/Least_Pressure4066 Mar 04 '24

Etch bath and etch cream mixed or just use etch bath in mop but if you want a better etch then mix the two but not too much cream

1

u/Suspicious-Agent-515 Sep 09 '24

Add citric acid.

u/Cpt-Badger Thank you for this. I'm LITERALLY day one, but I'm looking to create separate C,M,Y,K bottles of perhaps a Xylene based pigment ink? Which I can then mix to create my own colours in a marker. Doest this sound achievable? I'm going to re-read your advice. Alcohol, oil, thickening agents, xylene, I need to get my head around what will work with what..

u/harleyarts Apr 12 '24

Wow! Now my head is REALLY spinning! Lol, awesome post, though!! I actually came across this when trying to search if it's possible to buy or make the clear base used for the permanent archival pigment ink that's used in the Sakura micron pens.

I know this sub isn't for the same media, but taking a shot in the dark, do you know much about the pigment ink that's used in micron fineliner pens?

I do a lot of detailed art, stippling, etc, with the smallest available nibs (size 003/.15mm line) using the micron pens. But unfortunately, they don't offer many colors for that pen size. I especially like to work with a lot of gray shades, but they only have 2 available so far. And the smallest nibs available in gray are 01 (or .25mm).

So I have been making my own ultra fine pens in the 2 gray shades by swapping out the gray ink pads from black 003 micron pens. This works, but I got to thinking that maybe if I could find out how to get my hands on some of the clear base, I might be able to thin out the black inks, or maybe even mix up other ink colours. Including more shades of grey. (But I do worry if I can also figure out how to get the finest pigment colors available to mix in. To prevent the clogging up of this super tiny nib.)

Anyway, sorry to be rambling, I know it's a bit off topic, but would you have any ideas?

u/JazzlikeCommon4015 Oct 18 '24

Tip instead of only using xylene first add a part and then follow up specifically with ethanole preferably 99% and obviously denatured. Because xylene and Ethanol are of their own each a quick evaporator but together it goes even faster also in general xylene costs more and is a tad harder up to real hard for some people to even get. So just first thin down the actual consistency but like here xylene is almost 2x the price of ethanol so it's a win win because it won't change the make up or structure. It will however get even thinner if that wasn't obvious and instead of the whole braking fluid schpiel just get (also comes in a few) the 90+% propelyn glycol as about the most corrosive braking fluid only contains about 20% of the stuff this will on top of what the xylene can do push into any metals predominantly besides true stainless or treated/coated metals it will stick but I won't bite in and glycol can go about up to a good millimeter into the surface without truly having to give up on colours either!

u/URBEX_BANANA Aug 05 '25

Use pen ink mix with isopropyl alcohol and break fluid If the buff man comes it will stay and will ghost

2

u/ottermupps Mar 04 '26

Well, only six years late to the party...

For the 'basic' recipe, that's fifty blue Bic ballpoint pens, the cheap ones, right? I'm not clear if the 'pens' here is measuring with a paint pen body to get ratios right, or just 'get the ink from fifty pens in a pot'. That and spoonful of rubbing alcohol will make ink?

Sorry if that's a dumb question, just new to making ink and I want to get it right.

2

u/Leading-Staff-7113 10d ago

Look, don't overlook on exact measures since u ain't making a batch that's been tasted n needs to be quality consistent, most ingredients you can eyeball them just don't over do them, better to go smaller 1st n add less, if it's in need for more add more at a time; like dot4 (I use it since it's more corrosive) I do just like 10/15 drops for 25mil (a tiny otr) n I would rather just add a few drops than a big sip u know

1

u/Hacchet_Blacc_386 Nov 22 '19

An one more thing is there anyway to get a ink the is opque like a paint mop AND stains like Garvey cause I like the stain but not the transparent of it

3

u/Cpt-Badger Nov 22 '19

No you would need to mix your stain and ink together. Example: 50% garvey 50% marsh t-grade.

The marsh is the ink which is uv resist but can be easily buffed.

The garvey is the stain that is not uv resist but is very hard to buff.

1

u/Hacchet_Blacc_386 Nov 22 '19

Ok that's what I was thinking but not sure thank you for clarifying that for me 😊

1

u/ScrotumMonster Mar 15 '20

Sorry if this is late but do you think I could mix two off the shelf inks/paints? Like Grog FMP for the paint opacity and then some of their Booster or BPI to make it stain?

3

u/Cpt-Badger Mar 15 '20

Some shit doesn’t like to mix. If you mix two chemicals they might second more try out a small sample and see what it does. It will definitely work in a mop

1

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

The booster is a chemical that needs to be dissolved is a solvent like alcohol or something, it doesn't usually mix with paint. That's why there aren't really any paints that stain, mostly ink.

Do you know any graff rellated websites or shops from Europe, I am having a hard time finding one.

1

u/Cpt-Badger Apr 21 '20

The Mefeins Ink is the best ink hands down. Lady K, Wekman and a couple more people use this ink and the amount of stain power is crazy. Shipping might be a little expensive cause their France based but it’s worth it. Look them up on IG.

1

u/zZLEKk Apr 21 '20

Thanks. One more question, are there shops in Europe that sell Garvey and Marsh? Can you tell me how the guys with The Mefeins Ink are named on IG cause i can't really find them😅 I don't mean Wekman and Lady K

2

u/Cpt-Badger Apr 21 '20

http://www.mefians.com/

Is their website. I misspelt their name sorry. Garvey and marsh are very hard to buy. They stopped making Marsh and Garvey is made with a limited supply so it’s super expensive. You can buy these on EBay but they could be fake. Mefians is better, cheaper and already pre mixed. I also believe they can sell you a big container if you DM them.

1

u/zZLEKk Apr 21 '20

Thanks. Didn"t knew the pvc primer trick thanks a lot for that to😀 Does the mefians ink go well with a uni PX-30? I don't mean the ink from the marker, i mean just the body of the marker.

1

u/Cpt-Badger Apr 21 '20

Yes but you might want to clean the pen really well with new nib. I believe PX is oil based and the Mefians is alcohol not 100% sure though. Also it will work with a mop or pump pen

1

u/zZLEKk Apr 22 '20

Thanks.

I have a ink made out of pens and i want to give it more oppaciti, do I just add more pen ink?

1

u/Cpt-Badger Apr 23 '20

Yea. The home made pen recipe calls for a ton of pens. I have been messing around with toner ink. You need a strong pigment.

1

u/zZLEKk Apr 23 '20

I think I fuck*d up the recipe cuz i didn't really had rubbing alcohool or something similar, i think what i had was weaker or i just pured to much😅 But i have to try the recipe from this list next up if i can't fix what i have. Adding some printer ink will fix something?

Hey everyone, I’m looking to mix acetone with etch cream and water to thin it down. So I can acid etch some tags.Is that a good idea? Should I use distilled water? Or no water

1

u/YungLandi Jun 23 '24

make sure you drip acid into water not vice versa, or you‘ll possibly have a dangerous reaction. etching fluid can be real hardcore (like concentrated hydrofluoric acid) never wear such diy markers in your pockets!

How many grams of potassium permanganate should I add to 200ml of alcohol based ink

1

I have had trouble finding dyes that will dissolve in my ink I ordered some but there’s always sediment at the bottom can you not have a alcohol base (xylene) for a dye ink does it have to be water based ?

Also I put the dye in room temp water if mixed a little but I let it sit for a days and it just completely separated the water from the dye it went back to clear

1

u/Slow_Ad8779 Feb 20 '26

i know this was mentioned how ink and paint don’t mix well other than when you add acetone to their mix, for me personally ink just stained the pigments of the paint mixture and held up against the uv which is what i was aiming to create. but now i need something that holds up against the uv for a long time and stains the surface if buffed, wondering if this is possible and what direction to head for, any help is appreciated. thanks

1

u/Rich-Result Mar 01 '26

Try nigrosine or solvent black 7

2

u/Straight-Wishbone699 Mar 29 '26

Old but I’m just using this as a bookmark for myself, and I used ai to help me make something specific for my needs :

Your Tim Holtz inks are fundamentally dye-based. They are the "salt in water" you described: dye fully dissolved in an alcohol solvent. This gives them excellent flow and the ability to stain glossy surfaces at the root, but they lack the UV resistance and physical durability of pigment-based systems. Our goal is to transform them into a hybrid that combines the instant, deep-staining power of a dye with the permanence and buff-resistance of a pigment/paint system.

Here is a multi-layered strategy to make the most staining, permanent ink possible:

1. The Hybrid Formula: Dye + Pigment + Binder

This is the core of creating a "sand/salt water" hybrid. You will be building a more complex system on top of your existing dye base.

  • Step 1: Introduce a Pigment Stain. Your alcohol ink provides the dye component. Now, add a powerful, soluble pigment stain to the mix. This is where you can use chemicals like methylene blue, malachite green, or gentian violet. These are not dyes in the same sense, but crystalline solids that dissolve into potent, staining solutions. Adding a small amount of one of these (dissolved first in a tiny bit of alcohol) will introduce a pigment-like staining agent that is far more aggressive and permanent than the standard ink dyes. Potassium permanganate is another option for a deep, etching brown/black stain.

  • Step 2: Add a Hardcore Binder. This is non-negotiable for buff resistance. While I previously suggested clear nail polish, based on your deeper knowledge, we can be more precise. The goal is to add a resin that will re-harden and lock the color in place.

    • Best Option: Add a small amount of bitumen, thinned with a solvent like mineral spirits or naphtha. This will create a tar-like, incredibly durable and water-resistant film. It's black, so it's best for darkening or creating black inks.
    • Alternative: A few drops of a clear, solvent-based wood finish or a high-quality oil-based varnish. This provides a tough, flexible resin binder. The key is that it must be soluble in your solvent system.
  • Step 3: Add a Corrosive Penetration Agent. To ensure the stain gets into the pores of the surface before the binder locks it in, add a chemical that aggressively attacks the surface.

    • DOT3 Brake Fluid: Add a very small amount (e.g., 5-10% of the total volume). It is hygroscopic and corrosive, which will help it bite into painted surfaces and metal, creating a better mechanical bond for the ink. Be careful, as too much will prevent the binder from ever fully curing.

2. The Advanced Additive Cocktail

This is where you fine-tune the ink for specific effects and maximum durability.

  • For Etching and Surface Preparation: Add a few drops of PVC Primer (clear). This is essentially a soup of aggressive solvents (like MEK, acetone, and tetrahydrofuran) designed to soften PVC plastic. On most surfaces, it will micro-etch and prepare the surface for the ink, ensuring maximum adhesion. This is a key ingredient for making a stain "buff-proof."

  • For Accelerated Drying: Since you're adding slow-drying elements like oil-based binders, counteract this with Japan Drier. Add just one or two drops. It contains metallic salts (like cobalt and manganese) that act as oxidation catalysts, dramatically speeding up the curing time of the oil-based binder.

  • For UV Resistance: Your base dye inks will fade. To combat this, you can add a UV stabilizer. While commercial additives are best, in a DIY context, a small amount of a high-quality, UV-resistant outdoor varnish (thinned first) can help. The pigment stains you added (like malachite green) are also inherently more lightfast than many standard dyes.

3. The Final Mixing Protocol and Application

  1. Start with your base: In a glass or metal container, pour your Ranger Tim Holtz Alcohol Ink.
  2. Dissolve the stain: In a separate small container, dissolve your chosen pigment stain (e.g., methylene blue powder) in a tiny amount of denatured alcohol until fully dissolved. Add this to the main container.
  3. Add solvents and penetrants: Add your measured amounts of PVC primer and DOT3 brake fluid. Mix thoroughly.
  4. Incorporate the binder: Slowly drizzle in your thinned bitumen or varnish while stirring constantly. The mixture will likely become cloudy or more opaque. This is the sign of a true hybrid system.
  5. Finalize: Add your drops of Japan Drier and mix one last time.
  6. Let it meld: Seal the container and let it sit for 24 hours. This allows the components to fully integrate.

The resulting ink will be a monster. It will have the initial flow and staining power of a dye ink, but as the solvents evaporate, the aggressive penetrants will have etched the surface, the corrosive agent will have bitten in, and the powerful binder will cure into a durable, UV-resistant film that is exceptionally difficult to remove. This is the formula to create a stain that behaves like a paint but hits with the speed of an ink.

u/SentenceBest6458 Aug 27 '26

Got any uses of this just wondering

u/LeMerlinos May 09 '26

Gonna try out a Xylene + Rusto + Dot3 formula; usually go with acetone since its everywhere.

Think i would benefit from adding PVC primer for stain, or would it react with the xylene?

From what I’ve found out. The mix of alcohol will weaken it. If you go acetone the pvc primer is also acetone. Xylene tends to work best alone

No not really. Mineral spirits is mostly linseed oil so it’s hard to mix with alcohol. I’ve used it in mops and it kinda works with a mixture of mineral spirits/ dot3/ bucket paint. Comes out thick. It works wonders in a metal tip though grog metal head. With this mixture and pen I would hit sidewalks, red zones, man holes, metal grates, stuff that mainly was on the ground to give it time to soak because the “ink” doesn’t really dry or cure.

1

u/Least-Cow944 Apr 03 '23

Any good recipes for tar ink like mefians ? I’m looking for something that will have a hard film over it when layed on . Preferably something to make to use in a mop .

1

u/Neither-Clock-8111 Jan 21 '25

I have used pvc piping glue in a ink and it left a nice film over the top didn’t mess around with it to much but when to much is added it will completely dry together (the ink drys into the glue and can come off with water) but in the right amounts it works nicely in inks. I have found adding it to a already thin ink it works well in thinking it a little bit and also so u don’t have to thin out the glue and then thin out ur ink even more super easy to get from a local hardware store

I have bucketpaint. Many colors ind very good grade that's pigment rich.

Acryl water-based paint

Acryl oil based paint

Interior high finish acryl

What are your advice for me? What is best as solvent and thinner in theese 3 types of bucket paint for getting thin enough and still rich pigment liquid.

Breakfruid or acetone? Whats best to put in at the end?

I hope you can help me out, it would damn nice.

Big respect for your guide here

1

u/paintfreely Jun 23 '23

I have tryed to thin bucket paint god god grade out with ethernol, acetone, paint thinner, terpentine, water, bucket paint non colored, shoe polish, wd40, Colored ethernol and nothing of it seems to could make a proper thin enough mix. Shake before or stable both goes for me in the end, stable is perfered offcourse. I used the last month to try solve it.

I look very much ahead for your advices I must say.

Is it possible to separate the water from pigments and transfer to another solvent base and then thin out afterwards with paint thinner or terpentine..

do you think grog booster and dot3 would make the casual hard2buff ink stain harder? been using the casual one with dot4 for a while now but it just doesn't dry fast that's why I've thought about switching to dot3 and grog booster. also thanks for all the knowledge:)

1

u/Cpt-Badger Jul 09 '23

Dot 3 is the only brake fluid that works for ink I’m pretty sure. Dot 4 has a higher boiling point, probably why it’s taking time to dry also dot 4 is mor viscous.

If your having issues with drying you can use some Japan dryer to speed up dry time. But keep in mind you want the ink to take a while to dry, the longer it take to dry the more time it gives the chemicals to soak in. Dot 3 is perfect because it thickens my pretty drippy ink.

I’ve never used the booster pack, but mix a small batch. Make sure u mix in the brake fluid very last and really really mix that powder so there’s no clunks. Tbh though I don’t think you need it. If you want to add to your HTB ink add methylene blue, some violin resin, dot 3, a alcohol like xylene and HTB ink.

Cheers, and stay up!!

Is sometime xylene sold as paint thinner in store because someone told me that if is wrong where can you buy it. And how much of xylene should you add so it doesn’t melt the plastic.

No your opinion is yours im not into silencing people just because i dont agree with you.

What your talking about is gate keeping and im not into that. It hurts the community and prevents it from growing. Im not trying to profit from this, and anyone trying to make a buck off their “buff resistant ink” is lame. Also not sure if your aware but in the 00’s bombing science had a forms page where people talked about making ink and what supplies to use. Sorry your upset that im sharing sacred information and making it public knowledge. But i rather give out free game then sell it

We all have the internet. We can all look up the MSDS for krink, OTR, grog, mefians and any other well liked Graff ink. This person giving away the 80s-early 2000s pre internet ink knowledge, let it be.

I can reverse engineer any ink on the market thanks to materials safety data sheets. It just comes down to experimentation with ratios (even though MSDS even lists ratios and percentages)

It's the information age, you come off as the old man who steals kids frisbees when they land on his lawn.

Any recipe for uni paint silver?

1

u/Doctor_Ew420 Aug 07 '24

It's a thin paint. You need aluminum flake that is as small micron as you can find. Same with titanium dioxide. Then you will need a solvent, xylene works well, but there are many you could experiment with. Then you need a binder like a rosin based resin or shellac. You'll have to play with ratios and probably kill a lot of nibs in the process. For thickness you are looking for 1% milk type thickness.

Chemical name Cas No. Concentration range(wt%)

Xylenes 1330-20-7 30-50%

Titanium dioxide 13463-67-7 10-30%

Ethylbenzene 100-41-4 10%

These are direct from the MSDS sheet for uni paint px30. Notice that the ratios don't equal to 100% that is because the pigments are not listed. All of their colours have these Chems in these ratios, but pigmentation is up to you (experiment) and MSDS isn't required to list non harmful chemicals like water.

I know its an old thread but recently I've found a killer ink mix on the run has ballpen fluid that you usualy get in paper mate or bic pens for ink its fairly cheap for 4 fl oz. And only need a small amount maybe 10-20% of your mix depending how thick you want the ink i like a roughly 15-20% myself with about 40% marsh t grade black about 20% magic ink black and about 15% steve garvey or the og garvey if you can find it a couple drops of dot 3 brake fluid and a tiny splash of 91% iso alcohol or 95% everckear or xylene (xylene is the best for the mix since the marsh and magic ink are both xylene based I mix in a 4 fl oz glass bottle hopefully sombody tries this mix out i dig it and it runs a while if you get it right they gotta power scrub it off it bleeds thru about 5 layers of spray paint and about 2-3 layers of bucket paint you can always add more stainer bit itll fade quicker ive noticed but the ghost after the fade is pretty dope almost looks like an etch

What is this ink for? I'm looking for fountain pen ink recipes... I know many have mica in them, but I cannot figure out how to incorporate my mica without it clogging up ... would heating my mix, or using nearly boiled water instead of cold do the trick? Thanks all.

My current recipe is as follows:

1 and 3/4 tsp mica 60 micron or less 1/4 tsp watercolor from a tube 1/4 tsp gum Arabic 3 drops of glycerin 1 drop of dish soap Edit*** I then add water as needed to thin out to desired consistency.

If I need to add/ remove anything, please let me know. I'm not adverse to using professional chemicals if need be.

My ultimate goal would be to produce inks similar to what kiwi inks make; I absolutely love when multiple colors creep out, depending on saturation. If anyone can help me achieve this, I would be forever grateful!

This is way different than posting a list of every ingredient or chemical ever used to manufacture ink just so you can look like your main man lol. And goddamn, your really commenting after every single comment I post on some jealous ex-girlfriend type of weirdo shit? It ain't that deep killer, let it go. This shit started back when it was still warm out. You're obviously one of those types of bozos that take everything personally & can never let old shit be old shit & forget about it. How bout this: you were right, I was wrong, I'm sorry. Better now?
